The memory soon ended. Marjorie was jarred back into the current conversation, tears flowing down her face. "What about Dad then ? Should I just forget him like you've done ?" This comment alone made the conversation immensely awkward.
Her mother looked absolutely offended. But could you blame her ? Her own daughter just basically said she was practically erasing her father from the family. Like he didn't even exist. Marjorie' mother rose from her seat slowly. In a calm voice she said, "실례해요." (Excuse me.)
The rest of the morning carried on in an uneasy silence. Marjorie soon went up to check on her mother. "Mom, are you alright ? I didn't mean what I said at breakfast." Her mother emerged from Marjorie room with a couple suitcases. "I packed for you, Marjorie ah. Now there is nothing holding you back."
Truthfully, Marjorie had hurt her mother. In more ways than she would ever know. "But I--" Her mother didn't even bother acting as if she was happy or excited. She simply just wanted Marjorie away. Maybe space is what they really need. "Have fun, Marjorie ah. I hope it was worth it."
Before long, Marjorie was already out of the house after packing a few more things. Her friends helped her settle into her new place. The place was gorgeous. Her new home was spacious & even had a few extra rooms. Her friends even stocked her fridge as a mini housewarming gift. Luckily, Marjorie was already planned to move in without any noticed. She somewhat expected things to get tense after her initial conversation with her mother.
"What will you do with the extra rooms ?", one of her friends had asked out of pure curiosity. Marjorie was excited about this new chapter of her life. There were endless possibilities for her now. She had the freedom to figure out who she truly was. No pressure attached. "몰라요. (I don't know.) Renovate them ?"
Her mind drifted back to a memory of her father. The very man she missed dearly to this day. The very first time she saw the telescope.
Her father was up late when he heard little feet trudge into the room slowly. He chuckled, picking Marjorie up. "왜 깨어 있어요?" (Why are you awake ?) She teared up fearing she was going to be scolded for being up when she was supposed to be asleep. It was the night before her eighth birthday. "I couldn't sleep..."
Her father sighed. He knew it was just her overall excitement for her birthday. He quietly lead her out to the balcony. "What is this, Dad ?" Her cute little finger pointed at the telescope out of curiosity & wonder. "That is a telescope. You can see things you can't regularly see with it. You could see the stars."
Once back to her senses, Marjorie situated the telescope on her new balcony. Little did she know what lied ahead of her.
