Chapter two
I paced around my room, waiting for Jack to return. I was not leaving without my book, but i had less and less time available to sneak out. I had written my book for him, Staying true to my word. Jack seemed like a nice boy, struggling to survive this madness. so i wrote a quick story, in my probably terrible handwriting i had never seen before. But my friend and James had helped me learn how to write in a straight line without being able to see it. they also helped me learn how to read braille.
At last i heard a knock on my door and i ran over to it and opened it up.
"here is your delivery, sir," Jack's voice came form the doorway.
"and here is yours," I said, handing him the thin book i had written about freedom.
"thanks!" Jack said, and from the sound of his feet he just have run down to his room.
I stuffed the braille book into my backpack, planing on reading it on the ride to New York. I then stealthily stepped out into the hallway and shut my door. Being blind was not all that bad, as i could hear further away as well and smell much better then the average human. I could hear the vent, the air conditioning flowing out quietly. I reached over to it, my pistol was now on a belt on my waist for quick access.
I took my hand-made screw driver i had build with James out of a tree branch. I felt around for the eight screws that held the large vent together, and began to quietly take them out. That's when i heard the foot steps. They sounded like they where downstairs, but still, it was time to be extra careful. I stuffed all the screws i had already taken out inside my empty pocket, hoping they would not make to much sound.
Once I got the vent open, the foot steps where even louder. someone was coming up the stairs. I frantically yanked the vent off, not caring about noise anymore. everyone else was too big to fit inside the vent. The footsteps grew even louder and faster, as if someone was sprinting up the stairs. I quickly dived into the vent, hitting my forehead on something metal.
"Whats going on here?" I heard someone shout.
The footsteps stopped, and i heard a gasp. I crawled as quickly as i could through the tiny vent, and felt with my hands where i was going. At least he still had his cover, nobody know who had escaped. they just know somebody did. But this still meant someone might try and block off my escape exit. I crawled as quickly as a short human with a backpack full of paper, pens, a book and a whole lot of probably disgusting food in it could.
I felt the fresh air on his face and grew excited. I had made it. I pushed the exterior vent out, as it was already loose. I had done that on one of the days where I was out to steal, I decided I might need it in the future and I had taken all the screws out. I stumbled out into the fresh air, then began to sprint down the unfamiliar streets.
I could hear most things before i ran into them, but that's just most things. after slamming my face right into multiple cars and other things i had no idea what they where, i finally made it to the docks.
"Can someone help me?" I shouted in an exhausted, scared voice.
"What can i help you with?" Some mans voice said.
"I-I have a boat ride to New York, can you tell me where it is?" I said, still panting from all the running. my voice wavy as i was on the verge of crying.
"Oh, don't cry man, its just over there," The man said.
"I-I'm blind, Please push me in the right direction," I said, not really knowing how to speak to... humans.
"Oh, sure man," they said, and i felt a shove on my back.
"Um- thanks," I said, finally catching my breath and calming myself down.
I set off in the direction i had been pushed in, and eventually ran into something metal. Looks like i found my boat. I thought, its usually how i found things these days. I followed the noise of footsteps of the people loading up the boat with supplies to be shipped to New York. I slipped past the people and felt around until i found a tiny crack in between two large boxes. I'm guessing they are cardboard boxes, by the texture.
I sat in my crammed space, excited as i was finally on my way to freedom and education. At some point, i fell asleep to the shouts and footsteps of men, and he ocean waves.
*~*
I blinked myself awake. I could see, though being blind, i could see some light. that was something odd about me, i can see bright lights in the dark. but this light as all over, probably indicating it was day. I stood up, almost falling over from how weak my joints where from my uncomfortable sleeping place. I felt my way around, and hit into someone.
"Oi, Kid, what are you doing here?" I heard someone say, among the shouts of other people and cries of seagulls.
"Are we out in the ocean?" I asked, trying not to sow how scared i was of the water.
"Yes we are, Kid. cant you see?" The voice laughed.
"Actually no i cant see, i'm blind," I said seriously.
"Oh, sure Kid," The voice said, and by the sound of their footsteps they walked away.
I walked forward until i ran into a railing. I put my hands on the railing and leaned on it, feeling the wind in my face. At least i cant see the ocean, i can pretend its not there. I thought, pushing back the memories of the hurricane that had made him an orphan. His brother had described the bodies in the streets way to well, and I had been haunted by rain, ocean and large winds ever sense.
"FIRE!" Someone frantically shouted.
I whipped around. I could now hear the faint crackle of something in flame. I took a deep breath and ran towards the fire. I could hear someone screaming for help... when no one else could.
"KID WHAT ARE YOU DOING? HELP US PUT IT OUT!" The same voice from earlier shouted.
I ignored him and proceeded to walk quickly across the boat, then i fell down some stairs, and that's when i felt the heat of the fire. I heard the frantic calls of someone shouting for help. I could not see the fire, but i could feel and hear it. and smell it. I heard it crackle and roar around me, and i felt it burning the ends of my ponytail as i sprinted down a hallway.
"HELP PLEASE!" someone yelled close by.
I ran towards the voice, it felt as if the fire was on me, and the smoke was suffocating my lungs.
"Please!" said the voice, quieter now.
At first i thought i may have passed the person, then i realized they must not be able to breath and had to stop shouting. Then i heard the terrible breathing.
"save me," The person said, seeing me.
I felt around them, and realized there was something large on top of them. Something wooden, something on fire. I pushed with all my might on the heavy thing holding the person down until it moved. I heard a gasp and helped them up. but my now, i could hear, smell and feel the fire completely surrounding us.
"thank you," The person gasped.
I nodded in turn, and then tried to think of a plan. that's when i heard the swishing f water in a bucket, and felt water splash around me.
"Lets get you outta here," A new voice said, and i heard multiple peoples footsteps come into the room.
I was escorted out of the room and brought back up to the main deck.
"you're a hero," Someone said.
I ignored them, I was not hero. I was just a blind small child, with big dreams. Someone wrapped me with a towel, and i gratefully accepted it. The fire had been put out, and I had saved a life.
