Karma Akabane x Reader - Rejecting to Save
It was no question that Class 3-E's most experienced juvenile delinquent was none other than Karma Akabane. Karma knew every trick in the book to get away with whatever evil scheme he had concocted. And boy, did he have some crazy ideas now and then.
But there was also no question about how many dangerous situations he got himself into because of his thirst for trouble. Danger seemed to follow him everywhere he went. He was attacked by a rabid group of high school delinquents, foiled an abduction, and participated in hundreds of assassination attempts - both willingly and unwillingly.
You found the troublemaker attractive since the moment they transferred you to the E Class in the middle of your third year. But, because of his well-known reputation, you vowed to avoid him.
At first, you completely ignored the redhead. But, after a little pestering, you figured that you could at least be his friend. There was no harm in being his friend, right?
Boy, were you wrong.
Your little friendship only blossomed, and it wasn't long before you found yourself falling in love with the school's certified bad boy.
But it was just a crush, right? Everything would go back to normal after a while, right?
Wrong again.
If anything, the attraction between the two of you only grew stronger. It hung around you two like a thick mist of fog, and it got so intense that you believed that even Karma could sense it. But still, you tried your hardest to act natural and ignore it. You would get used to the intensity after a while, right?
Wrong again.
It shocked you every time you saw him. You tried every day to act normal. You worked every day to ignore your growing feelings toward him. Every day you felt like you were going to explode with your love for the unsuspecting boy.
But one day, everything changed.
-------------------------------------------------
You walked into the empty classroom. The morning had been unusually cold, with autumn breezes chilling you uncomfortably. You left your jacket at home in a rush to get out of the house this morning. You prayed that you could borrow Karma's jacket when he arrived. He never seemed to get cold.
'Just because I'm cold,' you reasoned with yourself, 'No other reason.'
But you knew the reality of it. You loved wearing Karma's jacket. It was three sizes too big and encased you entirely, not to mention it smelled exactly like him. It was like getting a never-ending hug from your favorite ginger.
After a while, the redhead finally stumbled into the room. He had started arriving earlier so that he could hang out with you and discuss plans for future assassination attempts.
'Strictly business,' you told yourself, 'There are no feelings involved.'
But to Karma, it was more than "just business." He had grown quite fond of you in the short time you knew each other. It was evident to everyone that this was the case. They knew that not even the promise of killing the unkillable Korosensei could arouse Karma from his nightly slumber, yet the idea of talking to you for a few extra moments got him to school almost twenty minutes earlier than everyone else.
You were naive.
When Karma walked in, you noticed that he kept his eyes trained on the floor in front of him. He acted as though he were examining a pattern you couldn't see. It was peculiar; he was silent as he marched to his seat.
"Ne, Karma-kun, can I borrow your jacket?" you asked as you watched him peel the thick black layer off of him, revealing toned arms underneath.
Why was he talking off his jacket when it was freezing even inside the classroom? Because he was going to prove to Nagisa that he was stronger than the weather. The cold never bothered him anyway.
Tsk. He sounded like Elsa and Itona mixed into one.
But, he responded with nothing except the deafening sound of silence. Karma draped his useless jacket on the back of his chair and sat down, a cold stare resting on his face.
"Karma? Are you okay?" you asked as you worried about the scary redhead in front of you.
Nothing.
A breeze sent through the air vent sent a chill down your spine, racking your body with shivers.
You saw Karma look at you, concern washing over his face for one second before he hardened into his original glare.
"Karma, please, can I-"
Karma's head shot up so fast with a glare so frightening that you squealed as you jumped back a few feet. He was scarier looking than any other time you had seen him, and you had seen him at his very worst.
You quickly turned away, burying your face in your arms as you tried to ignore what had just happened.
Soon, more kids began to enter the classroom, confusion marking their faces as they wondered why the two of you hadn't been talking before their arrival. You stayed hidden from them as you tried to steady yourself.
Karma Akabane, your best friend, was angry at you for something. But with a look like that, you knew it was something worse than anger.
Your crush hated you.
More and more of your friends walked over to you, shaking your upset form as they harassed you for details.
"What's wrong, (Y/N)-chan?" your friend, Nagisa Shiota, asked.
"Hm?" you mumbled as sleepily as you could manage as you pretended to wake up.
"Karma seems upset. Did something happen to you two before we got here?" Nagisa asked, his face forming into one of confusion and awkwardness.
You shook your head. You had no idea what had put him in such a foul mood before he arrived or why he was taking it out on you, so you did what you did best; you lied.
"No, I don't know what happened. I was going to rest my eyes while I waited for Karma to show up, but I must've fallen asleep. Why don't you asked him if you're so worried about it?" you suggested as kindly as you could manage.
