Chapter 27 Evie
"Eve," someone was shaking me gently. "Evie wake up. It's nighttime."
I half expected the gentle sway of a ship rocking on the waves. Instead I felt that my back was sore from sleeping on Edward's roof. I opened my eyes and saw Rook sitting at my side.
She smiled. "Good evening, sister."
I sat up and smiled back at her. "How long does it take to readjust to sleeping at night?"
"I honestly don't know," Rook pushed herself to her feet. "I've never had to go through it, but based on what some of the others say I would guess a couple of days."
"Well then. In that case, I should just not even try. Seeing as we won't be here that long."
"Maybe I should keep you up all day," Rook held out a hand to help me up. "I'm quite good at that. Just ask Moleck. He was moaning and groaning that I wouldn't let him sleep during the day."
I took her hand and she pulled me up. She looked up at the sky, the chain pulled the anchor up. I noticed another pendent hanging around her neck. The anchor glowed slightly, giving me a better view of the other necklace. It was a small dark blue disk with a silver tree spreading it's branches across the whole circle.
The anchor stopped glowing and Rook turned her gaze to me. "I have a couple things for you. One of them is on behalf of The Brotherhood, the other is just from me." She reached into a pouch at her belt. "I also have something to... tell you." She extended her hand to me.
I reached forward and took the two pendents. One was the anchor, the other was just like Rook's tree, only it was dark green. "Does the tree do anything special? Like the anchor?"
Rook looked away. "It... well... it lets you talk to me, and only me. I created it myself."
I took the chain off my neck and put the two pendents on. "Thank you."
As soon as I put the chain back on I could feel a dozen or so little points in the back of my mind. Rook smiled and the tree pendent glowed. Welcome, sister.
I looked at Rook as the tree's glow faded. She cleared her throat. "Now... promise not to kill me?"
I stared at her in shock. "Of course I won't kill you Rook! You're a friend!"
Rook relaxed slightly. "You can't tell anyone what I'm about to tell you. Especially not Henry or Jacob."
"I won't," I promised. "Rook what's wrong?" I placed my hands on her shoulders.
She took a deep breath. "My last name isn't Wold."
I frowned. "Is that so bad?"
"Yes. My last name... is Starrick..."
She refused to meet my eyes. "Rook," I said softly, "being the daughter of my enemy doesn't change anything about you. You're still Rook."
Rook looked up. "I know... but that's not everything."
"Then tell me," I urged. "It's fine."
Rook leaned into me. "I'm sorry Eve. I've helped him! He forced me to! He already has the Shroud of Eden and he's using it a little bit."
I could feel her crying as I rubbed her back. "It's alright Rook. We can stop him, I know we can."
Rook pulled away slowly, not meeting my eyes. "I suppose I could ask Arno if we could use his sword." She seemed a little less nervous, but not by much. She still looked sad.
I tilted my head. "What's so special about Arno's sword?"
Rook looked mildly surprised, she was recovering quickly. "Didn't he tell you where he got it from?"
"He said it was a gift from Elise."
"Hmm," Rook started pacing the roof. "That's only partially true. It was, sort of, a gift from Elise. However, it's a Piece of Eden."
"How do you know?" My curiosity was now full fledged surprise.
Rook smiled. "I made him tell me what happened when he was moping around my base. He didn't want to tell me, but I pestered him until he did."
I laughed. "That sounds like something I would do to Jacob if I knew he wasn't telling me something."
Rook's smile slowly turned into a smirk. "You should pester him sometime. I'm willing to bet there's something he hasn't told you."
"I think you should pester him," I said with a laugh. "If you do it now you might even get him to say something."
Rook's grin grew. "As I recall, he sided with Moleck... I think a little practical joke is in order."
"I believe you're right," I smiled back. "I certainly won't stop you."
Rook started to run off but stopped and looked back. "I'll teach you how to use your new stuff tomorrow!" And then she was gone.
It was amazing how she could disappear as long as there was a shadow around.
I decided that I should find something fun to do. Maybe I could find a certain blue assassin wandering around...

The plot THICKENS! XD I spelled that wrong the first time and auto correct put CHICKENS. I like that a lot better actually. The plot CHICKENS!
What do you think of Evie looking for a certain blue assassin?
No questions, but I'm happy to answer any of them. Especially if they involve one of the following: Evie, Rook, Arno, Jacob, Moleck, or Henry.
May the wind blow strong in your sails!
