Prologue

Enid Pettigrew was a simple woman or so she liked to be called. A woman who took no tolerance to nonsense and made sure that her family was, if not is, the best out of the village. The young woman, although a widow and single mother, would not hesitate to point out the flaws and insecurities that her children had from Peter's chubby stature to Simon's rigid nature when speaking, it was all flaws to her, flaws that needed to be fixed. Countless times she stood in the doorway of the bathroom, watching Simon throw up his meals because he was only suppose to be having two a day and not four, countless times she slapped away Peter's hand from grabbing another pancake or drumstick to eat, coaxing her son into feeling as if he was full when he truly wasn't.
Countless times, Simon pushed over his food to the boy or threw the rest away in favor of drinking water or even doing exercise that landed him passed out in the backyard. Peter couldn't remember the first time his mother had truly allowed him and Simon off of her tight leash for the young woman, as charming as she might be, was suffocating the twins with every chance she got. It was a wonder to how Peter even became chubby in the first place until it was revealed that Simon had been sneaking up food for him, tearing off bits of his own meals in order to feed his brother as if they were starving rats .
On the belief that their mother was simply caring for them, the twins obeyed her every command, they took her every word to heart and believed that they were flaws in society. Peter was too fat, he had buck teeth, he was slow and lacked intelligence. Simon was gaining weight, he was too masculine, he shouldn't be so improper. Such flaws that the twins had drilled into their minds, it was no wonder that they turned out worser than their mother planned it out to be.
Edin Pettigrew, apart from being a simple woman, was also a persuasive mother. While holding Simon's arms and watching him squirm and sob, she would often speak to him. What did you do wrong today? Why are you being punished? What are you? He didn't have a answer to most questions but she tolerated that, to a degree of patience that is before she was back to watching him squirm and sob as she would often do, speak to him in such a soothing tone it was almost loving, it is loving.
"Do you want Peter to go through this?"
He provided a answer that time around, he always did. Edin, as often as she punished the younger of her children, never saw fit to use physical punishment against Peter. What was the use when you could simply damage him mentally? So, she would smile at him as they sat at the dinner table and as often as she did, she spoke to him much like she spoke to Simon. Aren't you getting fat? Don't you want to have a girlfriend one day? Won't you slow down on your eating? You're getting chubby aren't you? Who are you?
For a simple woman, Edin was more than willing to care for her children when the owls came that fateful day. Peter could still remember his mother whispering in his ears in a sickeningly sweet voice. Simon could still remember her dragging her fingernails down his arm as he choked on his own sobs while pressing his back up against the wall. To say that the twins were elated that they could escape their senile mother in Hogwarts was a understatement, the two boys were more than happy to have received their letters.
Then came the day of getting their supplies, the wands were first as Edin was a woman of skill and if her sons didn't show it, there were no reasons for them to leave her. Peter was more than anxious when he walked inside, shaking in his own shoes and despite his twin clinging to him like a leech, he still managed to draw attention to himself. Being the first boy up to test if he had any magical prowess, Edin never did remain on the subject of accidental magic with her sons, he was more than willing to start screaming when his wand gave off sparks of multiple colors. Was that good? He hoped it was.
Next was Simon who could only stare from behind his mother at Ollivander as if he from outer space. He couldn't quite process that he was getting his first wand today, he had seen the sparks from Peter's wand and that seemed to further enhance his anxiousness as he was ushered forward and had to stare up at the wand owner with wide blue eyes. When a single box was placed in front of him, Simon hurriedly backed away as if the wand was toxic, he glanced towards his frowning Mother and then towards the owner who still held out the wand, the only wand that was picked out. Was he going to test out one wand and be done with it? What if it didn't work? What if he was a squib and had to go back to his mother? What if it realized he was worthless and didn't need him?
Thoughts buzzed in his mind but without more hesitance than he had already shown, Simon picked up the wand almost gingerly, turning it in his fingers with large eyes.
"Just do a little flick, Simon."
He heard his brother who was busy looking at his own wand in delight. Simon blinked heavily before giving his wrist a soft flick which not only caused the wand to spark, but it also caused a tiny flame to erupt which only made his mother frown harder.
"It's a willow wand Miss, perfect for wizards such as your son and highly adaptable to none verbal spells which he might enjoy, I take it?"
Simon was never one to openly speak, it was more so the fact that his voice was never truly there. When Edin nodded slowly to confirm the fact, Simon let the tension in his shoulders slowly ease away as his mother ushered them out the wand shop and off to the pets. Edin always did enjoy a little company.
Whereas Peter grew to adore the Tawny owl that sat in its cage, Simon was more of a picky person as with every animal he noticed, he couldn't quite seem to like one, if not all. It wasn't until his eyes landed upon a small little kitten, looking at all the kids with wide eyes that Simon found himself drawn to it. Slowly walking forward, the mousy brown haired boy offered the small kitten his finger, watching as it sniffed him cautiously.
He looked back and forth before giving off a nervous smile and finally deciding to speak. His voice was softer than normal and could barely be heard if he wasn't leaning so close.
"You're like me aren't you? Desperate for love? Don't worry... You'll be coming with us and soon you'll get all the love you want, I promise."
Truth be told, after the day of supply shopping, the twins were even more happy when they realized that they could stay within the castle as they boarded the train. No more of their mother whispering into their ears, holding them down as she spoke about more than just their flaws, about their very existence.
Of course, Every year they still had to go back and while Peter had new friends to lean on, new people to interact with, Simon was alone, hidden in the shadow of his older brother, watching and wishing that he wasn't such a mistake.
So, when third year comes around the corner, Simon believes himself to be alone once more until he gets sucked into a adventure with his twin and the rest of the marauder's that not only tests his skill but his loyalty.