"He won't answer us. He just keeps his eyes locked on you. We figured you would know," Nagisa explained, his eyes darting nervously between you and the irate redhead in question.
"I'm sorry, I can't be of any more assistance then," you spoke curtly, turning to pull a notebook out of your bag as you ended the conversation.
You loved writing and drawing whenever you could. You wrote short stories and fanfiction to publish on a blog that you ran and drew pictures for you and your family. You even sold drawings to your classmates whenever they wanted one, whether just to have it or to give as a gift to someone else.
But you always gave Karma one for free.
Karma loved seeing your drawings and reading your stories. Whenever you drew, he found himself mesmerized by the movements of your pencil. He also followed your blog, and whenever he knew that you were about to post a story, he would bug you endlessly until you have him an early edition. He always responded with endless praise for both hobbies.
But not today.
Today, you made it a point to avoid everyone in your class, even Korosensei himself. You refused to answer anyone and kept solely focused on the new story you were crafting.
Eventually, people knew that you weren't in the mood to talk. Usually, Karma wouldn't have left you alone until you became yourself again, but not this time.
Finally, it was time for a break. You rushed to your favorite tree and sat in its shade as you continued writing.
After a while, you caught a case of Writer's Block. So, why you waited for it to cure itself, you figured you would see what your classmates were doing.
You saw Teresaka and his friends wasting time in the field, while Sugino discussed baseball strategies with Isogai and Maehara. You saw Itona and Nagisa laughing at something, but you couldn't see what. Until Itona moved.
And there you saw Karma, laughing and smiling as he acted as nothing had happened. The old Karma was back. Where he had been, you didn't know.
But he never once looked in your direction. You watched the group, trying to pick up on what was going on. You wondered what had made Karma so angry this morning.
A breeze went through the air, and the sun went behind the clouds, chilling the atmosphere around you. You remembered that you forgot your jacket this morning. Goosebumps formed on your arms, causing you to wrap your arms around yourself as you tried to generate some heat.
You didn't want to ask Karma for his jacket again. But, you noticed that Nagisa had his jacket tied around his hips. Bingo.
You walked over to the three males before tapping Nagisa lightly on the shoulder. At this point, you were shivering, and your teeth were chattering.
"Hey, (Y/N)-chan!" Nagisa greeted you cheerfully before noticing how cold you were, "(Y/N)-chan! You're freezing!"
"C-can I borrow y-your j-j-jacket, Nagi-kun?" you stuttered.
"Of course!" he enthused, quickly wrapping his jacket around you, "You're going to get a cold running around like that," he nagged.
"Yeah, yeah," you rolled your eyes playfully as you warmed yourself up. You saw a flicker of hurt flash through Karma's eyes, but you didn't understand why,
"You're a real piece of work, aren't you?" Karma growled as Nagisa hugged you to share body heat.
"W-what?" you asked, confusion showing in your eyes.
"You forgot your jacket this morning, probably leaving it somewhere like your chair or the hook. So, first you bug me for my jacket, and when I said no, you pouted until Nagisa gave you his. Honestly, it's pathetic," he spat.
Everyone went silent. Karma never yelled at you, even when you yelled at him first. He refused to. But no one knew what to think.
"W-what-"
"You heard me. I said you're pathetic. Open your ears when someone is speaking to you," he snapped. He sounded exactly like your disappointed parents.
"Karma, hush, she's done nothing wrong-"
"Stay out of this, Nagisa!"
"Karma-"
"Don't you start either, Itona! This is between her and me!"
You couldn't take any more of his hateful yelling. You ripped off Nagisa's jacket and slammed it into Karma's chest before you ran back to the classroom with tears falling down your face.
What did you do to deserve this?
Karma's POV:
Dammit, Karma! Why am I so stupid? Not only did I yell at the love of my life, but I made her cry, too!
Yes, that's right. I, Karma Akabane, love (Y/N) (L/N). Not a day goes by that I don't think about her.
So why would I be so mean to her, you may ask? Because of how dangerous I am.
I am a professional juvenile delinquent. Trouble follows me like white on rice. Some of the worst criminals in history target me daily.
I could never let anything happen to her.
Being with her would make her an even more significant target than I am. People would kidnap her, torture her, or worse. But if she doesn't matter to me, she won't matter to anyone else.
So, I yelled at her the same way her parents did. It hurt seeing her like that, but I had to do it.
As long as she's safe, it's worth any amount of pain.
(Y/N)'s POV:
You sat outside the classroom with your face stuck in between your knees as you sobbed to your heart's content. The teachers were outside watching the other kids, leaving you to the privacy of the empty hallway.
