As i sit in row 15B i take my hat off my head. I wasnt fast enough to save him, I wasnt quick enough with the bandages. So as a result, we have one less US solider. "Come now, lets hear a round of applause for two soliders coming home. Their returning to their families, they have been away from them for so long. Going to be some flags waveing, and some tear stained faces." The lady over the planes intercom said. The sound of people clapping and some stomping their feet filled the plane. But little did they know who was right below their feet.
"Desmond!" I shout as i run towards him. He looks back as a bullet flys through his shoulder. "ARRRRGAAAH!!" He yells in pain as he falls to the ground. I run towards him and land on my knees. He was shot with a 40 milimeter grenade launcher so the blood loss was extensive. And his arm is 10 feet away. "Y/N I cant feel my arm!" He groaned in pain as i looked over the wound. "Y/N im getting really sleepy." He told me as he began to close his eyes. "Desmond! Desmond no!" I yell as i slap him. "Goodbye Y/N. Do Tell my family, i love them."
"excuse me, ma'am." The soft voice of the flight attendant spoke to me. She snapped me out of my flashback. I looked at her and she gave me a soft smile. "What would you like to drink?" She asked me and i smiled back at her. "Some water would be fine, thanks." I told her and she wrote it down on her notepad and went to the next person. A few minuets later she came back to me with a bag of chex mix and a water bottle. "Here you are. Thank you for your service.." She said and walked off. I closed my eyes with the thoughts of my fallen comrade and the hope of peaceful sleep.
Fire. Gunfire. Smoke. Smoke grenades. Miles. Desmond miles. "Corporal Y/N L/N you are assigned to escort the deceased corpse of Desmond Miles back home to America. His family has already been notified and are awaiting your arrival. Your plane is scheduled to leave at 1800 tonight." Lieutenant Arno Dorian said as he handed me my Plane ticket. "Yes, sir." I said and then i took my leave. This is it, my friend. Hes really dead.
"Excuse me, miss." A male flight attendant said as he touched my shoulder. "We are landing soon and you where crying. I know the reason and my condolences go out to you." He said as he handed me a small pack of tissues and a small smile. "Thank you." I tell him and he walks off. I buckle my seat belt and wipe the tears off my face. Again a female flight attenuates voice came over the intercom saying; "Come on lets hear a round of applause for two soldiers coming home. they are returning to their families. They have been away from them for so long. There is going to be some flags waving and some tear stained faces. Journeys over, two soldiers made it home." And yet again, people clapped and stomped their feet.
I rose as the plane landed to exit early. As I got off i heard the gasps of some people as they realized only one solider was on the plane. One solider that was breathing that is. As i left the plane it hit me harder then ever.
"I want you to promise me something." Desmond said as he turned his head to face me. "What would that be?" I asked him as i looked into his brown eyes. "Promise me we will arrive back on american soil together. " He said and i smiled. "I promise we will." I said.
As i walked down into the cargo bay i watched Desmond's casket be loaded out of the plane. The next day at his funeral i went up to his open casket and placed a rose in his hands. "I kept my promise Dessy. Just, not in the way we expected it to be fulfilled."
