Returning Home (Korra)
Avatar Korra sat with her head resting on her hand as she struggled to keep her eyes open. "Are we there yet?" She and Ikki, the middle child airbender, both asked at the same time once again.
Tenzin, Korra's airbending master and friend, sighed as he rubbed his temples for what must have been the thousandth time. "Yes you two, we are finally here" he sighed as Korra and the airbender quickly looked over the side of Oogi, Tenzin's bison, and saw the southern water tribe below. "Must you really join in on Ikki's nonsense Korra?"
"Hey, not my fault your son made me promise that I'd annoy you since he isn't here to do it" the avatar replied with a shrug.
"Wait he did what?" Tenzin asked right before Korra stood up and jumped off the bison before they even had the chance to land.
The fall down to the ice was enough to completely wake Korra. Right before she hit the ground she quickly pushed with her airbending and slowed what little was left of her descent.
"Korra!" The girl smiled happily as she was noticed by a familiar kid who quickly ran over to her.
"Hey Koko" Korra smiled as she pat the girls head. "Let's keep my arrival a secret alright?" the child nodded. "Good, now where's your big brother?"
—————————————————————
"That's not fair! This is supposed to be waterbending training! You can't use your other stuff!"
"I'm the avatar! And you have to deal with it!" Little Korra laughed as she flung a ball of fire at her friend as he quickly yelped and ducked out of the way. "Fight me (y/n)!"
The little boy huffed as he got back up and glared at Korra. "You want to fight?" He quickly did a few motions and around him formed octopus like water tentacles. "Let's fight then!"
Korra smiled widely as she watched a tentacle rush at her. She quickly shot her hand out and the water just crashed down to the ground, freezing to the ice.
(Y/n) huffed and crossed his arms. "You stink"
"I know" little Korra giggled happily as she grabbed the boys water with her bending and threw it back in his face.
—————————————————————
Korra smirked as she looked at the wall of the igloo. She shouldn't. It would be mean. But it would also be funny. She was gonna do it.
She quickly punched the wall, sending a perfect circle flying inside the building and causing a scream of surprise from the man inside. "I'm the avatar! And you have to deal with it!" Korra laughed as she entered through the hole.
"You stink" (y/n) huffed before breaking into a laugh.
"I know" Korra smirked as she walked up to her childhood friend and opened her arms to him. "I'll fix the wall"
The man rolled his eyes but opened his arms and quickly embraced the avatar. "It's been too long Korra"
"It's only been a couple months" Korra pressed her nose and upper lip against the boys cheek and breathed in, this act was called a Kunik and in their people was how they showed affection to those close to them.
"This is the South Pole Korra, there's nothing to do when you're not here" her friend replied as she pulled her face back away and broke the hug. "Therefore it has been to long"
"Whatever you say" Korra rolled her eyes as she quickly used her bending to fix the man's wall. "I missed you too. What's for dinner?"
He gave her a confused look. "You're not eating with your parents?"
"I could but they won't eat until later and I'm hungry now" Korra replied as she walked over to the boys table and sat on the floor before it. "So what's for dinner?"
(Y/n) just looked confused but shrugged. "I was actually counting on a dinner invitation from you. I didn't find anything when I went out hunting today"
"Oh" Korra frowned before breaking into a wide smile.
"Uh oh" (y/n) spoke as he noticed Korra's look. "I don't like that look. I know that look"
"We'll go hunting together! Just like old times" Korra spoke excitedly as she grabbed her friend's shoulder and pulled him towards the door. "Grab your coat and let's go!"
"Seriously?" (Y/n) asked with a small laugh. "You're an airbender now right? Aren't you supposed to be a pacifist?"
Korra shook her head. "Avatar is the exception" she smirked. "And it's been a long time since I've had something that's not vegetarian. I was counting on you to provide some actual food"
"Ah" (y/n) nodded, now understanding. Korra's parents would be serving vegetarian food if Tenzin and his daughter were there. "That's why you came to see me before everyone else"
"That and I missed you" Korra shrugged. "But mostly that"
—————————————————————
"Korra this is not hunting" (y/n) laughed as he watched Korra sneak up towards one of the whiskered penguins as it flapped its four wings in her direction. "We can't get distracted this close to the hunting grounds, we're almost there!"
"Oh come on" Korra huffed as she turned to look at her friend. "We have time to stop and go penguin sledding" she rolled her eyes before looking back to the penguin. "Hey come on little guy, wanna go sledding?"
Korra jumped at the penguin and it quickly jumped out of her way so she landed face first in the cold snow. (Y/n) laughed as he watched her get up and bend the snow off of her. "You know you need to be more patient with them"
"Yeah I know. But I also missed the feeling of falling into the snow" Korra smirked as she looked back towards the penguin again. "There's no snow in republic city"
(Y/n) shrugged as he slowly walked up to one of the penguins and held out a hand to it. "Sounds hot" he crouched down as slowly the penguin started moving towards him. "Any penguins?"
"Not one" Korra shook her head.
"Then it's not a place worth living" the man shrugged as he happily pet the penguin once it was close enough. "Hello little guy. Wanna go sledding?"
A couple minutes later the humans and their new friends were atop a tall hill. "Race you to the bottom?" Korra asked with a smirk.
"You're on" her friend replied as they both got on their penguins and started down the hills.
They both screamed happily, the wind in their faces as they went down at speeds no human could go down this hill without falling.
Korra smirked as she looked over at her friend. He was going a bit faster but she wasn't about to let him win. She carefully bent the snow below her penguin into ice and they sped up.
Just as they were reaching the bottom the man looked over to Korra and seemed to notice her arm movements. "Hey!" He called out, drawing her attention to him. He smirked before quickly bending the snow.
Korra screamed first in fear and then excitement as she and her penguin were sent flying into the air as the snow shot up into the sky.
Korra landed on her ass with a thud before yelling in surprise as her penguin landed atop her, calling out happily at its first and probably only ever flight. She looked up and noticed her friend smirking above her. "You cheated!" She laughed, knowing he had won their race.
"Only because you did first" he replied with a shrug as he lifted the penguin off of Korra and placed it on its feet. "Thanks little guy" the penguin nodded before walking off.
Korra rolled her eyes but once the man offered her his hand she took it and he pulled her up, bending the snow off of her with his other hand. "You stink" she repeated the boys earlier words as she stared into his eyes.
"I know" he parroted Korra's usual response before leaning down and giving her cheek a quick kunik. "Now how about we get back to hunting?"
"You got it" Korra quickly pulled him into a hug before he could pull away from the kunik. "Then we can discuss the future"
"Oh?" The boy asked with a confused tone as he started to realize how long the kunik had gone on.
"Yeah, I'm thinking we ask Tenzin about bringing you back with us. May need you in case I one day forget my water bending" she spoke as she finally let the boy pull away. "You can't say for sure that that won't happen"
"I suppose I can't" (y/n) replied with a smile. The two began walking towards the hunting grounds. "But just between us I'm sure I'd agree to go with you even if you don't need my help"
"I'm sure you would" Korra smirked over at him as they kept walking. "Race you to the hunting site!" She quickly ran off ahead of the man.
(Y/n) just shook his head with another small laugh. He walked after her, knowing it would annoy her how long she'd have to wait for him once she reached the hunting site. She deserved a bit of impatience after leaving him here alone for so long. He was glad though that he wouldn't need to go through that again.
Word count: 1606
(If you couldn't tell I decided to lean into the Inuit culture that the water tribes are inspired by, may continue that in future Korra, Yue, or Katara chapters. Any requests for future chapters?)
