Chapter 13: Lunch Date? I Guess Not
Jane and Jay finally left a few minutes ago. They walked down this mountain and there was a helicopter waiting there to pick them up. Rune is still in the farm and I think he will be going back because like what he always says, he doesn't want me to be alone inside the house.
And in fact, I'm still nervous!
I never lived in a house with a guy before in a long time and I don't like the idea as well. But this one is different. I'm just nervous yet I am not really against it. I actually want it than be with Jane in this house. She gives me some unpleasant feeling because I know she and Rune is hiding something. Like what just happened this morning.
Currently, I was sitting on the couch and watching tv where there is another news about me not showing up to an event. The front door suddenly opened, revealing Rune with a stern face.
"You forgot to lock the door." He scolded me, coming closer.
"I knew you were coming so I didn't bother." I replied, my eyes focused back on the tv screen.
"Still, you should locked the door! What if someone comes in and attacks you? I was fucking away." He spat, his eyes narrowed at me.
I didn't care about his anger. "I will next time, Rune. Don't worry. Jeez, you don't have to be so angry about it."
Rune let out a heavy sigh and tried to calm himself down as he saw me watching my own news. "Stop watching those shits. It will only make you lonely."
"I'm not!" I protested when he grabbed the remote from my hands and turned the channel. "I'm watching, you prick!"
"Language, my lady. I'm not happy with your choice of words." He stated, taking the seat next to me causing me to feel a little discomfort all of a sudden. His closeness is the one that affects me right now and I don't know why! Why does he affect me like this?
I squatted a little farther from him to give us a little space. "Why aren't you at the farm?"
"I just finished my job there." He answered. "And I can't leave you unprotected."
"Unprotected? I just be safe in this house without your help, Rune." I confidently replied, hugging my legs closer to my chest on the sofa.
"Safe? You just forgot to lock the door. Where is safe in that?"
"I just forgot this time, Rune. I learn from my mistakes." I shrugged and smirked.
Rune just chuckled at my response. "I will be going back to the farm later once I walk you to the Inn."
Rolling my eyes, I turned away. "You really won't let me go to work alone, won't you?" My eyes cock on one side.
"Never." He scoffed, leaning back on the couch and sitting like a boss. "Get me a glass of apple juice."
My eyebrow arched in arrogance. "Excuse me? Get it yourself."
"I'm not asking you to get me, I'm telling you to get me. So hurry that sexy ass of yours in the kitchen." He narrowed his eyes at me.
"Since when did you got the balls to say such things to me?!" My voice raises every second.
"Why? Can't I tell you what to do? You're not my master or anything in royalty." Rune stated, calmly.
My mouth gape at his statement. Isn't he getting too comfortable with me to order me around. He is not my master so I'm not going to do it.
"Hurry up!" He hissed at me with a hint of humour in his tone.
"Fuck you." I just found myself obeying him by going to the kitchen to pour some apple juice in a glass and delivered it to him with a 'not happy' look.
"That's more like it. Thank you, my lady." He smirked at me as he took a sip. "Since we are living like a real married couple now, no one but just the two of us in this house, don't expect me to keep on spoiling you like Jay. He has been so kind and soft with you lately but that is not going to work on me."
"I beg your pardon?"
"We will be living like a real married couples now, my lady. You will be cooking and satisfying me from now on." Rune informed me.
"Satisfying?"
"I didn't mean it in a sexual way, my lady. I'm not like that." Rune laughed upon seeing my reaction when he said the word. "You're a smart woman, you get what I mean."
I groaned and crossed my arms. "I thought you are such a nice person because of what you had showed me these past few days it I guess I was wrong. You're still cold hearted."
He chuckled huskily and winked at me. "I told you before, you won't like the real me."
"The heck I care." I flipped my hair back. "As long as you keep me safe I don't care who the real you is."
Rune shrugged and focused his attention on the tv and I was struggling on the side to keep my heart totally calm. I don't why it is beating too fast. Before, just a simple word that he says and utters to me, I get to irritated and so angry but I don't know what is going on to me right now. I didn't care at all. It is like I'm used to his bipolar attitude and approach. One minute, he is very kind then to the next minute, he likes to make my life miserable. Seriously. What is wrong with this guy?
What is wrong with myself?
"Let me just be clear with you about something." I faced him, bravely. "Starting tonight, you will sleep in the other room where Jay and Jane stayed while I will stay my room alone. Are we clear?"
It took seconds before he could answer. "Fine."
My eyes widen. Did he just agreed? He finally accepted something that I said! "Wow, that was easier than I thought."
"I have a feeling that you will not stop until I agree." He murmured.
"Well, you're absolutely correct." I chirped, clapping my hands in victory. "You will stay there and I will stay in my own room."
"Yeah, yeah. I will let you win this time." He cleared his throat. "But only this time."
"Say whatever you want." I pulled my tongue out like a kid and sat further from him.
"Oh, I almost forgot. The villagers are gathering at the square this weekend." He informed.
"For what kind of reason?"
"They say that the stars were amazing that night so everyone was gathering up there to watch them."
My eyebrows arched. "That's it? Just watch the stars?"
