Everyone was gathered in San's and Seonghwa's room while Dr. Seo quietly took the soon-to-be mother's blood pressure, Eden looking at his son with a gentle smile.
"The pains have stopped," Dr. Seo said as he removed the strap that was wrapped around San's arm and stood straight again, "nothing will happen yet."
Yeosang, San's older brother, and Wooyoung, San's younger brother, gave quiet nods to the trusted doctor, albeit, a bit upset the new baby wasn't going to be arriving anytime soon.
Tired and sweaty, San looked to his mother who gave him a kind and reassuring smile. "Come now, everyone." Eden spoke softly, gesturing for everyone to leave the room and give the laboring mother some space.
Seonghwa, the worried husband and soon-to-be father, stopped Dr. Seo a few feet from the stairs. "There really is nothing wrong?" He asked, wanting to be absolutely sure that his husband was okay.
"Nothing at all." Dr. Seo reassured. "He's a healthy young man going through a perfectly normal and natural process."
It was calm throughout the night, everyone going to their respected rooms and getting a few hours of sleep.
Early the next morning Jongkook was pacing around the room he and Eden shared, Eden watching and listening to his husband speak.
"We can't risk his welfare to sooth Dr. Seo's feelings "
"I know," Eden spoke with a small shake of his head.
"I like the ol' boy, but he did misdiagnose Hongjoong - he did miss the warning signs with Yunho."
Eden sat up a bit more. "Is that fair?" He questioned and adjusted the lap table filled with that morning's breakfast that was placed over his legs.
That morning consisted of a long discussion about whether or not it was a good idea to have Dr. Seo be San's main doctor for his labor.
The day went on like normal, Dr. Seo and Dr. Lee - a "prestigious doctor" Jongkook had requested help take care of San alongside Dr. Seo - popping in to check on San's progress occasionally.
Now they - aside from the soon-to-be-parents - were all gathered in the drawing room.
"What do you mean "concerned"?" Jongkook asked Dr. Seo. Everyone glanced at the long-time doctor, listening intently to his statement.
"San's ankles are swollen, and he seems...muddled."
Dr. Lee, who stood next to Dr. Seo, held back an eyeroll.
"What sort of "muddled"?" Eden inquired.
"Not quite there," Dr. Seo explained, "not quite...in the present moment."
Wooyoung spoke up now, gently setting the glass of wine he held down. "Then what do you think it means?" He didn't like the look in Dr. Seo's eyes while voicing his concerns.
Dr. Lee was the one to answer Wooyoung.
"It means he's having a baby."
Jongkook scoffed softly, almost a chuckle.
A few more hours went by and things slowly began to progress. Seonghwa knelt beside San's bedside, holding his hand, and watching helplessly as his husband breathed and groaned through a contraction.
"God, I wish there was something I could do..." Seonghwa said, pressing a soft kiss to the back of San's hand.
San panted, his head low and eyes closed. "Just be here." San looked up with a genuine but pain-filled smile as he took his hand from Seonghwa's grasp and grabbed his forearm. "We can just lie back and look at the stars." He panted, eyes closing once more as he leaned his head back.
Worried, Seonghwa turned back and looked at Dr. Lee. "Is he-"
"It's all just as it should be." Dr. Lee smiled and dried his hands with a white towel.
More hours had passed and everyone was gathered in the drawing room once more after San was checked over by both doctors.
"It's my belief that San is at risk of eclampsia." Dr. Seo spoke.
Jongkook, confused, looked towards Dr. Lee for explanation. "What is that?"
"A rare condition from which he is not suffering!" Dr. Lee said confidently.
"Tell him why you think he may be." Eden urged Dr. Seo.
Dr. Seo sighed before looking from Eden to Jongkook. "His baby is small, he's confused, and there's far too much albumin, that is, protein in his urine." He explained, taking a few steps forward.
"Dr. Seo, please." Jongkook scolded. "Have you forgotten Jongho is present?"
"Please, father." Jongho crossed his arms. "I think I'm old enough to hear these things."
About an hour or two later everyone was standing in the hall; Dr. Lee talking after he and Dr. Seo checked on San one more time. Dr. Seo growing concerned for San in his fragile state.
