Nagisa Shiota x Reader - The Baseball
Warning - Moments of self-doubt in the middle!!!!! But it is a very cute story :)
How does one describe someone like Class 3-E's brightest and most promising student, Nagisa Shiota? He was thought to be the most innocent kid in the entire E Class, but you were his best friend. You knew better than that.
Nagisa was good at controlling his emotions. It was hard for a regular person to analyze his every move to determine his actual mood. But, you could.
However, sometimes even you couldn't figure out the mystery that was Nagisa Shiota.
----------------------------------------------------------
You were sitting under a shady tree during one of your breaks when Nagisa approached you slowly, baseball in hand.
It was a strange sight; Nagisa had never shown any interest in sports before, especially baseball.
"What's with the ball?" you asked, a lazy smile falling on your face as you continued to twiddle your thumbs.
"I need your help with something," he sounded panicked, yet uncertain at the same time. Already, a red flag went off in your mind.
He had never done that before.
"With?" you asked, cocking an eyebrow at him.
"I want to ask out Kayano-chan," he stated as confidently as he could, although you could still hear the uncertainty laced in his voice.
You choked on your spit once you heard the news. Nagisa had never shown an interest in the green-haired child before, and you were counting on it staying that way.
You had a small - and by small, you meant major - crush on the bluenette that stood before you. You were childhood friends; it was only a matter of time before the hormones kicked in and sparked an interest that wasn't there before.
"O-oh..." you stuttered out as you felt your heart shatter, "Is that what the ball is for?"
"Yes, she was obsessed with Sugino-kun after the baseball match between the A Class and us. So, I figured I could write something on it to impress her. I-is that a good idea?" he fiddled nervously, and you could see beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
"Nagisa-kun, sit down, you're going to pass out from heat stroke or something!" you urged, patting the spot next to you.
He sat down, pulling a Sharpie out of his back pocket. "I h-have an idea, but I-I wanted to check with you first," he continued to sweat and stutter, and you noticed he started to shake. Nagisa was shaking!
"Nagi-kun! Relax! Why are you so shaky all of a sudden?" you nagged, pulling him into a hug as you tried to comfort the startled bluenette.
"I-I don't want to mess this up for me..." he breathed nervously, attempting to calm himself.
"And I won't let you," you promised, rubbing his back reassuringly. You continued until you felt his tense muscles relax and still under your soothing touch.
Finally, he calmed down, his eyes drooping closed after his near panic attack.
"Ready to get to work, tiger?" you asked to an almost unconscious Nagisa. All you received was a loud snore. You giggled as you began to play with his hair, leaning against the tree. "Okay, Nagi-chan, you get some sleep."
----------------------------------------------
Finally, by the last period of the day, Nagisa had a plan. He was ready to put it into action.
He took the baseball and wrote "I may strike out, but would you be my catch? - Nagisa". You knew he had done a good job; any girl would have loved to receive that ball. You just wished he would give it to you and not her.
Nagisa sat next to the green-haired girl in question all day. As you walked in from your final break, you saw the ball sitting on her desk.
It broke your heart to see it on that desk rather than your own. You wanted so badly to claim the bluenette for your own, but Nagisa had chosen the peppy girl he had only met this year.
And why should he not? He had been with you through every awkward phase of your life! Every pimple, every period, every mood swing, every roll of fat! He was there. No wonder he would come to love the girl he had just met.
You watched as Kayano walked in, eyeing the ball on her desk suspiciously. You couldn't blame her; when you learn in an assassination classroom, you become wary of unusual things, especially things that randomly appear on desks.
"What's this?" she asked to no one in particular, eyeing the ball like it was a bomb that could explode at any second. But when Karma Akabane's in your class, that's not as far-fetched as it seems.
Nagisa sat in silence, biting his lip nervously as he watched for her reaction. She slowly picked up the ball, turning it around and around as she scrutinized it before noticing the written words.
And then she gasped.
With teary eyes and the biggest smile you had ever seen on this girl, she turned to your Nagisa.
"Oh my gosh, this is so sweet! I would love to go out with you!" she enthused, running over to Nagisa and encasing him in a bone-crushing hug.
The class oohed and ahhed while Nagisa turned the color of his best friend, Karma's, hair.
You giggled at the sight, trying to ignore the aching in your chest as you watched your best friend celebrate his victory with his new girl.
But he still seemed uncertain.
------------------------------------------------
The next morning, you walked to school with Nagisa, the same as you had every morning for as long as you could remember. Heck, you even met up with him on weekends and throughout the summer.
