Interview
This month, we have the pleasure of interviewing CrystalAndFelicity! This is a joint account between CrystalJJohnson and eternalfelicity . We're so excited to get the opportunity to see just how well these two ladies communicate and are able to put out various works of art! We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did giving it!
ToD: This month, our tagline for Aspire is 'to begin'. How did you two fall into the idea of creating a joint account?
Crystal and Felicity: We totally didn't plan it. Back in 2018, right after I (Felicity) joined Wattpad, Crystal and I were both part of a writer's group that met in a Chatzy chatroom just to talk writing and other random stuff. Sometimes, the group would do roleplays as writing exercises, and that night, our friends gave us a prompt: do a roleplay about an incubus and a human girl. So we totally winged it and did a detailed and intriguing roleplay. We both fell in love with the concept of the story, and after a short discussion in which I promised to stop being a pantser, we decided to write Edge of the Veil. We never even toyed with the idea of posting it on one of our solo profiles; from the beginning, we knew we'd want a joint profile so we could share the outcome of whatever the story brought!
ToD: This profile is rather successful, was it a lengthy process building a fanbase?
Crystal and Felicity: Since we both had established our solo accounts, we did see some of our readers trickle over from there. But the paranormal-romance stories we write for CrystalAndFelicity are unlike what we write on our own, so in many ways, we were starting from the bottom. The thing that helped us grow the most was when our debut story Edge of the Veil was placed on the Featured List (now the Editors Choice). We think the account would have easily stalled out after that if we hadn't continued to be active and uploading new stories.
ToD: A couple of your stories have been featured on the main screen in the Editor's Picks, would you mind telling us how it felt to find that out?
Crystal and Felicity: It is an amazing feeling to be featured on the Editor's Picks list. We'll never forget when Edge was featured after only being posted for a few weeks. Felicity called Crystal and practically yelled, "WE GOT FEATURED!!!" Since then, we've had three more stories featured (two solos and one co-written), and the feeling never ever gets old. It honestly feels like we imagine getting nominated for an Oscar or something would feel!
ToD: Which of your stories was the hardest to write together and which has been your favorite?
Crystal and Felicity: It is SO easy to write together, that nothing feels particularly difficult, but we have to say that Between the Veils, the sequel to our debut novel, was the most difficult just because it took us so long to write, and we feel that it's our story with the weakest plot. We love all of our stories, and we have had an amazing time writing them all, but we have to say Spellbound is our favorite, and we will go into more detail on that in the next question.
ToD: Would you mind telling us a bit about your latest story?
Crystal and Felicity: Spellbound was inspired by a trip we took together and the haunted hotel we stayed in. Gemma is a college dropout who inherits a lucrative haunted hotel. She quickly learns that the ghost stories she heard as a child are real and two very attractive twin brothers have called the Reynard Hotel their home for over a hundred years. She finds herself drawn to the men and helping them solve the mystery of who or what has spellbound them to the hotel.
ToD: Both of you guys are Stars with your own profiles and you're both ambassadors. Can you tell us a bit about how you both are able to balance your personal accounts and your joint one along with both of you being ambassadors?
Crystal and Felicity: It is a challenge for sure! We are Outreach ambassadors, so we are responsible for greeting new Wattpad users. It does not take a huge amount of time, so that's not an issue. Being Stars on our joint profile is easy peasy as we write all our stories together for that profile. What we always have to make sure we do is take time to write for our solo profiles as well. Luckily, we both would rather be writing in our spare time than anything else, so it works!
ToD: I've noticed you guys are really close. If you don't mind me asking, how did your friendship start?
Crystal and Felicity: Our friendship started when we started writing Edge! Before that, we were just members of the same chat group, but we clicked instantly when we started getting to know each other. You don't co-write a novel and not become best friends. If you do, then... you probably won't be cowriting ever again. We just have so much in common and are at such similar places in our lives that becoming best friends was so natural. So, a huge thank you to Wattpad for bringing us together.
ToD: Would you say that being such good friends has helped both of your creativities as writers?
Crystal and Felicity: Of course. We can bounce any idea off each other, no matter how crazy or far-fetched it might sound, and we are never afraid of being judged. We are often on the same wavelength and sometimes we don't even have to discuss things—they just turn out the way we want because we think so much alike, and that includes creative matters.
ToD: If you could pick a character to be from one of your stories, who and why?
Crystal and Felicity: We would choose Ella from Wish. She has a hot genie/god ready to grant her every wish. Who wouldn't want that?
ToD: Is there any advice you can give to new and old writers?
Crystal and Felicity: To new and old writers alike: be prepared to learn about your craft. Writing is a never-ending process of betterment. Once you understand how to write a compelling plot, you need to learn how to create a concise delivery, and then you need to learn how to properly use the different types of punctuation to give your story a distinct voice...and so on. If you ever come to the place where you say, "There is nothing new for me to learn," writing is not for you.
Well, there you have it! This has been an exclusive interview with both Crystal and Felicity, two women who love writing and have created a wonderful friendship through it. Now, I've read several stories from Crystal and have yet to read any from Felicity and their joint account. But I know that with how passionate the two women are, anything they put out has to be a work of art and I'm excited to start reading things from Felicity and from their joint account!
With that being said, consider taking a look at their profile(s) and read something sometime! I know I'm excited to read Spellbound and now I'm excited to read Edge of the Veil which was their first story to be featured and the first they wrote together!
