Poetry from Our Readers
Sail
On planks of wood,
Floating on a plain,
I see the masts stand tall,
Wind gales billowing its cloudy flames.
The crash of water,
The yells of men,
And the occasional cry of a gull.
I run my fingers over grain,
Of a wooden rail,
Eyes searching,
The hazy horizon of a forgotten perception.
Legs that only know of swaying,
Mind that knows of sails,
Hands that know callouses,
And feet that know nails.
My heart is here,
Upon the sea.
To sail for...
Eternity.
Let us take a moment to gather your opinions on two poetry matters. First, we are considering having a poetry club. This would be casual and would run like our Flash Fiction Fridays. Once a week, a prompt and guidelines for a poetry piece would be published. Poets would then have a week to write, and post a link to, their poem, stating if they are open to critique. If they are, the other poets are encouraged to offer feedback in a constructive, polite way. At the end of the week, readers and poets are encouraged to return to the chapter and vote from the one they like best. Aspire magazine will publish some of these nominated poems on occasion. Leave an inline comment here if you might be interested in a club like this!
Second, we are also considering a poetry-only contest. Participants would submit a single poem (up to three in different areas) and then it would be run just like any other contest. If you'd be interested in something like this, leave an inline comment here! Suggestions for how to categorize the poems are welcome; should we go with topics (such as heartbreak) or styles (such as haiku)?
