I feel slight shivers creeping up my spine. Tomorrow is the day of the Aptitude Test. I honestly have no idea what is waiting for me. My mom keeps telling me stories about how terrified she was of going into that room. I don't know what to think of that but maybe I should just trust the test like everybody else on that day. Who am I kidding, what should I worry about exactly? What faction I will simply get? It is not that hard if you looked at it from someone else's perspective.

Erudite, Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless or my own faction Amity. It all looks like child's play.

Our faction always taught us that you shouldn't worry about the Aptitude Test. Our normal rule; don't worry. Think peaceful. Value kindness and harmony. Never use violence.

''Good morning, grumpy head!'' Nadia squeals happily as I walk into the Erudite-shaped school building biting my lip, almost making it bleed. I smile trying to act as normal as I can. Why do I feel like I am going to vomit when I think about being like this the whole time? Because I have lived in Amity since birth? Because the smell of all the farms are making me sick? Because we never learned to defend ourselves from such dangerous situations as getting attacked? Why do I feel like leaving?

Nadia waves a hand in front of my face. ''Hellooo? Somebody awake in there?'' She asks jokingly about my absent face expression.

I look up from my thoughts and I throw in a fake smile even though it looks real since I am too good at it, in my own opinion.

''Yeah, sorry. I was just thinking about the test.'' I say trailing off a bit of what I just have shouted in my mind.

''What do you think you'll get?'' She asks being almost too interested while hooking her arm with mine as we walk off towards class. I decide to act more like her to convince her more.

''I don't know. No one knows what they'll get.'' I state as a fact.

Nadia nods in agreement. ''That's true indeed,'' she nods. ''Leave that task to Erudite.''

She smiles at a couple of Amity friends that stand at the doorway from Faction History waiting for the teacher to open the door. Nadia speeds over quickly dragging me along like a bag of salt and quickly joins in on the conversation.

The school day went as rough always. First we have class and then at break we sit at the Amity table next to the window. Just to get as close to nature as possible, some main rule decided. I stick my fork into my lettuce and scan the cafeteria. At the very end of the cafeteria I oversee the Erudite. They always look too busy with their reading, as if they feed themselves with words and facts instead of food. They are ridiculous in my opinion. As if anyone would choose the know-it-alls.

In the middle of the cafeteria the Candor people are arguing loudly while eating. They make a lot of hand movements and I can't even think of joining that harsh faction. They probably try to make you speak the truth in front of the whole faction just to embarrass yourself during your initiation.

I twirl my face to the left side of the cafeteria. There are the Abnegation. They are eating quietly just to not to bother anyone around them. They look stiff most of the time, as if they are paralysed. It is why the city has decided to call them Stiffs to make fun of them. Anybody joining that faction must be coming from Dauntless to do such a brave thing.

Hmm. Dauntless. I turn my head from the quiet part of the cafeteria to the loud part. They are not sitting at the table but more on it. They are laughing loudly while a Dauntless girl tries to push a Dauntless boy off the table. He pokes her in her hip and the girl yells from laughing. They seem fine. I really just said that. They seem fine. They only do crazy things.

And last is my faction Amity. It's the most normal faction here. Some feelings inside of me don't want to leave Amity desperately. The Amity boys and girls at the end of our table are singing happily as others make jokes.

I turn my attention to the Amity girl, Maisie, who is telling Nadia and the other girls a joke about a man with two buckets. I laugh even though I don't know what the joke is about and the other girls laugh with me. Amity is alright. It's peaceful and it's safe. But I don't know if I can live with that all my life. What if I once get grabbed from my back? Should I compliment him to defend myself? Like: ''Could you please let go of me, because I really really really like your jacket.'' No.

As I step into the bus an Abnegation man stands up to make place for me. ''Thank you.'' I say kindly thanking the man for giving up his seat and the Abnegation man nods with a polite smile. Abnegation are sweet, really, but sometimes they annoy me. They do everything to put others first, even though it isn't necessary. I sit down and Nadia sits in the one in front of me which was empty.

''Are you alright?'' She asks me.

I look up. I really really have to stop thinking so much. I am paying less attention to what is happening around me.

''Yes I am. Don't worry.'' I say, laughing at the last sentence because say it in the same way our faction leader Johanna Reyes tells us. Nadia laughs too and without her seeing it, I let out a relieved sigh.

The holes in the streets are making the bus bump but the Dauntless behind me only see the fun in it. Just like Amity only they are still holding on to something. The Dauntless hold nothing which makes me wonder if they have seen more of the bus in their lives than I did. I laugh at it. They will always be braver than I will ever be.

When we get home Nadia asks me to go to the orchard to pluck some apples to clear our minds. I nod and run to grab a basket from the shelter.

''Are you sure you were okay in the bus?'' She wonders while she plucks some apples from the trees more further away from where I am, half covering her face in the shadows of them.

''Hmm. Not that okay but at least alright.'' I sigh.

Nadia stops plucking and looks at me. ''You're nervous,'' she whispers. ''You're worried.''