But this morning was different.
Nagisa was quiet. Dangerously quiet. Normally, he was always cheerful, cracking jokes even on his worst days. But today, not one word was uttered from the bluenette. He didn't even acknowledge your presence.
"Nagi-chan?" you called him by his nickname, "What's wrong?"
"...Kayano..." was all he said.
"What?! What happened?!" you exclaimed concernedly, although you couldn't help the pleasant tingling that spread through your body as you anticipated the worst.
"...She told me she only said yes because there were so many people watching..." he explained quietly, almost embarrassedly.
You gasped. "That's awful! That is so cruel! I can't believe she would do something so mean to you! That was one of the sweetest things a guy could do for a girl, and she took it for granted! If I see her today, I'm gonna show her how we do things-" you mouthed off, your voice filling with slang when Nagisa cut you off.
"(Y/N)-chan! Don't do anything you might regret! She's not even worse it, I have always liked you!" he yelled, stopping in his tracks. "And I didn't talk to you this morning because if I did then I was going to confess and I just couldn't risk-" he rambled on.
You couldn't believe your ears. "Y-you like me?" you asked out of disbelief, feeling adrenaline course through you. You were so excited that you thought you were going to faint.
He went silent again, looking down at his unmoving feet as he prayed for death.
"N-nevermind, forget what I said," he stuttered out, pushing past you as he tried to escape.
"Wait!" you called before stopping him once again.
"What...? Are you going to make fun of me too?" he asked, looking at you with the same expression a wounded puppy would.
"Not at all! Nagi-chan, I like you too!" you expressed as genuinely as you could.
"Don't lie to me, (Y/N)-chan," he sighed in defeat.
"I'm not lying!"
"You had no problem watching me ask out Kayano, heck, you even helped me plan everything! Don't spare my feelings," he spat before continuing the trek to school.
"But you don't realize how much that hurt, Nagi-chan! I loved you, but you could only see her! How beautiful and smart she was! But you didn't see me. What was I supposed to do? I wasn't going to fight only to lose! I am your best friend first! I wanted you to be happy, even if that meant you weren't with me," you explained, passion lacing your every word.
"R-really?" Nagisa asked, his face filling with dread and guilt.
"Yes. I would never lie to you, Nagi-chan," you sighed, "Don't give me that look."
"But I hurt you...All because I was trying to get over you..." he mumbled under his breath.
"You're just a guy, of course, you'd do something stupid," you teased as you reached down and intertwined your fingers with his.
He sighed, a light blush falling on his face as he admired your hands. "I love you, (Y/N)-chan."
~Epilogue~
The two of you walked through the door of Class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High, hand in hand.
"Yeah, I said yes when he asked me at school, but I said no later!" you heard Kayano brag over the phone in the back of the classroom. The whole class, even including Ritsu, shot her disgusted glares.
You felt Nagisa pause, looking down sadly as he tried to ignore the humiliating sympathetic looks from his horrified classmates.
And you were going to do something about it.
As soon as she saw the two of you holding hands, her attention locked onto you. She even hung up on the person she was talking to just to watch.
You smirked. It was now or never.
You grabbed Nagisa's face, turning his head, so he was facing you before slamming your lips against his.
He was startled by your sudden actions, but he didn't complain. He responded by pulling you closer despite the audience of his classmates. He had been dreaming about this moment for a while now; there was no way he was giving it up now.
Once you had heard enough of the wolf whistles from Karma and Teresaka in the back of the room, you pulled away. You saw that Kayano was red with anger, and you sent an evil, almost bone-chilling smirk in her direction.
But unfortunately, the bell rang, and Korosensei showed up for class. You guys made your way to your seats, but you had a quick stop to make.
"I hear that you think hurting my Nagi-chan is funny, Kayano, don't you?" you smirked, leaning on her desk.
"Why do you care?" she spat, acting as if she hadn't seen the show you had put on only a few moments before.
"Because I'm his best friend, and that comes before everything even our relationship. I'm doing this as his friends, not his girlfriend."
With that, you punched her square in the jaw.
She yelped in pain as you strutted confidently over to your desk.
"Korosensei! She punched me!" Kayano whined as she held her bruising jaw.
"If you can't dodge a punch as slow as that, you have no chance of killing me," Korosensei smirked, "Plus, I think you were well-deserving of that."
You left the school that day with a grin plastered on your face and your new man on your arm.
