Book Review

Between The Lies by bryonymagee

Title: 4/5 The title couldn't be any more accurate towards the storyline. It tells you exactly what kind of theme to expect and it does not disappoint!

Cover: 4/5 The simplistic touch on this cover is very appealing to the eyes. The photo used is telling of a significant setting having to do with the plot. The font is really nice and so are the colors because it gives me specific thriller vibes. I do think the font's positioning and size could be messed around with to make it even better, but overall, I like it.

Blurb: 4/5 I like how the blurb is short and simple, but still leaves an impact that makes me want to open the book. It's very fitting for the length of the story too, only five chapters.

Plot: 4/5 It's nothing too complicated but still leaves you on your toes. There is, of course, five suspects as the blurb states. Each suspect has an entire chapter through their POV that reveals their whereabouts and what they saw during the hours before the murder (which is why there are only five parts/chapters). It all leads up to who the true murderer is. I like how the author misleads readers with obvious suspects only to come back with a twist in the end.

Pacing: 5/5 One thing I enjoyed about the pacing of this book is it sets itself. Again, that pertains to the length of the book as a whole. I feel it does a good job of steadying the events within just a few hours, from different POV's. And it doesn't feel rushed when we jump into a different POV either. I will say though, there are quite a lot of time skips in some of the chapters, that does throw the pacing off a little bit. But overall, it flows nicely.

Character Development: 3/5 There's not too much character development going on, but certain characters do still have their moments where they may reflect and/or change. This affects how the suspect list moves forward and it shines a light on the character's relationship with the victim's the plot surrounds.

Overall Comments: If you enjoy books and shows like The Runaways, Pretty Little Liars, etc., and you're looking for a quick read, then I definitely recommend checking out Between The Lies! Full of high school drama on a prom night that ends in a gruesome murder, it's definitely worth the read.
