Chapter 26 Henry (or Jayadeep)

Edward and Jacob had run off somewhere, Rook had run off before they did, and Evie was nowhere to be found. I sat on the beach with the waves coming close to my feet.

The quiet sound of the waves running over the sand made me feel right at home. The sun was dipping toward the horizon, though it was still a long way from sunset.

   "Enjoying the breeze Jayadeep?"

I turned, expecting to see Moleck but saw Rook instead. She smiled and sat down, adjusting her swords in the sand.

"Yes," I said. She seemed to get calmer and less mischievous as night got closer. "Do you know where Evie is?"

Rook blinked slowly. "She's sleeping on Kenway's roof. I wouldn't worry about her though. It'll take her a couple of days to get used to sleeping at night."

"She was up all night on the Night's Jewel then?"

"Yes. I met her on the deck after the crew changed who was up."

I frowned. "Where you up all night too?"

   "I don't sleep."

I pondered that. I didn't think it was possible to not sleep and still have all of the strength and power that Rook appeared to have. Rook didn't interrupt my thoughts by saying anything. She seemed to be lost in her own world as well.

"Rookie!" I jumped and looked over at Arno who was running across the beach. "Where is everyone?"

Rook rolled her eyes and stood up. "You could have asked the other way."

"I didn't want Edward to hear me," Arno didn't meet her eyes.

"Arno!" Rook laughed and punched his shoulder. "Come on, I'll show you. See you later Henry."

"Be careful. Don't die," I said, smiling.

Rook smirked. "I'm always careful, and I never die."

As they started walking away I heard Arno say, "The first is not true, but the second has yet to be proven."

Rook laughed and started running up the hill.

I turned my attention back to the ocean. I should probably be meeting any other assassins that are here, but I really wasn't sure I wanted to. At the very least I should take a walk. I sighed and pushed myself up. Edward had mentioned there being huts in the woods, maybe I should try to find one.

I followed a trail into the woods. The shade was a nice change from the hot sun. Everything was a vibrant shade of green. The trees were covered in moss and most of them had vines hanging from the branches, but that only added to the mystery of the place where some people would think it was creepy.

There was a low growl from a thick clump of bushes. I backed away nervously. I got the feeling that I didn't want to meet whatever was there.

A large panther stalked out of the bushes. It's yellow eyes glared at me. I backed up a little further, maybe it would leave me alone. It snarled and lunged forward.

"YA!" something dropped from the trees and landed on top of the panther. A man dressed in gold assassin robes stood crouched over his kill. A red bandanna was tied tightly around his hair, holding it up. He stood and brushed the dirt off of his robes.

"Thanks for the save," I said. "I would probably be a bunch of ribbons otherwise."

The man laughed. "It was no trouble. There weren't panthers here until the Spanish dropped a couple off as a... going away present for us," he smiled. "I'm James Kidd. Who might you be?"

"Henry Green," I said, extending a hand to shake.

James took it and shook. "A pleasure Henry. Out for a stroll are ye?"

"Indeed. I couldn't think of anything better to do. If I wasn't walking now I would be sitting on the beach."

James laughed. "Ain't any fun getting sand in your trousers."

I smiled and continued my walk. James fell into step next to me. He didn't say a word as we walked. The silence was welcome.

I stepped into a clearing with a large tree in the center. There was a large platform about halfway up the tree with a house in the middle built around the tree.

"What is that?" I asked circling the tree. "And how do we get up there?"

James smirked. "It's a house. My house, to be precise."

"Your house? Why did you put it in the tree?"

"Figure out how to get up and I'll show you."

There will not be another chapter in The Assassins of Skyrim until the day after tomorrow. I really want Rook and Evie to become better friends so that's what I'm writing tomorrow.

There are no questions but I'm happy to answer any that you have, especially if Rook is concerned!