My face reddens but I hide it by climbing my ladder more higher towards another branch.

''Demi, you can just tell me,'' she still stands still to look at me. ''Really, I won't tell Johanna. And I think everyone is a little bit nervous, don't you think. I mean, what if they in fact use violence?''

I climb off the ladder and jump into the dirt that fills the orchard paths with a beautiful structure, giving me the idea I am walking through a fairy tale.

''Yes. Maybe I am, '' I grunt as I catch my breath huffing. ''I might be scared to death. Dying.''

Nadia grins a little. ''It's okay, I was just teasing you. Besides, I am also a little bit nervous. If you knew how hard my heart was beating you would think I was already dead.''

I climb back up my ladder, laughing at her joke and start to pluck apples from the next branch. My eyes suddenly rest themselves on an apple that looks very good and tasty. Only it hangs a little bit too out of my reach. I step off my ladder and set my feet on the first branch. It threatens to break but I place my other feet on a branch that is even higher.

''Demi? What are you doing?'' Nadia shouts. ''Get down here!''

''Wait.'' I yell. ''I have to get that apple.''

''There is no need, just get back here!'' Nadia's voice becomes worried. ''You could fall.''

''I don't care, I want it.'' I shout and try to concentrate. I know my personality now shows off that I am acting Dauntless. And I know Nadia also sees that. As I reach more higher I can also see more land.

''Nadia you have to see this!'' I yell at her. I look down and I see she holds a hand above her eyes to block the sunlight from blinding her. Her cheeks are red from today.

''Are you crazy or something?'' She asks and I laugh.

''Kind of, maybe,'' I giggle. ''Come on it's not so scary!''

I see the hesitation in her eyes but then she decides to climb up my ladder and at the end she steps on the first branch. Her knuckles are white since she is grabbing the branches very tightly to get a grip.

''Come on, you can do it!'' I cheer at her. I sit on a big branch and look down while supporting her. She climbs higher and I see her arms shake as the tension becomes stronger. ''Don't be afraid, or else you indeed will fall.''

Nadia is almost on the same height. When she is close enough I grab her arm and pull her on the same branch as me.

''See? You made it!'' I giggle. Nadia laughs with me out of breath. I now mention the apple which is hanging on the perfect height in front of me. I grab it and hand it to her. ''Here. You deserve it.''

Nadia grabs the apple and smiles back. ''Thank you. You were really acting brave, you know?'' She mentions and bites the apple.

''Why would you say that?'' I frown. ''I was just excited.''

But deep down I know Nadia is trying to say I was acting brave; Dauntless. I didn't give up to get on that branch just go get a stupid apple. What about Nadia? She didn't deny when I asked her to get up here. I wonder why.

I have no breath left as I jump from the ladder to solid ground. I support the ladder as Nadia jumps off as well and throw out all of my breath.

''Wow. That actually was kind of fun!'' Nadia laughs and I smile in response.

''Indeed. We should do this more!'' I say excitedly.

Nadia's face turns from smiling into a sad smile. ''Yeah. If we both choose Amity.'' She sighs.

I nod also showing off a sad smile. Maybe we won't see each other ever again after the Choosing Ceremony. I never actually thought about that. I worried about the test and what the results would be.

''It will be okay. We just have to go through that test as if it was nothing.'' I say and hook my arm with hers when we walk out of the orchard.

I try to act my normal Amity girl act again and it works as always. We both walk over the field to the dome where most of our friends and family are waiting for lunch.

''You girls worked well. Thanks a lot for your help, costs less time for the old women to pluck.'' Johanna grins a little as we place the baskets filled with apples on the floor next to her.

''No problem, Johanna. We just had to do something after school to cure our boredom.'' Nadia chuckles and smiles. Johanna smiles back kindly as we all know her here and she looks at the baskets.

''And I appreciate it. Well, I see your schedule here is already over for today so you girls both get yourself some spare time. Take some rest. There's diner at six PM as always so until then, get clean and changed. Oh and Nadia...'' Johanna's kind eyes turn towards Nadia's. ''You have to take over for Ashley in the kitchen. She got sick out of nothing.''

Nadia nods to what she was asked. Johanna is sweet and I really appreciate the spare time she gives us. I look at her. She is small but still has an Amity look to complete her. She also has a scar and I ask myself how she got it but there are many ways how to get wounds in Amity. I smile at Johanna and we still stand there kind of awkwardly, so I decide to start the conversation.

''You know what, I don't want any spare time. I will wash the apples.'' I ensure them and pick up my basket and Nadia's on which Johanna smiles even wider.

''That's good. I think I'll miss you two the most.'' She kind of trails off from thoughts.

Wait, she knows we might choose another faction? I mentally shake that thought off and I nod.

''We'll miss you too, Johanna,'' Nadia nods too. ''Whatever the outcome might be.''

''Good. Alright, I won't bother you girls anymore. I've got some paperwork to do.'' Johanna states.

