Chapter Thirty One

Anakin told Obi-Wan of the information he'd discovered, then showed his former master the corpse-less coffins alone. Based on the facts that there were countless possible culprits all scattered throughout the base and no obvious clues pointing to a single person, it was best if he kept this development strictly between the two of them.

"Why would they take her body?" Obi-Wan asked lowly, calmly, but his words were filled with a quiet rage that shocked the younger man.

"Not just that, Obi-Wan..." Anakin hadn't spoken the matter of Denali's unborn children to the Jedi Council or even Ahsoka since Danik told him that little piece of information before their deaths. Ever since the end, he kept that news safe within himself, locking it away like a secret. He thought at the time that maybe he could've used that information for himself. Not to exploit her memory or anything vile along those lines, but to cherish it like a final knowledge, a fact that only he and he alone knew.

A fact that made him feel like he knew the true Denali during her passing.

Though, as he considered it and let his loyalty to his friend sway his decision, he couldn't hide something so important from Obi-Wan. Although it burned for Anakin to admit it, Obi-Wan was the father of those children and he deserved to know. If the roles had been reversed, he would've wanted his friend to say what needed to be said.

But, as Obi-Wan's enraged eyes turned towards him, a red light shot through Anakin's head and told him to keep his mouth shut. Not just a little voice formed from jealousy or envy like he would've expected, no. It was a voice of reason. A warning. The Force itself clamping an invisible hand over his lips and shutting him up.

"What else is there, Anakin?"

"The effort they put into this heist is disturbing." He lied through his teeth. "I mean, going so far as to replace the bodies with decoys...They were dedicated, that's for sure." Anakin kept his face clear of any other emotion besides disgust, no matter how much that invisible warning flashed in his mind.

Thankfully, Obi-Wan seemed to have bought his fib.

"You're right." He stroked his auburn beard and glared down at the empty coffins. "And I can't seem to sense the culprit, either. No matter how hard I try. Who ever did this didn't want to risk anyone figuring out their identity or the motive behind their actions."

Anakin just nodded in agreement, only glancing over at his mentor to notice the quiet fury of his shaking, clenched fists.

Hey, everyone! I know this is a super short chapter and I apologize for that, but I have something really important to say!

The 2016 Fiction Awards have officially started and nominations have begun. I would definitely appreciate it if you guys nominated this story or any of the previous Assassin books since I've worked so hard on this series over the past few years. What you need to do to nominate this book is go to thefictionawards account, open their book titled 'The Fiction Awards 2016', go to 'Nominations-Open' chapter, then (after reading the instructions in the chapter) comment the title of this book and my username.

Thank you all again for your support and I'd like to thank Sethaso for being the first person to nominate me and, in the act of doing so, letting me know about the contest.

Also, let me know what you think of this new Obi-Wan in the comments. Any predictions as to what might happen between him and the rest of the crew in the future books?? :D Thanks again for reading, everyone! Love you guys!