That is until someone's hand clasped itself over your mouth.
The only person who would ever do something like that to you was Karma, but Karma was still outside. This person's hand was as cold as ice and rough with callouses, unlike Karma's hand, which was baby soft and warm. The stranger smelled awful as if it had been weeks since he last showered, versus Karma's combined smell of cologne and strawberries. You could feel your captor's beer belly push into your back.
"Now listen here, girl, you're going to do exactly as I say, when I say it," a gruff yet familiar voice growled, "Or it will be exactly like the last time you disobeyed me."
You gasped audibly when you figured out who your captor was: your old teacher, Takaoka-sensei!
He roughly yanked you up, his hands resting on your chest as he threw you into the back of his white van.
You wanted to fight back, but you knew you wouldn't win. You could fight, definitely, but your moves would be too predictable to be successful in this situation. Nagisa won because of his hidden bloodlust, but here, you could hardly disguise your thirst for his blood.
Suddenly, everything went back.
-----------------------------------------------
You woke up tied to a pole with a gag in your mouth. You looked around, realizing that you were on the roof of a towering skyscraper overlooking the city of Tokyo. You groggily noticed the darkness of the skies and the bright lights shining below you.
How long had you been out?
You tried to undo the knot that held your wrists captive but to no avail. You struggled endlessly before hearing voiced from below.
"Here, she's in here! Dammit, why did I let this happen to her?" you heard the worried shout of the person you least expected, Karma Akabane.
Why was he here? He didn't care about you. He made that much clear.
Or did he?
The door that leads to the roof burst open, and out poured in the highest-ranking members of the E Class; Nagisa, Isogai, Maehara, Nakamura, Kayano, Sugino, Itona, and the red-haired devil himself, Karma.
"(Y/N)!" the group of heroes shouted simultaniously as they ran over to you, "Are you okay?"
You mumbled as best as you could with the gag in place. You tried to feel relieved, but you had an awful feeling in your stomach that something horrible was about to happen.
Surprisingly, Karma was the first one over to you. He ripped the gag out of your mouth, allowing you to breathe the fresh air fully.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly, contradicting his tone from earlier.
"I-I'm fine..J-just sore," you mumbled as memories replayed over and over through your head, "And confused..."
"Why?" he asked as he cocked an eyebrow at you.
"Why are you here?" you asked, sounding indignant and rude despite how hard you were trying to be nice.
"Why wouldn't I?" he asked, looking almost hurt. Did he really forget what happened today?
You didn't get a chance to respond. Again, the door to the rood opened, and you prayed that you would see the rest of the E Class, along with Korosensei, Karasuma-sensei, and even Bitch-sensei.
But, alas, it was not meant to be.
Your captor, and also your former teacher, Takaoka-sensei, burst through the door, an animalistic snarl ripping through his throat, and he even seemed to be foaming at the mouth as his eyes locked on the cluster of people surrounding you.
"Ah, Akabane Karma-kun has finally shown up to reclaim his prize," the insane military leader taunted, "Right on time, too."
The group turned to look at Karma in synchronization as they demanded answers to the millions of questions running through their heads. Karma, however, seemed horrified.
"What do you want, Takaoka?" the redhead growled, standing protectively in front of the group. He looked as angry as he had when he and Nagisa had a war. But this time, there would be no one to stop his rampage.
"What I want," Takaoka paused dramatically, "Is to know what happened to the rest of the E Class, especially Korosensei! They're going to miss the show! I had a wonderful grand finale planned too!"
"You leave her out of this!" Karma snarled. Your face scrunched up in confusion. What was your role in this?
"No can do," the deranged teacher sneered, "You brought her into this yourself, Akabane."
"What is he talking about, Karma-kun?" you heard Nagisa's soft voice speak up.
"Ah, you've brought Nagisa with you, too! Hey, (Y/N)'s your best friend, isn't she? It seems I've really hit the jackpot!" Takaoka smirked triumphantly.
"What's going on?" Isogai shouted annoyedly, his eyes flashing between the two horrified boys.
"He wants revenge on Nagisa and me," Karma sighed, rolling his eyes as if it was apparent as he tried to act cool. But on the inside, Karma was freaking out. His worst fear had become a reality.
"Exactly," Takaoka smirked.
"But why Karma...?" Kayano spoke up.
"Because Karma turned (Y/N) against me when I became your teacher, after who was it... Kanzaki-chan, was beaten to the ground? Being the leader of the class, her defiance sparked a rebellion in the rest of them. Karma started this, and Nagisa finished it. Since she was such an integral part of my downfall and is of such great importance to you both, what with her being Nagisa's best friend and Karma's girlfriend, taking her out seemed like the best solution," the evil teacher sneered as he approached the group while brandishing a knife.
