Pirates beware

~ June 1719 ~

Grace sighed as she stared at the sea, seeing how the waves folded and unfolded beneath the ship. Her fingers played with her mother's necklace that was hanging around her neck. It was the only thing she had left from her parents, from her "lost life", she usually called it.

"So what do I do, just lay this down there?"

Grace heard the man talking outside the locked door of the cabin. She rolled her eyes and looked back at the sea. It seemed to be the only thing that she could do.

"Yes, f'course."

"Isn't she dangerous then?!"

"I don't bloody know, all I know is that we need to transport her back to the boss, you don't want to dissapoint him."

"What's so bloody important about her that she needs to be transported?!"

"Do I look like I know?"

Grace heard the men continue to argue for the next five minutes before finally one entered with the food she had been waiting for.

Taking one longing look outside, Grace knew she couldn't possibly escape. Because firstly they were on a ship and secondly: where would she go? They were possibly now in the middle of the great sea with no islands or any form of civilization near. She's stuck here, stuck in this life.

The door shut again, stopping Grace's day dream. Normally she would always make stories in her head about how her life would've been if they hadn't come looking for her that day. There had been days when Grace would blame her parents for what had happened.

Blaming the dead didn't help much with her situation though.

Now she was stuck here, stuck with him. Ever since that day he had experiented on her. Why her? Grace would always wonder, why did he choose her, why was she one of the only people that survived the experiments? Those were questions that remained unanswered.

To be honest Grace didn't mind being on a ship. It was better than being there, with him. She feared what was coming, what he was going to make her do this time. She always seemed to be in fear, her whole life she had been living in that same state of utter desperation and hopelessness. It had become just as normal as breathing.

"Pirates!!" Someone yelled from the top deck, making Grace jump up in surprise. Her eyes squinted together as she looked up at the wood above her. She listened closely, heard how the ship creaked in the wind and how the waves crashed against the wood.

That's when the cannon fire started. Grace heard the cannon balls hitting the ship, heard the wood moaning and splintering, heard the men's yells on the top deck, their hurried footsteps walking and stamping everywhere. She almost fell backwards due to the shock and let out a yelp, but she regained her balance soon after.

Her breath came out in short raspy puffs as Grace looked around the room frantically, looking for something that might help her. She ran towards the door, pulled on the handle but it wouldn't oblige.

"You've got to be kidding me." Grace groaned and started to bang her body against the door. She wasn't planning on dying on a ship. Another cannon ball hit the ship, this time it went through Grace's room, right where she first stood. She stood frozen for a while, her eyes widening in horror when she realized she could've been a pile of broken bones right then.

"Heave, lads! Let's take her!" Grace heard a man yell from the other ship, his voice booming through the air like an eagle's call.

She didn't know what the hell she was going to do, didn't even know what was happening. Nevertheless she ran towards the new hole in the ship whilst other cannon balls were shot through the air all around her.

When she reached the hole Grace climbed to the top of the deck. She plumped down on the wood, seeing how the pirates now started to board the ship she was on. The wind though distracted her, the feeling of it running through her hair. It was a small taste of freedom, but it was good enough for her to loose her concentration for the task at hand.

Grace saw the chaos, saw the crew being slaughtered by just one man. The men that had captured her had the advantage when it came to numbers, surely, but that guy just crushed their hope with the flick of his sword.

He wore a white hood and some kind of robes that looked strangely familiar. His sea-blue eyes met Grace's green ones after he had killed nearly all of the men on deck. His clothes were soaked with blood and his face was dirty, his eyebrows contracted into a permanent frown. The pirate frowned deeper when he saw a woman, scarcely dressed in only a white gown, standing motionless on the top deck with nothing to defend herself.

Edward knew this was a prisoner ship, but a woman was something he hadn't expected. Especially not a woman that could fight, he added in his mind when one of her captors went up to grasp her. She kicked him in one swift motion and then hit him so hard he was sent flying off the ship.

Their eyes locked again. Edward shrugged and smiled at her, seeming impressed. The woman didn't return the favor though, her eyes only widened further when Edward took a step towards her.

It was when a cannon ball hit the ship right next to her that Grace's body was send flying backwards, her body being lunged in the air. Edward's eyes widened when he saw her, his gaze following her body until she hit the raging water.
