Yvonne's Pick: The True Covenant: Summer of 1989 by JessicaEdelbrock
Blurb: Erin knows her family is running from something. From her father's insistence she learn to defend herself, to her mother's hesitant introduction to her "bloodrite," Erin has always known they were fleeing something otherworldly. Secrecy and solitude are the mantras of her parents. Her's is a life without a permanent home, without a proper family and without friends.
When three men arrive unannounced at their remote house in Indiana, her life is turned upside down. It is time for her to confront the world of her parents, the world they are hiding from. She needs to learn quickly who among her kin can be trusted and who is a threat to her very life.
Will she embrace this strange new life with the supernatural? Or will her power, spurred on by her mysterious Uncles, consume her heart, body and soul?
Why recommended? I first ran across Jessica's writing in a book club. I find her mastery of grammar and punctuation mechanics make the read easy and the prose tells the story at a good pace. Her character development is spot on as are the plot points. It was a refreshing read, and I was very happy that I'd been assigned to read her entire book. As it turns out I ended up reading the entire series! I very much enjoyed the story of Erin, her family, friends... and enemies. I think that The True Covenant: Summer of 1989 is a great read for Young Adult and above. Check it out!
Sky's Pick: Ten by ___Yoshi___
Blurb: Kate knew one thing for sure; she wanted to find a cure.
Max knew one thing for sure; he was supposed to be dead two years ago.
•••
When Princess Kate and Prince Joe are forced to leave the safety of their castle, they are faced with bigger problems than the problem of their unstable relationship with their parents.
A virus, known as the Spider-Virus, was fatal. It took exactly ten days to weaken your immune system so much, your body shut down. It was like a parasite to your vital organs.
But you see... that wasn't the worst part about it. The worst part was the fact that, at the rate people were getting infected, the entire country of the United Kingdom would be dead in less than a year.
Why Recommended?: Anything apocalypse, I'm there for it. The difference with Ten is that it takes on a new way to describe an outbreak. When you start reading, you don't exactly know what to expect, but as you carry on, you find yourself entrapped. There's never a dull moment in Ten which makes it even more enthralling because you're on the edge of your seat. The writing honestly makes you feel like you're there. If apocalypse or outbreak survival stories interests you, consider giving Ten a read.
LuliWrites' Pick: The Perils of Presumption by SarahSokol5
Blurb: Lord Benjamin Winters has ambitions to become the leader of the London Conclave of Magical Practitioners. He gets his wish, though not in the manner he had hoped, when the reclusive current leader, Avery Whitcomb is found dead in his home. Ben and his cousin Oliver are certain there is foul play afoot - that Avery's death is connected to the latest rash of crimes committed involving black magic. When Ben comes face to face with Avery's grieving sister, he makes a promise to fin the killer, no matter the cost.
Lady Charlotte Whitcomb has lived in solitude for much of her life. Her brother Avery told her it was the best, for her healing gift is rare, and were it ever discovered, her life would never be the same. With her brother now dead by nefarious means, she is left unprotected and exposed to a world of magic, mystery, and murder. She is determined not only to survive, but to ensure that her brother's killer is brought to justice, with or without the help of the overbearing and unaccountably attractive Lord Winters.
Why Recommended: I'm an avid reader of fantasy romance stories especially when there is some historical aspect to it. The author puts so much detail into the portrayal of Charlotte and Ben that you immediately start rooting for their relationship and hope that her brother's killer will be found. The fact that a significant amount of research about the setting went into this story was just icing on the cake for me. From the language to the character interactions, you'll find yourself falling deeper and deeper into this intricately woven Victorian romance. If you're a fan of magic and historical romances, this story is definitely one that you'll want to check out!
NDeMeer's Pick: Werks, Queens and Other Dangerous Things by KathaOwens
Blurb: One queen. One apprentice. Giant metal clockwerk insects.
It's 1897 and clockwerks of destruction threaten the kingdom of the Netherlands. In response, the Royal Council is forcing inexperienced Queen Wilhelmina into a close alliance with either Britain or Germany. But Mina is no fool. She knows that Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm are known for making empires, not alliances.
Bakianto of Java hasn't the luxury of throwing away any opportunity. When offered an apprenticeship (in werks of purpose, not destruction, of course) at Noordeinde Palace, he takes it. Mayhaps he can use it as a chance to improve with the old twist and bend while he tracks down the father who abandoned him. Say what you will of the palace toffs: they suit his purpose.
When Mina and Kian are thrown together, everything changes. Mina has to discover why the Council is pushing the alliance. Kian must learn the real reason his father left. Then there is the pesky business of how they feel about each other: an undeniable attraction despite the unsuitableness of the match. Really, the whole thing is becoming quite a bother!
All the while, attacks from werks of destruction grow more frequent, threatening the country, their relationship, and their very lives.
Why Recommended: I'm not normally a huge fan of historical fiction, but I can honestly say that this one is pretty darn special. Katharine expertly switches tone of voice and accent between royal and common characters. Each and every one of her characters is well thought out and has their own personality. As you read the story, it feels like you're solving a puzzle. As if you're helping the characters figure out the codes, schemes and mysteries that they encounter. The fact that it's set in my home country, and flawlessly weaves Dutch history into the story, is just an added bonus. This book is a fantastic Victorian era steampunk, fitting for both adults and young adults. Enjoy!