"Yep, but that is also a time to socialise with the villagers. Everyone will be there and having some drinks until midnight. The last time I joined them in the same event, it was really fun." He turns his head to face me. "You will enjoy it, I'm sure of it."
"Oh really?" I gasped in disbelief. "What makes you so confident about it?"
"Just a feeling." He shrugged and chuckled. "So, do you want to go somewhere for lunch?"
"What?" Sometimes his question is confusing me.
"Let's go out." Rune insisted, standing up from the couch. "I know someone that owns a shack."
"A shack?" I asked confused.
"A restaurant shack, my lady." He cleared, pulling me up to stand up. "A friend of mine owns it so let's go go there for lunch. I don't feel like cooking."
Rune and I are going out together and just the two of us? Oh my, it's like a date! Oh fuck, now I am having these kinds of thoughts! This is so immature of me. We are just going to eat outside because he doesn't want to cook, that's all! Why am I thinking something different! What is wrong with me?
I shake my thoughts away as Rune and I left the house. Some people on the streets were greeting him as we walk passed them and it made me think that this really is a kind neighbourhood, ya know. I mean, all of them are nice enough that they will greet you even if they are busy working on something.
"You sure know everyone in this place, no?" I asked him with a chuckle.
"Not literally know all of them. The people here are very nice to the point that they will greet you even if they don't know you." He answered, humbly.
We reached the edge of the mountain where you can a see another magnificent view of the whole area and ocean from this place. The shack is a little distant from the others making me think like this place is a little private but the shack is a restaurant even if it looks a little old but well designed. And there is a sign that says Yohan's Shack: Bar and Grill
There are no customers yet but it looks good.
"Come on." Rune takes me inside and we were greeted by a handsome man on the counter. "Hey, man." He greeted.
The man raised his head to see who just came in. "Red, wow. Good to see you, man." They fist bump each other. "You here to eat?"
"Yep, I wanted to tell my wife how a good cook you are." Rune mention, placing an arm around my shoulder.
The guy looked at me and smiled. "Wow, dude. You got yourself a beautiful wife there. Hi, the name's Yohan." He offered his hand to shake which I happily accepted.
"Hi, Yohan. Erm...Carmela." I replied, stepping back a little.
"Please sit down, the restaurant is not filled with customers yet so take whatever table you want." He told us as we take one table near the counter.
He handed us the menu lists and I scanned it to check. Rune and Yohan were happily chatting about some random things and I'm very impressed how good Rune can keep up with everything they talk about. I mean, he is not literally from here so how can he keep up every topic that they spoke of. When you listen to their conversation, it is more like he knows everything that Yohan is talking about. Everything.
"You already pick something you like?" Rune asked me as he pause their conversation.
"Yeah...the shrimp sandwich, please." I told Yohan.
"Coming right up!" He enthusiastically stated and headed inside his counter. The kitchen is also located there so I can see what he was doing. "How about you, Red?"
"Grilled corn and steak." He said. "And red juice for the both of us."
I placed the menu list down and watch Yohan cooks. Come to think of it, this man is very attractive and charming. I don't have a crush on him but I'm surprise to know that there are good looking guy in this mountain.
"You're staring too much, my lady." Rune whispered at me, noticing that I was watching Yohan.
"Huh? No, I was just watching him." I retorted.
"Watching? You are staring at him, obviously. Stop doing that before he turns around and see you."
I rolled my eyes. "I am not, okay? Jeez, it is just very enjoyable to watch him cook."
"I know what is the difference when a person watches and stares, my lady because I do those things at you most of the time." He told me, causing my cheeks to heat. What is he trying to say?!
I quickly narrowed my eyes at him. "Shut up."
I received a laugh from him as he sits back down on the chair. "Now that Jane is gone, I bet it was a sigh of relief to you."
I scoffed. "You always makes assumption ahead of me."
"Well, that is what I do, my lady. I am an agent so I am very expert when it comes to people and what they are thinking about something."
"What? Don't tell me you can read minds." I raised an eyebrow.
"Not those kinds of shit. I have to be aware of the emotions and what is someone is showing because of my job. I watch people's moves and their motives."
"I can say that your job is not the best job on the list." I scoffed with a laugh.
"You can say that." He laughed back, huskily.
"Say...if you have any other job what would you have?" I asked, getting a little curious.
Rune thought for a second. "I haven't thought about that. Ever since I was 10, I was trained to do this so I haven't thought of taking another job."
"But can you quit on being an agent?"
"I never asked because I never had a plan to leave anyway." He shrugged, answering cooly. "And that means that I will be staying unmarried for the rest of my life. My duty is to be at the service only."
Oh.
Why does it feels like there someone pinched my chest.
Is something wrong about that? Of course not.
"Here are your orders." Yohan butted in as he served the meals in front of us.
And the foods look really ravishing. Wow, I might be drooling. I grab a fork and knife to eat the burger. I don't want to eat it with my hands since it's a four inch high burger.
"Wow, this tastes amazing." I can't help but say it.
"Thank you. I'm happy you liked it!" He chanted, "Your husband is my regular customer before. He always comes here to have lunch or dinner."