"San is in distress," he explained in a slightly harsh tone, "he's about to give birth!"
By now Dr. Seo was losing his cool. It seemed the only people who believed him about San's possible life-threatening condition was Eden and Seonghwa.
"Jongkook, Seonghwa, time is running out. We should be at the clinic by now!"
Seonghwa looked to the floor, dazed and slightly lightheaded. He was being pulled from side to side by family and the doctors' concern and lack of concern respectively.
"If we acted at once the baby would be born!" Dr. Seo continued.
"But if he has the operation now can you swear you can save him?" Seonghwa questioned. Dr. Seo stuttered a bit. "Well I..cannot swear it, no.."
Wooyoung and the others exhaled while Dr. Lee looked at Dr. Seo with what could only be described as disdain.
"But if we do not operate, and if I am right about his condition, then he will die!"
"If, if, if, if, if! Mr. Kim," Dr. Lee turned to Jongkook, "can you please take command!"
"Seonghwa," Jongkook stepped towards his son in-law, "Dr. Seo is not sure he can save him. Dr. Lee is certain he can bring him through it with a living child. Isn't a certainty," Jongkook gestured to Dr. Lee, "stronger than a doubt?!"
"Jongkook," Eden stepped in, "I don't mean to insult Dr. Lee, but Dr. Seo knows San! He's known him since he was born!"
Seonghwa looked to his mother in‐law. "So you'd take him to the hospital?"
"I would've taken him an hour ago!" Tensions were high, but raised even more when San's cries of pain and distress echoed through the hall.
"God, help us." Seonghwa mumbled, pushing past the others to get to his and San's room.
Seonghwa and the others were soon told to wait in the drawing room as San's labor really began to pick up.
Yeosang sat in San's bed next to the younger and dabbed at his brother's sweaty forehead with a cloth. Eden sat back in a chair next to the bed and held his son's hand.
San was slightly propped up by several large and fluffy pillows; a thin, cotton sheet lay over San's legs that were bent at the knees and splayed open, Dr. Seo's hand between San's legs to check his internal progress.
"One more push, San, and they should start to crown." Dr. Seo explained.
Dr. Lee watched from the sidelines at Eden's order, ready to help when needed.
"You're doing great!" Wooyoung cheered for his brother as he watch the older grip their mother's hand and the sheets beneath him tightly when he began to push; groaning loudly.
He fell back against the pillows when he stopped to catch his breath. Yeosang used that time to move some of San's sweaty hair out of his face and dab away at the moisture on his skin.
The birthing process took hours of on and off pushing, waiting, and crying when everyone in the room heard the cries of a newborn. The sound was shrill and loud.
Eden smiled proudly and gently shook San's hand before placing several kisses to the back of it and his fingers.
Dr. Seo held the newborn securely and showed San his squirming child.
"Hi baby," San smiled tiredly, looking at the scrunched up face of his firstborn still covered in blood and other fluids that would soon be cleaned away by Dr. Lee, "Hi sweetheart."
When the rest of the delivery process was taken care of and both baby and mother were clean and comfortable, Wooyoung quietly left to go get the new father.
Seonghwa's focus was broken when Wooyoung walked into the room with a wide smile.
"You can come up. It's a girl."
Seonghwa could hardly believe that he was now a father, and San a mother. "A-and they're both..."
"They're fine." Wooyoun reassures, "Tired, but both are perfectly fine."
Hearing that everything was okay and that his husband and daughter were fine, he allowed himself to breathe. A rare, wide smile forming on his face.
The others smiled as well.
Mingi spoke what everyone was thinking. "Oh thank God. And hallelujah!" Hongjoong gave Seonghwa a congratulatory pat on the back as he passed. He wanted to meet his daughter.
Once he was out of the drawing room, Wooyoung followed.
As soon as Seonghwa entered the room, he was met with a smiling Eden and Yeosang, Wooyoung entering shortly after Seonghwa.
The new parents looked at their new daughter, Seonghwa smiling proudly. "She's so beautiful..." he whispered. San looked up and met Seonghwa's gaze. "San..I do love you so much.." he said softly and with a smile, leaning over and pressing a kiss to San's slightly damp forehead.
