Chapter 1
Borealis, the moon that shone in the North lit the entire planet below it, trying its best to provide some light to the planet known as Astrominara during the night. Astrominara is a pretty silent planet throughout the night, but you are still able to hear a few nocturnal Animalialis scurrying around in the woods, hunting for some prey to eat, or even playing around with their friends and families. Apart from that, everything was silent and that's just how I liked it.
Laying my head back against the cold rooftop, I stared out into the open sky looking out at the stars covered the night sky almost like if someone splattered white paint on a black canvas. Borealis was out in the sky as well giving off light like it was the sun of the night sky. I took a deep breath, my lungs taking in the cold, crisp air blowing throughout the night. My skin grew goosebumps as the wind blew past me. This planet was freezing at night but I didn't care since it was like this almost every night. Astrominara is a pretty cold planet to live on since it's pretty far from our sun, Ra. Temperatures usually drop below fifty degrees every night and it gets even worse when Month 1 comes around. The warmest time throughout the year is Month 3 where temperatures reach its highest peak. This is where everyone goes out and enjoys their time on this planet.
Right now, we're at the end of Month 4 where the leaves on trees are starting to change color and fall as well. This month isn't my favorite since I'm not really fit for the cold that this month brings. I really can't blame Astrominara for being cold though because only a few weeks from now, Month 1 is coming and that's where Astrominara's climate really decides to drop. At the beginning of Month 1, all students get a long break from school and all work stops as well since everyone who is living on this planet isn't able to stand the freezing temperatures that drop way below zero. Luckily for us, we have invented heaters in our homes to help keep us warm during this time.
I snapped out of my gaze as I heard someone calling my name from below me. I pushed the upper half of my body off the roof with the help of my arms to look over the waterspout that hung along the edge of the roof. Squinting my eyes, I made out a tall figure that was waving to me from the street. Already knowing who this being was, I blew the hair out of my face in boredom. This being was a tall, lean woman had a turquoise bathrobe wrapped around her body and had pink slippers on her feet. She had gills and fins that shone brightly as Borealis' light reflected off of them. This being is known as the "I will call you thirty times from your room just to ask you to bring me a glass of water" or as we all call her mom.
"Ava! Get down right now!" Jasmine called out to me. "How many times have I told you not to stargaze on the roof? It's dangerous and you could get hurt out here."
"Mom," I said to her as I crawled over to the waterspout, peeking over to get a better view of her. "This is the only best place to get a good view of the sky."
"Girl, get your butt down here. We're about to have dinner soon and there is no way I'm letting you stay out here as me, Addison, and Aiden sit down and eat together," Jasmine declared, crossing her hands. "We are having your favorite tonight as well."
.When mom said that we were having my favorite food tonight for dinner; I was excited to head inside. One thing I love about my mom is her talent for cooking. She gets this talent from her recent job as a head chef. She worked at a five-star restaurant which was owned by the famous Doll Delphinus. Doll is a famous actor who has starred in many of the popular movies like "Asteroid" and "Attack of the Deadly Space Whales." She also has a daughter named Daphne Dorado that goes to school alongside me, but we never really talk since she's basically one of the popular girls.
"Are we having roast beef?" I asked mom, already feeling hungry from the thought.
"There's only one way to find out Ava," Jasmine replied, walking back inside the house.
I crawled over to the corner of the roof to where the spot ran down along the house and slowly made my way down towards the ground. As my feet touched the grass, I sprinted towards the porch and right through the door. I hooked my hand onto the doorframe to help me come to a quick stop so I was able to take off my shoes and close the door before I headed into the dining room. Upon walking into the dining room, I see my brother and sister fighting for the chair near mom again. With their arguing, I feel like they could wake up the whole neighborhood. The fighting came to an end once mom placed the food on the table. Aiden sat next to me with his hands crossed over his chest since he didn't have a choice but to sit across from mom.
Aiden and Addison are mama's kids since mom loves to spoil them as much as she could. I gave them the nickname "spoiled guppies" just to tease them and I love watching them argue about it as I find it entertaining sometimes. Apart from them being spoiled, Addison and Aiden don't get along with one another. You can easily compare them to an old married couple since all they do is argue about every little thing that the other does wrong. These two are basically inseparable and I'm not kidding when I say that. Addison and Aiden were born conjoined at the leg which makes it hard for them to live separate lives. I try to keep them both happy because I feel like it's the best thing I could do as a big sister. Mom is trying to help out too by trying to appoint an operation for them that could help them live separate from each other, but sadly she is unemployed and doesn't earn enough for our wants. She only has enough to pay for the basic needs of our survival and whatever bills she needs to pay. This all happened after Month 1 came right around the corner. Every social place has been closed and only the essentials are open to the public like schools and supermarkets. Once Month 2 begins, we will be everything will go back to the way it was until the next Month 1 comes around.