"I know why, you cook amazingly." I can't help but say it out loud.
"That is too much, Carmela." Rune whispered beside me, pinching my sides causing me to flinch a little.
Huh? What is he saying?! Seriously.
I just gave him a glare then went back on Yohan. "Sorry, I'm talking too much." I chuckled softly.
"Nah, it's alright. All the girls in this mountain talk worse. They would literally try to impress me." Yohan stated, leaning on the counter.
Rune was already taking a bite of his grilled corn. "Why don't you get yourself a girl? You have been living in this island for a long time and you only dated one woman. Go out and explore the world."
Yohan just laughed. "I am planning about it."
"Good." Rune stated, with a smile. "You need a woman, buddy. I assure you, you will be happier."
His statement made me look at him. Seriously? Says the guy who just said that he plans to be unmarried for the rest of his life, eh? He had a twisted mind, eh?
The lunch went by and it was nice meeting Yohan. Good to know that I gain a new person that I can talk to in this village. I'm still getting used on living here but my hate for St. Dominique has finally lessened.
Later at the Inn, I helped Sarah a lot at the kitchen. There are a lot of travellers coming in to stay for the night so we cooked a lot of meals that they desire. I chose not to expose myself frequently to the travellers because I need to be careful of my identity as well. Travellers might know who I am so I rather stay inside the kitchen most of the time.
"Carmela, are you coming this weekend to watch the stars?" Sarah asked me while we were cooking.
"Yeah, Red wanted to come." I answered. "How about you?"
"Of course! Starry night is held every month here because the beautiful stars only comes out seldom." She stated, turning to me. "You know, I have dream when I was kid related to the starry night."
"Really? What is it?"
"My grandma told me that starry nights were the best moment to kiss the person you love. I know it sounds weird and idiotic but I believe in it. It just looks so romantic to kiss someone under the sparkling stars, don't you agree?"
I just don't know what to say to that. Clearing my throat, I thought of something that I can say. "That sounds good. Keep that dream and it sure will come true."
Sarah laughed. "I'm sure Red will kiss you too."
My eyes suddenly widens at the thought. "Of course not! He surely won't kiss me!" I just blurted out without even thinking.
"Why not? He's your husband." She pointed out, continuously laughing. "Besides, you couple are not the only who will be kissing for sure. The entire village will gather there for sure."
And I don't care if they all kiss each other. I don't have any plan to go along with them.
Who am I going to kiss in the first place? I don't like the idea that I will kiss Rune because that is surely will just became an awkward situation.
Gulping at the thought, it still made me a little nervous though.
No, Jasmine! There is no way that he will be kissing you! Why is going on in this mind?! Jeez, I'm going crazy at my own idiocy.
I made sure that I did my job well in the Inn. Frank told me that I can rest early because we weren't really that busy when midnight arrived. But Rune is not yet here so I probably will wait. I was mopping the floor when he finally comes in to pick me up.
"There's your call." Frank took the mop from me. "Thank you for your hardwork, kid. Good job."
I just chuckled and head over to Rune. He had his genuine smile as I approach him and I can help but feel some butterflies inside my stomach. This is so weird.
"You look cheerful." He complimented me.
"I do not." I rolled my eyes and walked ahead of him out of the Inn.
"Does mopping the floor makes you happy?" He wondered.
I shook my head. "Of course not! In my entire life, Dad never let me touch a single mop so I am not used to it."
"And he did a great job. It was very obvious that you don't know how to clean the floor. I bet Frank already wanted to snatch the mop away from you." He joked, laughing huskily.
I laughed with him for some unknown reason. I just realised right now, I am getting very comfortable when I'm with Rune. All those irritation I had towards him was vanished so fast that I am starting to depend on him. Even thought I still have to protect myself but I can help it.
We were chatting on our way home, and we never fail to miss a topic. Somehow it looks like we are always on the same page. I know that Rune is also holding back because he would cut off the conversation when the topic is becoming more personal. Still, I don't mind. Because I hold something too so I could protect myself too.
But one honest and real thing, I really am starting to depend on him. It is true. I hate it.
I hate the thought that we getting closer because I don't want to be involve to a person who is not real to me. I know all of these are just a show off, once this mission is done, he will ignore me again and leave us. Like before.
And I don't want to get too at ease at something that is only temporary.
When we arrived at the house, I will be sleeping alone in the room so I am quite happy. Finally, a privacy.
"I'll be sleeping now, my lady. If you need anything, don't be afraid to call me." Rune stated before heading to the other room but before he could enter, he paused then calls for me. "My lady."
"What?" I questioned.
A satisfied smile appeared on his lips causing my heart to thumb excitedly. "It's a great day with you. I had fun." That was the only thing he said before leaving me there frozen on my spot.
Oh jeez, what are you doing to me, Rune? Why do I feel so confuse for some reason that I don't even know.
My life couldn't get any better, noh? Urg.
To be continued...
Sorry for the lat update, guys. I was so busy this whole week. Being a grade 12 student is very stressful! A lot of quizzes and reporting. Very fine week. 🙄
