Chapter 14 Henry (or Jayadeep Mir)

After spending about an hour with Moleck I started to like him better. He gave more thought to things than Archer and Arno seemed to. He also looked at problems from different angles such as the what-would-happen-if-we-did-it-this-way-instead angle, and the how-would-the-Templars-look-at-it-if-we-did-that angle, and last but not least the how-would-the-Templars-react-to-that angle. It tied my brain in knots with all of the things he suggested, but he was very helpful.

He also knew a surprising amount about what we were doing.

Jacob and Arno returned as I was telling Evie about the Soothing Syrup, since I assumed that was what Jacob was going to be doing. Jacob, much to my surprise, stood in the doorway and listened to what I had to say. "The Soothing Syrup is the only medicine used in Lambeth. It bears the Templar Grand Master's name," I shot a glance at Jacob. "About time for a visit to the doctor."

Jacob didn't say anything, but Evie did. "I don't see the cure arriving any time soon."

That was when Jacob spoke up, sarcasm dripping from his words. "And will you be doing, might I ask?"

Evie glared at him. "You know very well, tracking the Piece of Eden."

"Enjoy your studies," Jacob said with a yawn. "I'll be out killing Templars. Oh and Archer wanted me to give this to you." He held out a thin silver chain to Evie.

Evie took it. She studied it a moment before putting it around her neck. The simple chain suited her. She smiled at me. "Don't stare, Henry," she said teasingly. "It's not polite." She brushed by me and I smiled after her.

Jacob gave an exasperated sigh and left.

"Did I hear something about a Templar Grand Master?" an unfamiliar voice asked. "I don't suppose you mean Torres?"

Where Jacob had been standing a moment before there was a man in worn looking blue assassin robes. The hood was down, revealing dirty blond hair pulled back haphazardly into a ponytail. His ice blue eyes glinted, like he was about to play a practical joke on someone. A crooked smirk rested comfortably on his face as he leaned calmly against the door frame. Torres? This could only be Edward James Kenway. Torres was the Templar Grand Master of the West Indies and Edward's ultimate target.

Edward grinned. "I can't stay long, any officer worth his salt will notice the Jackdaw. I've cleared out the area around there for you and I need to give Evie something. I trust you'll get it to her?" Edward held out an old looking notebook. "I think this could help her on her search."

I took the notebook and flipped through the pages. Drawings of ships, sea birds, and cities that I didn't recognize filled every page except for the last two, which were blank. I looked up at Edward. "What good will this do us?"

He smirked and folded his arms. "That's for me to know, and you to find out. Now, if you'll excuse me, I came here for a reason and now that I've done what I came to do, it's time I went and saved my crew the bother of explaining why there's an old brig docked in the harbor." He pushed off the door and opened the door to outside. A gust of wind blew through and made his unkempt hair even messier. He turned back when he stood at the threshold. "One more thing Mir," he said, eyes now devoid of humor replaced by an intent, penetrating stare. "Be careful when Evie's ready. The lass has got a useful power so long as she can use it." With that, he jumped out the door and the wind seemed to carry him to a nearby rooftop.

The door creaked behind me. Moleck was no longer in the car, but Evie was. She smiled and walked up behind me. "What's that?" she asked, indicating the notebook.

"I don't know," I handed it to her. "Edward said it was for you. He said that it would help us. He also warned me that you have a strong power if you can control it. Do you have any idea what that means?"

Evie flipped through the notebook and shook her head. "No," she adjusted the chain around her neck and sighed, smile gone. "I feel like I've gotten farther from Jacob than I've ever been before. It's like I'm split in half now. He's annoying, but he's my brother... my twin. It feels wrong."

I put a hand on her shoulder. "It'll work out Evie. I promise."

She looked up at me and smiled once more. "Thank you Henry," she said quietly. She pulled away after a moment and set the notebook down gently on a table. "I'm going to see if there's any leads on the Piece of Eden. I'll see you at dinner."

She left with barely a sound. She was quieter than a cat sometimes. That thought made me smile. I'd never been that good at sneaking. I was usually noticed long before I'd even entered the area I was going for. Evie was exactly the opposite.

I picked up the notebook and sat down. I needed some answers and from what Edward had said, I assumed that this notebook had some. It wasn't like I had anything better to do.

Hello everyone! Another chapter down. Let me know what you think of Henry's personality. Something about it seems a bit off, but I don't know what it is.

Again, if you have any questions for any of the characters (even the ones that almost never show up, Blighters, Rooks, etc.) feel free to ask them and I'll answer them as soon as I can.

May the wind blow strong in your sails!

(I almost put Randy Dandy-O at the beginning of this chapter XD)
