Mi-rae walked through the big doors of the academy, taking in the interior, which was even nicer than the exterior. The perfectly marbled, shiny floors, the chandeliers and light fixtures, the decorations, the furniture- everything took Mi-rae's breath away.
"Would you like me to show you where your dorm room is?" Yumiko asked sweetly. "Or would you like to see everything else first?"
Mi-rae forced herself from her thoughts, smiling at her guide. "We might as well see everything else while we're down here."
Yumiko nodded. "Very well."
Yumiko walked her through the luxurious halls, to the spacious and organized cafeteria, all the way to the gardens and the areas designated for luxury time.
As they walked back inside and headed for the beautiful staircase, Mi-rae caught sight of a boy and a girl. The boy was handsome, and seemed to be completely focused on the girl, who was walking with her head high and had her hands behind her back. She was beautifully intimidating, and they both peaked Mi-rae's interests.
"Who are they?" She asked Yumiko.
Yumiko smiled. "That's Yena and her boyfriend, Yunho."
Mi-rae nodded as you looked down from the stairs and made eye contact with her. You closed your eyes and looked forward again, walking like royalty down the remaining stairs.
"You don't know about them?" Yumiko sounded.
"No," Mi-rae replied. "Who are they?"
She watched as Yunho slipped his arm around your waist and pushed his hand into the front pocket of your dress pants. Neither one of you barely spared her a glance.
"All I can say is that," Yumiko paused as she watched the two of you walk off. "Don't get on Yena's bad side, okay?"
"Why? What will she do?"
"It's always a surprise. No one ever knows what she'll do." Yumiko smiled. "How about I show you to your dorm?"
Mi-rae nodded slowly, so Yumiko showed her to her new bedroom. She quickly thanked her guide and Mi-rae looked around. When her father told her that it was a prestigious school, she didn't know that he meant an all around prestigious school.
Yumiko joined you and Yunho downstairs. "What do you guys think of the new girl?"
"I'm sure she'll do fine." Yunho said, looking at you for your response.
You shrugged. "As long as she doesn't cause trouble, I don't care."
Yunho kissed your temple. "You're gonna scare her away, baby."
You laughed. "She'll do just fine."
"She asked about you guys." Yumiko informed. "I may have scared her just a bit."
You tilted your head. "Yumiko, what did you tell her?"
Your best friend giggled mischievously. "To stay off of your bad side."
Yunho snorted. "She needed that information."
You rolled your eyes and hopped off of the counter you were sitting on. "Maybe she'll take your advice, unlike some of the previous newcomers."
Mi-rae made her way down to the cafeteria for dinner. She found her spot at one of the tables, being welcomed by a few of the other students. She found herself looking for you and Yunho. However, she also noticed how there weren't as many students as she expected. As chefs and servers started bringing platters out to the tables, she finally spotted the two of you, along with Yumiko and the director of Holo Academy, Ga Ho-Suk.
"Good evening, students." Ho-Suk spoke. "Surely you all know of our new student, and our way of welcoming our newcomers. At that, I present our first, second, and third seats in the council- Kim Yena, Jeong Yunho, and Yumiko Ikishima."
Mi-rae's jaw slacked slightly, curious about what the council was. She watched you carefully as you walked up to the podium, intrigued and nearly consumed by you already.
"Tonight, we will be welcoming Shin Mi-rae to Holo Academy." You announced, looking right into her curious eyes. "As council president, I welcome you with open arms, Mi-rae."
She saw something dangerous flash in your eyes, but nodded graciously at your welcome anyways. You, Yumiko and Yunho walked off, eating in the gardens, as you always did. After dinner, everyone made their way up to their rooms. You and Yunho were walking up as Mi-rae was walking down. It was like everything slowed down for her as you walked by- she was so captivated that it made her angry. She had already decided that she didn't like you.
You shut the door to yours and your boyfriends shared dorm room. He laid down as you subtly changed into one of his sweatshirts, then you joined and laid your head on his chest.
"Yunho?" You whispered.
"Yeah?"
"Could you play with my hair?" You asked. "My head hurts."
He smiled and didn't hesitate to tangle his fingers into your hair to soothe your headache. He loved that you only showed this side of yourself to him. Everyone, all ninety three students at Holo Academy, was extremely intimidated by you, worried that they'd accidentally step on your toes and make you angry. To everyone else, you were unpredictable and dangerous, but he knew you like he knew the back of his hand.
He knew when you were angry by the way you would laugh and close your eyes, he knew when you were in pain by the way your eyebrows would furrow in discomfort, he knew you were happy by the way you would hug his waist for no reason. You weren't unpredictable or dangerous, you were just watching out for others, whether people believed it or not.
Yunho ran his fingers through your hair once more before laying you down and fully covering you up. He placed a gentle kiss to your forehead and wrapped his arms around you, protecting you in his own way.
The next morning, Yumiko walked into the library to find Mi-rae. She walked up behind her and peeked over her shoulder at her laptop. Yumiko saw your information, this infuriated her. She reached forward and shut Mi-rae's laptop, making her jump.
"What do you think you're doing?" Yumiko whispered. "Are you crazy? Do you know what Yena would do if she found you digging around in her business?"
Mi-rae shrugged. "I'm just really curious about her. What could she really do?"
Yumiko leaned down and got face to face with her. "Let me make one thing clear, Mi-rae. The director and the council make the decisions of how and why we expel students. I've warned you once to stay on her good side, and I strongly suggest that you take that advice and run with it."
