You held your head high as you walked around the brand new school you were attending. You could tell people we're talking about you, you just couldn't hear them, and it made you slightly anxious. You took a deep breath and continued on with your guide, and he showed you to everything you needed to know about.
He suddenly looked around and signed to you, telling you that the bell rang, so you went off to your first period. You took off the 'deaf' sign that they put on your arm and tossed it in the trash. Of course, people stared at you as they came in, but some smiled and waved politely.
One guy, Jian- which you knew all too well, walked in and spotted you, so he sat next to you. You turned and looked at him, watching his mouth move but not responding. You turned back to face the front, and you saw him try to push your arm to get your attention, but someone grabbed his wrist.
"Jian, she's deaf." Yunho, one of your other classmates told him. "Go sit somewhere else."
"Why? So you can sit with her?" Jian questioned.
"Yes," he replied. "I'm sure she'll appreciate it."
Yunho sat next to you and smiled at you. He introduced himself to you by signing, and you were happy to know that there was someone you could communicate with in the school. You introduced yourself to him, and communicated with him throughout the class period. He seemed very sweet, but you found yourself wishing you could hear his voice.
When you got home, you went straight to your bedroom and changed clothes; all black attire, black mask, and you put your sniper rifle in you discreet carrier. You waited until it got dark and started moving.
You were simply an undercover assassin, working for the government. They sent you out to assassinate a serial rapist- Liu Jian. He had been accused of the crime several times, but his father had the money to get every single charge expunged.
Since Jian was popular, handsome, the typical boy that everyone loved, nobody suspected him of such things, but you knew. You didn't only know because of the evidence, but by the way some of the girls kept their distance and gave him dirty looks. Those women were broken, scared to come out about their unfortunate attacks, and you were tired of watching him get away with it.
You had been tracking his movements for months, getting to know his routine, so you climbed up to the roof of the building that was across from a cafe, which he visited regularly every Thursday.
You set up your rifle and lined up the shot, waiting for the perfect moment. Being an assassin was hard, especially in deep cover missions- you couldn't hear anyone coming up on you, and you weren't aware of what anyone was saying, but it was a risk you were willing to take for your country, for justice.
Two hours had passed by, and Jian was finally leaving. You put your finger on the trigger, but before you could pull it, someone got in front of him and began speaking. Next thing you knew, he was getting in a car and getting his lucky break. You sighed angrily and put your rifle back, knowing that you wouldn't be able to track the car down.
The next day, you had bags under your eyes from the lack of sleep you got, and serious irritation because of Jian. You were running late, so you were the only one in the hallway, or you thought. Jian came around the corner and pinned you to the lockers.
"So pretty," He said, knowing you couldn't hear him. "I could just eat you up."
Of course, you were extremely good at lip reading, it was part of your training. You grinned and brought your knee into his crotch, the impact making him double over in pain. You elbowed him in the side and put him to the ground, your forearm to his throat.
"Don't touch me." You mouthed, giving him hand gestures that a three year old could understand.
You forced him to his feet and continued walking to class, pushing him into the classroom first. "What's going on?" Your teacher signed.
"Jian tried to put his hands on me," you signed back. "So I took care of the situation."
Yunho watched in curiosity, since he didn't mark you as the type to get physical. He noticed the grip that you had on Jian's arm and wondered where you got your strength and physicality from.
You let go of Jian and sat down next to Yunho. "Everything okay?" He signed.
You nodded and gave him a small smile, then you looked back over at Jian. He definitely had that uneasy vibe to him, and Yunho noticed how uncomfortable you were around him. He watched how you'd look over at Jian every now and then, and before you could leave the classroom to your next period, he grabbed your arm and pulled you to the side.
"Have you and Jian met before?" He questioned.
You shook your head. "Why do you ask?"
"You just seem to have a problem with him, but it's only your second day." He signed. "I was just curious."
You started walking, and he walked alongside you. "I just have a bad feeling about him."
Three weeks later, you were still in deep cover, and you had attempted to assassinate Jian three more times. It seemed that he always got away before you could pull the trigger.
Yunho had become more and more suspicious of your strength, of your fast reflexes, of your body language, yet he took a serious interest in you- liked that you were so mysterious and fearless. Jian had tried to get at you twice after the first attempt, but you put him in his place both times.
You pulled your hoodie on over the gun you had holstered to your torso, which you used for protection and safety only, the large clothing hiding it perfectly. You went to school and felt normal, until you walked into the classroom to find your teacher and classmates huddled in the corner, Jian holding a gun to them.
You pulled yours out and cocked it, getting his attention. He was speaking, so you read his lips, but he was only telling you to put the weapon down. You felt vulnerable- you couldn't demand him to put his gun down, so you took desperate measures and signed to Yunho, that way he could translate what you were saying.
"She says put the gun down, Jian." He whispered. "She's ready to use hers if she needs to."
"Why does she even have one?" Jian questioned. "Ask her, Yunho!"
Yunho signed to you again, and you were a bit caught off guard. You told him that you worked for the government, and Yunho furrowed his eyebrows.
"Well? What'd she say?" Jian asked.
Yunho looked at Jian. "She says she always carries it, just in case."
He lied to keep you safe. He knew that your situation was serious, and he wanted to take that into consideration.
Jian turned back to you and tilted his head. "She knows too much."
Then he pulled the trigger. Just a second later you pulled yours, and both of you went down, except yours hit him in the chest, killing him almost instantly. You holstered your gun and ushered everyone out of the room before shutting yourself in the room with Jian. You checked his pulse to be sure, and you started getting dizzy from the blood loss.
The last thing you saw before you blacked out was Yunho picking you up.
You couldn't hear the beeping of the monitors, but you could tell you were in a hospital by the bright lights. You rubbed your eyes to make the blurriness less severe. You looked around the room and saw Yunho sitting by your bed, reading something.
You reached out and grazed his arm with your fingertips, making him look at you. He grabbed your hand and rubbed the back of it with his thumb.
"You lost a lot of blood." He signed. "But you're stable."
"Did you lie to Jian?"
Yunho nodded. "I told him that you carried it just in case. I didn't think you wanted everyone knowing that you worked for the government- as what exactly?"
"An assassin." You signed. "Jian was a serial rapist and it was my job to assassinate him. I came here in deep cover to get close to him, tried to kill him four times, but today was the only moment I've had a clear shot."
"Yeah, well he had a clear shot at you, too."
"Just my shoulder." You shrugged as you signed this, but winced at the slight pain it brought. "Why are you here anyway?"
"I didn't want you to wake up all alone in the hospital. Plus, I really like being around you."
You smiled and looked up at the ceiling before looking back at him. "Me too."
He brought your hand to his lips and kissed it gently, then leaned in slightly and paused, as if asking permission to kiss you. So, you leaned in and kissed him, but you couldn't help but smile into it.
"Thank you for not blowing my cover, and thank you for being so kind to me." You signed. "Luckily, I've been reassigned to this area, so I won't be leaving until I get reassigned again for some reason."
His eyes lit up. "You'll be here for a while?"
"I live here now."
He grabbed your hand again and smiled shyly. "Good. I don't think I could go very long without seeing your face."