''Okay, Johanna.'' Nadia smiles and we both give her a hug. That is how Amity greets and says goodbyes, like we are all one big family here. Johanna walks off to her office and Nadia and I walk into the dome, looking for our friends.

Maisie, the girl who sat at our table at lunch, waves at us as we walk into the dome. She runs over to us and gives us both a tight hug almost crushing us.

''I started worrying already.'' She breathes while she wipes the sweat off her forehead. I see she was busy with the dishes from lunch.

''You shouldn't worry.'' I joke.

Maisie and Nadia laugh and Maisie pokes my arm. ''But anyways, where were you two at lunch? I had to sit with Bryan and Grace. I think you know how I felt.''

I grin. Bryan and Grace are together for a while now. Grace was a friend of Maisie and Bryan was a boy who once randomly had to sit with us at dinner since Cameron, his only friend, was sick. They turned out to be talking all evening long about interests I do not even have. Like knitting or making flower crowns out of the poppies in the field.

''We went to the orchard. Don't worry though. We went there to pluck apples. Johanna is very happy with them,'' Nadia smiles proudly and I smile too. ''But I still have to work in the kitchen during dinner. Well that is actually not that bad if you ask me.''

Maisie nods in agreement due to the fact she has worked many times in the kitchen and handing out food helped her socialise.

''Aren't you scared that it could be your last time working in the kitchen? I mean, man I will freaking miss this place if I would be choosing another faction,'' Maisie sighs while looking around her taking out the Amity scenery. Her eyes stop at the big tree in the middle of the dome. ''And mostly the tree. Maybe even the tree the most.''

I look at it. At sundown the sun always shines on the tree. Yes, I would miss that too. Sundown. But maybe I don't have to miss it as badly as I think I will. Maybe I will stay here at Amity and I can admire the tree and sundown forever.

''Hey!'' I hear behind me. I turn around and lock eyes with Bryan, Grace, Charity and Cameron.

''Hey!'' I smile at them all embracing them one by one.

''Hey.'' Cameron responds being the only one doing so. The other ones greet with a hug or a poke being all playful at the end of the day.

''So,'' Bryan starts. ''Tomorrow's the big day.''

He seems too excited and it annoys me just a little bit. He has easy talking. He is a natural Amity born just like Grace, Maisie and Charity. Only Cameron seems to withdraw his smile a bit as Bryan starts about it. But I could be wrong. Maybe he is sure about what he is but he is just completely silent about it.

''I still think I'll get Amity,'' Charity says. ''But we will never know. Maybe each and everyone of us gets the unexpected.''

''Yeah,'' Nadia laughs snorting. ''Bryan being Dauntless. I'd like to see that.''

Maisie just finished the dishes and we all sit around a table. I sit in between Nadia and Cameron looking at my plate to ignore Cameron. I have to admit that sometimes he is flirting with me. He gets on my nerves sometimes even though I do not say it. I could be free from him after the Choosing Ceremony.

The Choosing Ceremony. The test. Erudite, Candor, Abnegation, Amity. Dauntless. It's all spinning through my head like a hurricane. I grab my head and blink for a second. Someone grabs my arm and I look up.

''Demi, are you okay?'' I hear a voice coming from my left. My face turns and I see the worried eyes from Nadia. Normally the Amity shouldn't worry about things like this but Nadia clearly is.

I sigh. ''Yeah I am fine. Just a little confused. It's just the test.''

''You shouldn't worry about it,'' Maisie mentions. ''There are worse things that could happen.''

''You know what. You're right, Maisie,'' I say not only to calm her but because it's also the truth. ''I shouldn't worry. I should trust the test. I mean what's the worst they can do? Look weird at me?'' the bell goes for dinner.

''Go with happiness.'' I keep repeating.

The other one that was supposed to work with Nadia in the kitchen, Nick, came home with a lazy glare when he heard he had to work in the kitchen too. So I volunteered to take over his job. Nick also deserves to get some spare time just like Nadia and I got.

''Hey you, enjoying your work?'' Cameron chuckles as he walks past me with his plate. I scoop up some food.

''Go with happiness, Cam.'' I laugh.

''Go with happiness as well, Mrs. Murray.'' Cameron laughs back and he walks over to Nadia. I hear him make jokes with her and I realise I could better call him clown for some reasons. At some parts he is also quiet and serious which is so special about him. He can be mysterious.

I almost forgot my job. I scoop up the food for the Amity girl who sat at the end of the table in the cafeteria with the singing people.

''Go with happiness, by the way, you have a great voice!'' I say smiling. It could be my last day here so why not compliment someone? The girl thanks me with a wide smile as if this is the first time someone really complimented her about it.

This place is too good to be true. The people, the sun, the trees. I am too dumb to make up the fact that I wanted to leave. I know I should stay. But at the same time, why would I? I haven't been out there. I haven't seen what possibilities there are besides Amity. I always went straight back home after school. I have always been on these farms. Why would I stay if I can go out there and explore?