"Yeah, well," Mi-rae stood up and grabbed her laptop. "I don't like being told what to do, but good try."
Yumiko fumed as she watched the newcomer leave the library. Just what was she trying to do with your information?
Meanwhile, Yunho was gently waking you up from your nightmare. You opened your eyes and looked around, feeling better now that you knew the scene wasn't happening all over again. You sat up and rested your forehead against Yunho's shoulder.
Only Yunho and Yumiko knew about what truly happened, and they were your only childhood friends that stayed with you after that. You continued growing up together, and the three of you became what some people would call a power trio. The Y trio.
You got off the bed and stretched. "Let's get ready."
Yunho nodded and both of you got ready, putting on your nice clothes and leaving your bedroom with your heads high, as always. While you were walking down the stairs, Mi-rae began walking next to you.
You looked over at her. "Good morning."
"Good morning, Yena." She smiled. "I was curious as to how you became president of the council. How does one do that?"
You grinned and looked forward again. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
"Maybe I want to be president."
Yunho stifled a laugh. "That was cute, newbie."
Mi-Rae stopped in her tracks at the bluntness, and the two of you left her in the dust. As you walked around the stairs, you looked up at her from the ground and smiled. Even if Mi-Rae didn't hate you already, she would have after that. She continued watching you and Yunho walk away, then she got a brilliant idea.
She followed the two of you into the cafeteria and joined you both at the table. She sat next to Yunho, trying to make you look up at her, but both you and Yunho kept your eyes on your food.
"How long have you guys been dating?" Mi-Rae asked.
Yunho looked over at you. "Almost three years."
You smiled and nodded as you looked at the newcomer. "What brought you to Holo, Mi-Rae?"
"My dad." She sighed. "Didn't want to come here in the first place."
Yumiko sat next to you. "You can always leave, Mi-Rae."
You watched Mi-Rae's reaction. She didn't like you or Yumiko, but Yunho, you could tell she took a special liking to him. You saw her shoulder move, as if she was reaching for something, so you stuck your foot out and caught her hand between the bottom of your shoe and the bench of the cafeteria table.
"Hands to yourself, Mi-Rae." You whispered.
You retreated your foot and she got up angrily. You could see the already forming bruise on her fingers.
"She's up to no good." Yumiko whispered. "I caught her looking up a bunch of stuff about you."
You sighed. "Let her. She's only digging a hole that she won't be able to get herself out of."
It was midnight, and Mi-Rae was looking up your name again. She wanted to find out who you were, what made you the way you were. She hated you so much, she wasn't very sure why, but every time she saw you, her mood dropped. She was tired of searching for something relevant when she finally saw an old article about you. It was written nine years ago, in twenty-eleven.
She clicked on it and squinted her eyes at the bright screen. Her curiosity was fed as she read the dreadful, nightmare wakening article about you and your family. She shut her laptop pridefully, as if she just found the cure to a deadly disease. In this case, that disease was your precious reputation.
Meanwhile, you and Yunho were having a staring contest. You playfully pretended like you were going to slap his forehead and he flinched, so you jumped excitedly as you laughed.
"I won!" You exclaimed. "Three to zero, baby!"
He loved hearing your laugh. "Let's play leg games, then."
"Absolutely not. You'd win every time."
He pouted. "What if I wanna win at least once?"
"I guess," you smiled. "I'm already eternally winning anyways."
"How's that?"
You leaned forward and hugged his waist. "I'm already winning because you're my boyfriend."
He made a cute noise and tackled you to the bed. He kissed your cheek and laid his head on your shoulder.
"Then I'm also eternally winning."
Your hand found his hair as the room got quiet. Yunho always made you feel so safe, he made you forget about the horrible things that happened in your past. He made you feel like you always had room to improve and move away from that trauma.
As you and Yunho started falling asleep, you felt this sudden pit of dread open up in your stomach.
While you were finishing your breakfast the next morning, you saw Mi-Rae run in and watched her curiously. She ran up the steps of the stage and grabbed the microphone off of the podium.
You looked at Yumiko and Yunho, then you stood up and looked at Mi-Rae. "Say what you need to say, princess."
Everyone looked at you, then back at Mi-Rae, expecting her to follow your suggestion. She grinned triumphantly.
"Our school president has a dead mother and a homicidal father." Mi-Rae's voice rang out through the cafeteria and your eyes grew dark. "Mr. Kim used to be the headmaster here, but he had to be removed from the premises after he killed Mrs. Kim in the headmasters office when Yena was nine."
Everyone looked at you again. No one knew except for Yunho and Yumiko. You smiled at the ground and looked up at her. You walked up on stage and stood in front of her, then you grabbed her face and made direct eye contact with her.
"You're lucky his homicidal tendencies didn't get passed down the line, aren't you?" You whispered. "Shall I tell everyone why you're actually here, Mi-Rae? Because your mom went to prison and your dad couldn't handle a seventeen year old without mommy dearest?"
She searched your eyes. You weren't playing. You smiled and tapped her cheek as you took the microphone away from her.
"Please get back to your breakfast, everyone." You looked back at Mi-Rae and tucked some hair behind her ear. "I won't tell anyone. I respect people's privacy like that."
Mi-Rae watched as you walked off, completely flustered. How were you not angry or embarrassed? Her blood boiled at the fact that you weren't as flustered as her. She didn't know what she'd do next, but she knew that she wanted you to be on your knees, begging for her to stop ruining you.
Little did she know that you had a sweet surprise for her. You wouldn't be the one on your knees.
