Yvonne's Pick: Poetry (word of the day) forum thread

Blurb: This forum thread, lead by WhatisWithin, gives a daily one-word poetry prompt. You then compose a poem based on said prompt and post it in the thread. The forum, right now, seems a little slow, but if more people would participate, it could get quite lively!

Why Recommended: I think it's important to not only support our prose writers on Wattpad, but our poets, too! In fact, we have our own weekly contest called Pass the Poetry. The forum is a fun way to share and the prompts are daily, which means you are challenged constantly. I like that! I don't come up with something every day, but I do enjoy posting when I'm inspired.

Sky's Pick: Gentlemen Only by user17450679

Blurb: "Am I?" His voice lowered teasingly, and suddenly he was much closer, hands braced against the wall beside her, toned arms pinning her in.

Meredith felt her throat dry up instantly. "Which one?" She stammered, forcing courage that she clearly didn't feel. Her arms were trembling uncontrollably as he brought his face near. "Decent, or handsome?"

"Both." Jet prompted, minty breath caressing her lips, mere inches away.

Socially awkward Meredith Sparks struggles with anxiety. Nerdy to her core, she battled social ostracism in her adolescence, and interacting with people frightens her: especially members of the opposite sex. When her well-meaning, bubbly psychiatrist tells her to confront her fears, Meredith agrees, until the prescription becomes more nerve-wracking than she can handle. Enter Gentlemen Only, the prestigious night club that hosts the most elite, gentlemanly patrons. Now, stuck in a mental tug of war between two very territorial, gorgeous men, Meredith must somehow overcome her own mind in a fight to keep her sanity while she journeys toward healing and self-discovery.

Why Recommended: The sheer time and effort put into this story is simply amazing. The author, first off, uses personal experience for Meredith's anxiety which makes it so real. The description used is also so well done. The author does a fabulous job of show, don't tell. Overall, the story is just a really good one and I think the idea is unique. A lot of times, there aren't stories that have main characters who have issues that everyday people deal with, so it's nice to see it and see it done well. I most definitely feel like everyone reading this should go check out Gentlemen Only.

LuliWrites' Pick: A Wolf At The Door by MaskedParkers

Blurb: Having lived his entire life in a monastery located in the swamps of Louisiana, Olivier knows nothing of how he came to be under the strict watch of the other monks. Growing up, he was forbidden to leave its grounds and venture out into the world beyond.

But the night a mysterious woman appears in need of shelter, dark secrets are revealed, leaving the young monk to acknowledge the terrifying truth about his past.

Why Recommended: This horror/paranormal short story is a very well-written, unique take on the werewolf myth. The descriptions are so beautifully written and the dialogue helps provide the reader with some extra context about the time the story takes place in and where it occurs. Each chapter ends with a vivid cliffhanger, leaving the reader wanting for more. If you're interested in a different take on the werewolf genre and love reading horror stories, this short story is a must read!

Naomi's Pick: OpenNovellaContest

Blurb: Welcome to the official home of the biggest multi-profile event on Wattpad: The Open Novella Contest!

Garnering widespread, popular, and critical acclaim after our first event, our vision was to encourage and celebrate the art of the novella - typically 20k to 40k words.

Why Recommended: Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a big fan of contests. The Open Novella Contest is arguably the largest contest (apart from the Wattys of course) on all of Wattpad. It's not an awards for stories that have been written previously, but a writing contest in which you are challenged to write a story within a particular time-frame. They give you a bunch of prompts to choose from and you get three months to write a completed novella: 20-40K words. There are several rounds along the duration of the contest to make things even more interesting. I had so much fun with this contest last year that I wrote not one, but two novellas for it. And I'm planning to join in again this year. The contest is meant to start on January 1st, so by the time this is posted, it'll be the perfect time for you to hop on over to OpenNovellaContest and join the fun. See you there!

Open Novella Contest III book will be published soon! Follow their profile!

Dahlia's Pick: The Halfdead Girl by TheWarOnEntropy

Blurb: In the southern tip of a war-torn kingdom, a boy comes of age without establishing the telepathic pairlink expected of his race. Dismissed by almost everyone as the village idiot, this one-brained boy seems destined to live as an outsider, a victim of prejudice in a two-brained world.

When he finally decides to fight back, he discovers that his disability comes with compensations, and he initiates a chain of events that will set history on a new path.

Why I Recommend: The instant tension between the protagonist and his surroundings immediately drew me in. It's clear that he's not supposed to be the way he is, yet, as the story unfolds, you learn how the way his nation works purposefully alienates those like him. I think many of us can relate to that sentiment, feeling out of place or purposefully shoved to the side. Their book explores these well and the world-building is intertwined naturally within the narrative and dialogue.

While the book doesn't have overt romance besides the mention of a past crush (at least up until the part that I have read), the setting does wonders in exploring both the healthy and unhealthy aspects of relationships with others and with oneself. You see a distinct difference between the character's muddad (mom and dad) pair alongside the strange yet endearing Flitts. It does this all through the lens of "singlehood" (aka being a halfwit) among those who are paired. It's an incredibly refreshing read to see these themes tackled in a way that shows each side (single vs relationship) in an honest light. Give it a read! It's sure to make you think.