His girlfriend? What did that mean?
"Step closer to her with that knife, and you'll regret this day worse than the day we booted you from our school," Karma threatened, his eyes darkeningly frighteningly.
"Oh, will I? I could just as easily throw this knife at her and still hit her heart or neck. She'll just suffer more that way-- oh wait, let's do exactly that!" the madman shouted before releasing his grip on the knife.
The knife zoomed towards you. You closed your eyes as you waited for the impact and the pain, but surprisingly, it never came.
After hearing the loud gasps and squeals of your horrified classmates, you looked up to see Karma holding the blade of the knife inches away from his own chest.
"My reflexes are better than you think," Karma smirked as he pocketed the knife, "You're too slow. I'm sure even Okuda-chan could throw her knife faster than you can, and more accurately! Heck, if I had let this go, you would've hit the board above her shoulder! I'm ashamed, sensei, I thought you were better than this."
'Oh no,' you thought, 'He's planning another assassination attempt.'
Before Karma could kill his victim, he loved to destroy what they found dearest to their heart. For Korosensei, it was his identity as a teacher. For Takaoka-sensei, it was his military expertise and top-notch combat skills. Karma was egging him on.
Takaoka growled. "Your girl will pay for this!"
An ear-splitting screech erupted from your mouth. Takaoka had thrown another knife, and before Karma could react, the knife lodged itself into your left side.
Karma gasped and turned his attention to you, failing to realize the offensive position Takaoka took up behind you. The rest of the group, however, noticed and ran to attack.
Before Takaoka could release his knife, he suddenly collapsed to the ground and on top of a pile of rubble. Dust flew into the air, obscuring the group's vision and causing you to choke.
It took a few seconds for your vision to clear. Once the dust clouds were gone, you saw Teresaka holding his excellent stun gun, with the rest of the E Class behind him.
You sighed out of relief. "Way to go, Teresaka-kun!" you cheered.
Not even a second had passed before you felt Karma behind you, freeing your limbs from the bondage.
You rubbed your sore wrists once you could move again. However, it didn't last long, because Karma immediately pulled you into a big hug. You yelped at the sudden gesture and the pain in your side.
"K-Karma-kun..."
He cut you off by slamming his lips into yours. His hands flew to the back of your head, tangling his hands in your soft (H/C) hair.
Your eyes widened from the surprise of the kiss. You couldn't believe that your crush was kissing you, and even though you wanted to remember the jerk that Karma was this morning, you couldn't help but kiss back.
In that moment, you completely forgot about your surroundings. No longer were you standing on a rooftop overlooking the city after being kidnapped by your psychotic teacher. You weren't bleeding anymore. You were with Karma. You didn't mind anything else.
"(Y/N)-chan, you're bleeding!" Nagisa pointed out.
Everyone gasped, except for Korosensei. Korosensei rushed over, fixing you up before anyone could even realize what was happening. But by the time he finished, your side was bandaged.
"I refuse to let anyone of you kids get hurt," he spoke seriously, "The knife missed everything important. You will be fine."
It was good to see him and the rest of your class again.
~Time Skip~
You were walking back to your house, with Karma walking next to you in awkward silence. But one thing had been bugging you.
Why did Takaoka think you were Karma's girlfriend?
"Hey, Karma...?" you quietly spoke, afraid of irritating him as you had earlier.
"Hm?" he hummed as he seemed lost in his own world.
"What did Takaoka mean when he said that I was your girlfriend?" you mumbled so quietly that you didn't think that he could hear you.
He sighed. "I like, no, I love you, (Y/N). I always have, and I always will."
"W-what?" you gasped.
"I love you. D-don't you love m-me back?" he stuttered as panic and anxiety washed over him.
"Of course I do! But, you hated me this morning..." you trailed off as you rubbed your arm awkwardly.
"I only did that because I was afraid that something like tonight would happen. You know how dangerous I can be. I didn't want someone using you for leverage. But I guess it happened anyways," the redhead cringed at the thought.
"I'm fine-"
"Don't give me that bullcrap. You got stabbed to make me regret what I had done in the past. Don't you dare tell me that you're fine!" he exploded. By now the two of you had reached your front door.
You silenced him with a kiss of your own. He didn't oppose as he kissed back immediately, pouring his apologies into the kiss.
But it ended too quickly. You pulled back teasingly, smiling evilly at the bad boy.
"I forgive you."
With that, you turned on your heel before entering your house, leaving Karma standing dumbfounded on the front porch, his hand just barely ghosting over his lips where you performed magic.
"Good night, (Y/N)..."
