Write To Rank 2021

Blue Belt: Write a mashup of action and sci-fi genres, using verbs in 1200 words.

"What time is it, Sophia?" I asked in a sleepy grunt, still not fully awake.

"Good morning sir. Today is the 3rd of November, year 3021. The time is currently 09:35 a.m., and the weather forecast predicts a light drizzle. How may I help you?" My AI asks in her usual monotone voice.

"Get me coffee Sophia, and make it extra dark. Something tells me I'll need it today," I order her after which she heads straight to the kitchen, leaving me alone, like always.

I pull out my charger port, and insert a small chip inside it. As it charges, I drink my black unsweetened coffee, briefly going back to almost a century ago, when I used to enjoy my coffee sweet and creamy. Shaking my head at the memories that can't be erased, I quickly remove the chip as it beeps once, and insert it in my wrist watch.

Wearing the watch again, the chip connects with my skin, sending a small shock all over my body. After the initial shock passes, I finally feel like my mind is coming to life again. In today's age, recharging one's mind electronically might be a hassle for some people, but the fact that it never erases any memories, and keeps you young forever was tempting enough for people to take the leap. I however, was not so thrilled about it, rather, it was done out of duty which I was having trouble fulfilling in.

I got out after a quick shower, and found that my clothes for the day were laid on the bed - a white button down shirt, with black pants and a matching blazer. Only this business attire was something that hadn't changed even after a century. While getting ready, I gave a signal for my audio receptive AI to start playing all my messages, which weren't any different from what I receive on a daily basis, but one of them caught my immediate attention.

"Zach, there's a problem. Clone no 3 is nowhere to be found. We've searched everywhere for him, but after I searched the garage, I found one of your bikes missing – the blue one. Do you know where he can run off to? Even if you don't, just come here and solve this man, my head feels like its about to break. So, just wake up and get here now."

"Sara, check the current location of ZM-0455 in the city. Locate it, wherever it is, and tell me now," I gave another order as I hastened my actions now.

Quickly throwing the coat over my shoulder, I exited my bedroom and headed straight to the garage, skipping my breakfast of delicious pancakes. As I neared my car, it opened with my sensor controlled remote, and closed on it's own once I sat down in it. I quickly switched on my tablet, Sara's voice automatically coming back to life here. She told me the location which was exactly twenty kilometers from this place, and I thought I was doomed. Still, not one to lose so easily, and curious to know why the clone ran off, I pushed the start button and the electronic engine came to life.

The wheel-less car sprang forward on its own in full speed while I busied my hands with loading my revolver with wooden darts that could act like lumps of cholesterol in the human body. It wouldn't totally kill the clone, but slow their flow down considerably, which would be in my favor.

Driving past the floating buildings, and other zooming automobiles, I reached the seaside and quickly realized the destination of my clone. Gritting my teeth in anger, I sped up even more, having to cross only a single bridge to get to where No. 3 was. Minutes later, I saw the familiar electric blue color of my favorite bike, being a stark contrast in the world of blacks and whites. Revving my engine up a bit more, I shouted out to the man in the helmet,

"Stop right there, No. 3!"

The clone turned around immediately to detect the source of the voice and once he confirmed it was indeed me, he sped up again. In the meantime, I had connected his system up on my tab, and talked to him through special hearing nodes I had installed in him.

"Don't run away from me, you know you're venturing on a path with no return."

"You have no idea what I'm doing. You're an arrogant piece of shit who has lived on for a century, and wants to live more, so that he can enjoy the slavery of his clones and take the utmost advantage of our brains. Why would I want to serve a man like you? So, get lost before I explode and do something you will regret," he replied icily.

"That man.... do you really believe you will live after colluding with him? Did he perhaps, give you the impossible promise of turning you into a real human?" I asked him sardonically, and could sense his gears working judging by the silence on the other side.

All I could hear in that moment was the sounds of the harsh seaside wind, and the splashes of water being thrown back and forth at a distance from us. After a while, he spoke again, although his speed hadn't decreased at all.

"I no longer want to live taking orders from anyone. I wish to do my own thing, and I refuse to become your puppet and do whatever you tell me to do."

"And you think going to my enemy and helping him in killing me will give you your freedom? You fool, do you realize that I hold your lifeline? That you are my clone, someone who was born out of my genes and DNA, and that you die the moment I die? Instead of acting like a human with hormones and emotions, it will be best if you apologized to me and came back quietly. Then, I will also consider whatever it is that you want to do. And you know at least one thing about me, I never make false promises."

Silence again. It was silent on the other hand as my stupid clone weighed his options whether or not he wanted to destroy me. He gave me a perfect chance to get closer to him, and as his bike came in arm's length for me, I quickly retrieved my revolver full of wooden darts, and released one precisely into his neck. Luckily, we were at the end of the highway, and the narrow side road gave way to an abandoned tunnel, where his bike skidded due to lack of control and came to a halt after banging ruthlessly against a huge rock.

"Almost ruined my whole century of preparation," I thought as I struggled to pull the mass of machines on his feet.

The electricity flow to his brain had been cut momentarily, and before it  came back, I needed to return him to his quarters and increase his security.

A century ago, people thought this life would be bliss, but it's just as much torture.

So this was my first attempt at scifi genre. I don't know how much action is here, but this time, instead of writing the very stereotypical fight scene, I wanted to show something else, so I wrote a car chase scene instead!

Also, about the technology part of this, I have taken inspiration from Kdramas and my biology textbooks. Once my teacher had told me that there was a possibility to scientifically increase your life if you could transfer the contents of your brain in a chip, and insert that chip in a new body after the old body dies. So you will only change your bodies and appearances, not your mind.

Another technology was about creating clones from your genes, and I've used this too. I hope it's not too messy or impossible!! Enjoy!!