The two soon went back to looking at their daughter. "I just want to sleep really..." San's voice was hoarse and tired as he looked to Eden, cradling his child a bit closer
"Of course you do," Eden smiled, "you've earned it."
With the big event now over, everyone got settled into bed for a much needed nights sleep.
During the night however, Wooyoung awoke, alert and racing for his parents' room.
"Mother!" Wooyoung shook Eden awake, Jongkook awakening from the noise and movement next to him. "Mother, wake up! It's San!"
Hearing the urgency in his son's voice, Eden hopped out of bed as quickly as he could and followed Wooyoung, Jongkook doing the same.
Yeosang stepped aside when Wooyoung, Eden, and Jongkook entered the room.
"What's happening?" Jongkook asked, seeing San gasp for breath and give small exclamations of pain. Seonghwa knelt beside the bed, terrified.
"Oh God! Oh God!" He cried out. Eden knelt next to his son in-law, looking helplessly at his son. Wooyoung stood closer to his brother's head, a few fingers behind San's neck as he pressed a cool towel on his brother's forehead just to do something to try and ease the older.
As San continued to gasp for air, Seonghwa and Eden now leaned slightly over him, Seonghwa taking hold of San's hands. "God, no, no!!"
"What the hell is happening?!" Jongkook demanded yet again.
Dr. Lee looked to the doctor he brought.
"San?" Wooyoung tried calling out, now shaking his older brother. "San can you hear me?! San..Sannie, it's Wooyoung! He cant hear me..."
Eden looked to Dr. Lee as he began speaking, now watching San's strained form. "It looks as if..."
"It looks as if what?!" Eden snapped, temporarily stepping away from the bed.
"This is eclampsia." Dr. Seo confirmed. Yeosang and Jongho watched in horror as their brother's face slowly became blue. Wooyoung and Seonghwa began panicking; Seonghwa being the loudest in vocalizing his fear.
"Please, no, please...please breathe, love! Please..."
Eden began sobbing next to Seonghwa as he watch his second son still writhe and tense up in pain and struggling to get air. "No...please...!"
Wooyoung looked to the others before looking back at San, begging for someone to help his brother. "He can't breathe!"
Wooyoung, after a few moments, took a few steps back, watching defeatedly, but with just as much horror in his eyes as Yeosang, Jongho, father, and respective significant others', as San stopped breathing.
Hongjoong clung to the bed post and closed his eyes, his head lowering slightly.
Seeonghwa and Eden continued to sob out several 'no's' and 'please's'. Seonghwa shaking San's shoulder in hopes to wake up his husband.
"Please, love..." Seonghwa pleaded.
Dr. Seo stepped closer to the bed, leaning between Seonghwa and Eden to press two fingers to the pulse point on San's neck.
"Please wake up..." Seonghwa shook San again. "Please don't leave me..!"
Seonghwa gripped San's hand pleading against and kissing his still warm hand. Both he and Eden sobbed louder when Dr. Seo pulled back after only a few seconds.
It didn't take long for the rest of the estate to hear the sad news.
"Is there anything we should do..?" Jeongyeon, one of the Kim Estates housemaids asked softly.
Minhyuk, the Estates butler, gave her an acknowledging nod. "Carry on, Jeongyeon.."
Mina stood next to Wonpil, not able to hold back her tears. She was probably the closest - save for Seonghwa - out of the Estate to San and his family. She often talked happily with San while helping him get ready for the day, dinners, and special parties, and she also was the first to witness San's growing bump.
"As we all must..."
Wooyoung watched as Seonghwa sat on the bed and looked at San's still body. The quiet interrupted by Yeosang walking in.
"The men from the funeral service are here..."
Seonghwa's gaze never left his husband. "To take him away...?"
Yeosang didn't want to answer such a heavy question, so Jongho, who stood by San's vanity did.
"Yes..."
Hearing his brother in-laws calm voice, Seonghwa looked to him. He knew the youngest wanted to cry and scream - plead for San back, but he stayed calm and strong.
"And we must let them..."
