"Look at him!" Your best friend, Vicki, whispered. "How do I talk to him?"
You watched him walk, then looked over at her. "Just walk up to him and start a conversation. It's not like he's scary."
You started walking to class, and she followed closely behind you. "Y/N, he is intimidating. Why don't you talk to him for me?"
Your mood was starting to drop. "Vicki, why don't you talk to him? You're the one that has a crush on him." You smiled. "Just tell him how you feel."
"No way." She shook her head.
You bit the inside of your lip. You could do it for her, even if it hurt just a little bit. "I'll talk to him for you after school."
She smiled and wrapped her arms around your neck. "You're the best, Y/N!"
A bit upset, you walked solemnly to your locker after school. For Vicki, you were doing everything in your power to not let your feelings for Hongjoong develop any further than they already had. The first day that Vicki saw Hongjoong, she was infatuated with him, but you couldn't blame her. He was extremely charming.
You sighed and shut your locker as you heard Hongjoong saying goodbye to someone. You made eye contact with him and smiled, then started walking with him.
"Hey, Y/N." He nudged your shoulder playfully. "How are you?"
"I'm great, how are you?"
"I'm doing really well."
You nodded as you took notice of the rhinestone in the center of the slit in his eyebrow. You tried not to smile and looked forward.
"So, I have something to talk to you about." You told him.
"Oh," he exclaimed and stopped walking to turn to you. "I've actually been wanting to say something to you for a while."
You shifted. "You go first, then."
He smiled and looked around nervously before smiling cutely at you. "I really really like you. I have for a while, I just haven't found the courage to say anything until now."
You smiled as your heart rate picked up, but then you remembered what you actually needed to talk to him about. You subtly grabbed his hand and looked at your feet.
"It took a lot of courage to say that," you paused. "But I cant reciprocate your feelings."
You looked up and almost crumbled at his hurt expression. "Why?"
"I wanted to talk to you about Vicki. She likes you so much and I can't do that to her."
"Is that the only reason?" He questioned.
You nodded, lying. Of course that wasn't the only reason, you liked Hongjoong, too. "Give Vicki a chance. She's so sweet and she really does like you."
Hongjoong searched your eyes before looking away and nodding. "I'll try, but it's hard to be in a relationship with someone you don't have feelings for."
His hand slipped from yours and he walked away. Your head dropped once again and you also left. As you walked home, tears were threatening to fall from your eyes, but you kept them in. Your crush telling you that he liked you, then telling him that you couldn't like him back because your best friend liked him? Devastating.
However, you wanted to do everything you could for Vicki. If making her happy meant that you had to put your feelings to the side, then you could do that.
When you got home, you went to your room and slung yourself onto your bed. Not even two minutes later, Vicki called you.
"Hey, girl." You answered.
"What did he say?!"
Your stomach fell. "I think he'll probably ask you out on a date soon."
"Really?" She questioned excitedly. "Thank you so much, Y/N! I really owe you."
"No, you don't." You chuckled. "If he texts you, tell me, okay?"
"I will!"
She hung up and you just looked out your window. "It's fine, Y/N. Vicki's happy, and Hongjoong will probably end up liking her."
Later that night, Vicki texted you.
Vicki:
- He texted me and asked if I was free tomorrow! I told him that I was and he wants to take me out!
You:
- That's so great! You'll have to tell me everything that goes down.
Vicki:
- You know I tell you everything.
You smiled sadly at the screen and put your phone on the nightstand. You'd end up getting over it, right?
At school the next day, you avoided Vicki and Hongjoong as best as you could. You could support them from a distance. After school, however, you went to your safe space, which was the roller skating rink. You had loved doing it ever since you were a kid and it was something you did to de-stress.
You got there and put your skates on, getting on the rink and letting your worries roll under the wheels of your white roller blades. You were really focusing on the way the ground felt underneath your feet and not much else around you, until you heard a familiar laugh. You looked up and saw Hongjoong and Vicki.
You sighed and went to the other side of the rink to get out. You quickly took your skates off and put your shoes back on. As you headed for the door, Vicki spotted your and called your name.
You froze and looked over, smiling at the two of them. "Hey."
"Are you leaving?" Vicki asked.
"Yeah, I've been here for a while." You lied. "I figured my mom would want me home."
She pouted. "Why don't you stay a bit longer and join us?"
You glanced at Hongjoong and shook your head. "No."
You walked away, but Vicki and Hongjoong followed after you. She grabbed your wrist and turned you around.
"If something's going on you can tell me." She said sweetly. "We're best friends."
You looked at Hongjoong once more, seeing how he was tilting his head and waiting for you to say something. It seemed like he was waiting for you to say something about him. Vicki looked at him as well, then back at you.
"Is there something going on between you and Hongjoong?"
You shook your head. "No-"
"Yes."
You both looked at Hongjoong and your eyes went wide. You shook your head, not wanting him to say anything too blunt. It would break Vicki's precious heart. Hongjoong looked down at Vicki and smiled sadly.
"You're super great, but I really like Y/N."
You shut your eyes and shook your head. When you opened your eyes, you wish you hadn't. Vicki looked devastated.
"I'm really sorry," Hongjoong whispered. "But I cant be in a relationship with someone that I don't see in a romantic way."
Vicki looked at you. "Do you like him?" You nodded, almost unnoticeably. "You could've said something. I would've understood."
"I didn't want to make you upset."
She shrugged. "I'm upset now, and embarrassed. You could've told me that he didn't like me and I wouldn't be standing here. You've known him for a lot longer, you're friends with him, it makes sense as to why he likes you, Y/N."
"You're right," you sighed. "I should've said something."
She nodded and pulled you into a hug. "I get it, Y/N. Thank you for putting me first, but it just doesn't work out sometimes. I want you to be happy, okay?"
"Okay." You whispered. "Thank you."
She pulled back and poked your nose playfully. "Thank you."
She waved to both you and Hongjoong as she walked off. You shook your head and walked off as well, Hongjoong catching up with you moments later.
"You don't feel bad for being so blunt with her?"
"Yeah, I do." He replied. "But sugar coating it wouldn't have made it less painful."
You shook your head and tried not to look over at him. You walked in a tense silence all the way to your house. You attempted to speed up, but Hongjoong caught your wrist and gently pulled you back to face him.
"Have you ever heard of the saying 'the heart wants what it wants'?" He questioned, so you nodded. "My heart wants you, Y/N. I can't just change that, okay? Don't be upset with me for that, please."
"I'm not upset with you." You sighed. "I know it will hurt Vicki to see us together."
"She said she wants you to happy."
You looked up at him and nodded. You wrapped your arms around his waist and rested your head on his chest.
"Give it some more time, okay?" You whispered. "I want to be with you, but for Vicki's sake, let's wait until she's moved on completely."
He played with your hair. "I can wait for you, Y/N."