"That's not fair Addison! It's my turn to sit next to mom!" Aiden complained, peeking over his shoulder to stare at his sister who was eating away at her roast beef.
"You sat next to mom yesterday so it's my turn to sit next to her!" Addison said, putting her fork down. "Besides, you get to sit next to big sister Ava. She is the best big sister ever and I'm jealous."
"How about we switch seats then?" Aiden growled. "You can sit next to big sis Ava and I can sit next to mom."
"Aiden and Addison, what have I said about arguing at the table? This is where we sit down and eat peacefully," Jasmine said to the two of them. "We are a family and we should at least act like one at the table."
"Mom, are you saying we don't act like a family around here?" I asked her as I stabbed my fork into the roast beef.
"All of us don't really spend time with each other except for those two buttheads, but they can't help it and they always fight with one another so I don't see any bonding happening there," Jasmine said, taking a bite of the roast beef in front of her. "In addition, you are busy on the roof all day or out with your friends while I'm out trying to find a temporary job before Month 1 comes so I can make some money to support the three of you."
"I can't argue with that," I sighed. "We don't really spend time with each other at all. With month 1 coming this way soon, we're gonna be in this house for a good hundred and five days. We won't be able to leave the house at all without the risk of becoming a fish popsicles."
"Ava, were you able to find out which species you are yet?" Aiden asked me, looking up from his food. "You're already in Expert School and you still haven't figured out what you are. I feel like you may be a Hercules or even a Perseus since you aren't showing any signs of scales or fur."
"Perseus has wings you Dimbo," Addison said, pushing her plate aside as she finished her dinner.
Astrominara is filled with many different creatures, but one well-known organism that lives here is called Constellations or Consta-beings for short. From the very start of time, life on this planet started out from single bacteria that have evolved into more complex creatures from there. There were winged horses known as Pegasus, large flying reptiles known as Dracos, colorful birds that loved to dance called Apus, and so many more creatures. As time went on, all these animals began to grow smarter about their environment, and their bodies adapted to this, changing them into something completely different from their normal species. Every creature part of the Constellation species came together as one and now lives in peace here on Astrominara. Everyone looks different from one another, but we are counted as equal no matter what the species.
Now about me, I'm not sure what kind of Constellation I could be. I don't possess any physical characteristics like fur, feathers, or scales anywhere on me. I was born without anything that could resemble me to a Constellation. In my opinion, I feel like this could be a genetic mutation of some sort that could be stopping me from gaining these parts. This mutation has gotten me into some trouble at school with the older kids. In school, I'm known as the naked Constellation since I don't possess the characteristics of any Constellation. Many kids have thought of me being a Hercules, but I don't have any traits that could prove that observation. From what I could tell, I won't be finding out any sooner.
"I'm not sure when I will begin to sprout my traits Aiden," I said as I stared at my plate, not feeling hungry anymore. "I feel like I may have some genetic mutation where I'm not able to grow any physical characteristics at all."
"Ava baby, I wish I was able to bring you to the doctor's office to get a blood test or even have you checked out, but we just can't afford it at the moment," Jasmine sighed. "I really want you all to be happy, but we just don't have the expenses to do so just yet. Once Month 2 hits, I promise to try my best to make you three happy."
"Mom, thank you, but we're all happy just being here with each other," I said, trying to cheer her up. "We'll take care of all that once Month 2 comes. Right now, let's just head to bed and get warm underneath the blankets. I'll put my food away in the fridge for lunch tomorrow at school and I'll clean up the kitchen since it's my turn tonight."
"Just head to bed whenever you could since you have school in the morning," Jasmine yawned. "Wrap my food up for tomorrow as well. I wasn't able to finish it since roast beef is really filling."
And with that, Jasmine left the dining room and made her way into her bedroom. The twins also made their way towards our room since they were both tired after the big meal. I share a room with the Pisces twins since we our house only has double bedrooms.
As I made my way over to the table, I stacked the dishes and walked over towards the sink, placing them neatly into it. I turned on the warm water and began to wash the dishes one by one. I enjoyed cleaning as it helped to keep me calm and also made me tired as well. Once I finished cleaning, I made my way over to my room and entered it to see the twins asleep on the bottom bunk together. I climbed up the ladder and lay in the top bunk, staring out the window at the night sky. Thoughts started to fill my head again and my eyes grew heavy. Slowly, they began to close until my thoughts had turned into dreams and I had finally fallen asleep.
