Chapter 3

A/N: Hulloooo!!! You'll like this chapter, I know of it!

***

I felt pulled to go into one of the towers. But the odd thing was, I wanted to go down, not up. So, I did. Students noticed and gathered in the auditorium, texting their friends and adding on to the crowd. It didn't affect me, because my purpose was to go down and come back up. After nearly all of the school was in the auditorium, that's when I made my move. A girl grabbed my shoulder and handed me a flashlight and camera. I accepted them and thanked her. Worry etched over everyone's faces, but I wasn't worried. I was determined to find out what is causing that pull.

I put the camera neck-strap on, then the wrist strap of the flashlight. I clutched the flashlight and pushed open the discolored panel door. It smoothly opened out, and I examined the door. No cobwebs anywhere in sight, and the door frame was slightly taller than me, giving me a perfect fit to it. I stepped inside, an eerie moonlight-like glow emitting the staircase. I walked down, the door quietly closing behind me. No sounds were heard, not even a critter's legs.

I began humming a tune foreign yet familiar to me. The glowing intensified as I hummed, so I turned the flashlight off. It was quite a beautiful sight. If you were me, of course. I continued walking, humming entire songs that I didn't even know I knew. As long as I hummed, the light stayed. I never thought about what would happen if I stopped. But I didn't, because the walk down took only a few minutes.

I stopped at a long corridor, torches on each side, but unlit. I began humming a new tune, this one more calming and warm, and the torches magically lit themselves. There were vents for air, so the oxygen levels didn't decrease. I continued walking for a little while, then came to a connection of the other tunnel. They both connected into one long one.

I walked all the way to the end of the tunnels, reaching a door. It had no handle or keyhole. But on it was writing. It looked weird and Latin, but as I looked closer, it became readable.

It read:

If one holds a torch and holds their breath in a hallway without ventilation, why does the torch go out?

This was easy. I knew about these kinds of things. The door was dusty, unlike the corridors, and look unused.

I wrote:

The flame suffocates from lack of oxygen. Just like the human.

The door opened slowly, the dust falling off and onto the floor. Torches lit blue as the door was fully opened and I was inside. I had ignored the camera, so I decided to record. I removed the lid and opened the screen, then pressed record. The flashlight was in my pocket, so I didn't need it, and so my hand was holding the camera. I didn't show any sign of fright, because I wasn't. I'm not scared, and never will be.

At the end was another riddle, and a chest with no locks. I walked to the chest and read the riddle.

It read:

If one of each gender were present, and were in love, who is the liar?

This was simple. If they were both in love, they'd both be loyal. But the girl would hide secrets and truths, so she'd be the liar. We girls tend to sometimes be untrustworthy. Especially since this love isn't true, the gender that cheats the most and lies is the female. (I'm not sexist. I'm a girl myself. So please, don't call me sexist.)

"The answer: the girl." And just like that the chest opened. In it revealed two keys. On the handles were circles and then a piece of metal sticking off, forming a male sign on one and female on the other. I picked up the female key and shut the lid. The riddle was gone.

I'm guessing the right tower, the tunnel opposite mine on my left entering this tunnel, is for the male counterpart. Camera still in hand, I stuck the key in my pocket with my free one. I turned the camera towards me and out of my face at a respectable distance.

"This tunnel has two riddles. One on the door and one above the chest. After both are answered, they reset for the male counterpart. As you saw, there were metal keys in the chest that were indicating their owner's gender, mine being the female sign. Any male is not eligible, only one that feels a pull to go underneath and into the tunnels. That pull is the key. That male will come down here and collect their key, then enter his designated tower as I do, and we shall unlock the chests on the tower together, before sunrise on the eighth day following this one."

I stopped the recording and turned it off. I exited the corridors and into the staircase leading back up to the theatre.

When I reached the door, I lightly pressed on it, and it willfully opened. There were students still lingering at the door, most had gone home. The girl that let me borrow her camera and flashlight was asleep by the door. I removed the camera and took out the flashlight and laid them in her lap. I took a notebook (nicely, I asked for it) and wrote instructions on what she should do with the video. I ripped off the paper and laid it in her lap, then handed back the pen and paper to the nice person who let me borrow it. I left after waking up the girl.

It grew a little dark out, and I knew I had been in there quite a while. Not a week, but it was a while.

At school the next day, the video played on the tv's throughout the school. They played on repeat for a while until the announcements, allowing kids to record it on their phones and share it to their friends. I still had the key, and it was on a leather necklace string. A lot of males were excited, but I knew that none of them felt the pull. Several people were gathering into the auditorium with sleeping bags and claiming spots. The teachers even did this, and put up large tents outside for anyone who planned on staying the night on the seventh day. We all still attended class, but I knew sometime the male will claim his key and we will open those beautiful yet mysterious chests.
