chapter 16
Aureole
It's all or nothing. My friends are just in the room next to me, I'm not alone. Friends... Is that what they were? Or just temporary allies. I didn't know anymore, everyone seemed to have their own way of handling stuff even if there wasn't really time for that. First day remembering life, and I'm already regretting it...
So I just have to give it all I had before I broke down. I ran at the speed of the wind except there was just one minor fault in this plan... I didn't expect to trip and fall on my face. Great. What could go wrong, right?
Yeah, the monster came at me instead, and I ended up getting pinned to the floor, the skin on my back burning. I was done for, I really was going to die. There was no one here, no one to hear me, I didn't want Volt to leave Kera alone, either. I swallowed down my scream and my vision blurred. I couldn't stop my whole second scream, it came more like a scream of frustration or anger. That's right. I still had some fight left. I kicked my leg back, but I didn't seem to get him. So I tried again. Yeah the pain was literally blinding, but what else do I do? Cry my head off? I wish...
I kept missing with every swing, and my energy was being used up as I slowly started to lose consciousness. I heard some words but the rest wasn't clear to me. The pain had stopped growing, but it was still there. My scapulas feeling like they were burning. Then everything went black.
It was a dreamless sleep, luckily there wasn't anything like the last dream I had. I could notice voices talking and going but I couldn't make sense of them.
I think I was being treated, but it really hurt, and the back of my throat itched for water.
I heard a lot of yelling in the background too, and I didn't understand why people couldn't let me sleep in peace, quite honestly. "Insert them here," I heard. I ripping pain started in my back. I was too tired to scream, my throat was too dry to scream, nothing made enough sense to scream.
Insert what? What were they doing to me? Why did it hurt so much? "Hurry up and get the wings, idiots," I heard the voice of a lady, then a bunch of people started murmuring. "Headmistress," a lot of people said.
By this time I was able to gather my senses and I was listening intently. Headmistress? Like the one in the painting? What would she want to be doing here?
"Now, all you better work hard at not damaging those wings before they get tested. Hurt her all you want, but I don't even a feather on those to be touched."
My chest tightened at the sound of getting hurt more, but I felt like I wasn't supposed to be awake right now, so I kept sleeping.
"But Madame-"
"Are you planning to go against my word, Fortre?" the voice sneered. Wow this person is annoying. Can she shut up?
"Madame, why do you want wings implanted in...?"
"Oh, that? To just twist things up a bit. I don't want this little one to die so soon anyways. She might even be the one graduating. Wings are just for the angelic look, and also, they go well with air don't they?"
Being the one that graduates? You mean killing someone? No... And what did she mean about air? Too many questions, too little answers.
I was really tempted to open my eyes but that would most likely stop the conversation.
"Isn't this going a bit overboard, Madame?" A voice from behind me came. What startled me was that the voice was familiar, but I couldn't place it. It was a soft, mature woman's voice, and I kept trying to remember where I heard it before.
"There you are, little dark queen, you did well," she said, and I was starting to think that this other voice was one of the monsters I've faced, maybe even the one that possessed Altair. "You're next job? I'll assign it to you soon enough but first there's other business I need to attend to."
I heard footsteps walk towards me, heavy and almost with a sound of dignity. "You can't fool me that easily my darling little... Child. You're breathing isn't in the same pattern anymore. You've been listening to the whole conversation."
There was an unsettlement in the room which caused me to panic. I was found. What punishments was I going to have?
"How dare-"
"Shush, Fortre, this works perfectly. No I don't need to explain the wing thing again, it's saving time."
I heard heels click away, and I opened my eyes only to be alone. Maybe it was a dream? I tried to sit up but my let out a stabbing pain and I fell back down same amounts of pain still going through me. I ran my hand over my back to make sure and I couldn't feel anything, so I sighed in relief falling back asleep.
