Book Review

Until There Was You by Eastwards

Title: 5/5 The title plays a significant part in reeling the reader in and playing out possible ideas of how the story will go. Needless to say, entering the story, I was not disappointed with the title.

Cover: 4/5 While the cover is a bit plain, the simplicity and aesthetically pleasing colors makes it look nice. I particularly love the black drop shadow behind the words and the choice of font; a pretty curvy font. It gives off an interesting and creative vibe with the way the shadow has been set up, a contrast of white and black.

Blurb: 5/5 The blurb has a certain intrigue to it that immediately drew me into Waverly Clarke's character as a possible love interest. I found myself wondering questions like, what's so mysterious about her? How is she familiar? It does a good job of grabbing readers attention.

Plot: 5/5 This would probably have to be one of my favorite things about this book. When I first read the book, I couldn't get enough. I was so immersed in the plot. Not only did I feel for the characters, but I felt like I was living within their world the entire time, being able to relate to them on every level. And the slow burn/growth made it all the better. The plot guides readers through the lives of both teens, how they cope with life at home and in high school, the challenges of facing young adulthood (parties, relationships, preparing for college, etc.), how they deal with their new budding romance, and questioning "forever" in the world. We also get a taste of what it's like for interracial couples, and the backlash that is dealt with.

Pacing: 5/5 At first, the pacing starts off fast. It immediately throws us into the situation that is set and goes on from there. But as the story progresses, I noticed the pacing begins to slow down. I love that, because it gave readers a chance to get familiar with the characters, and witness the build up between Waverly and Jude's relationship.

Character Development: 5/5 Starting with Jude, he appears to be a very "sensitive" or "insecure" character. Not in a bad way, but he often let others run over him and control his life, including his own parents. At least until Waverly entered his life. We notice a change in Jude's attitude as he begins to hang out with Waverly more. She brings out another side to him, one that teaches him to live on the edge almost, and don't worry about what others think because that's how Waverly's character is. Which leads me to her development, which in my opinion, was the most obvious and beautiful of all. In the beginning, Waverly appears to be a lone soul, with a carefree attitude, who doesn't care about other's opinions about her. She lives everyday like it's her last; thinking deep about everything. But as we dissect her character, there's more to it than just a "lone character". She's so complex, it makes you never want to stop reading. There's a sense of, loneliness, anger, etc. But towards the end, Waverly is less to herself, and we actually get a sense of openness from her. Which is very surprising for her character being that she mostly spoke in riddles through the entire book; purposely.

Overall Comments: This is one of my favorite books on Wattpad and one of the best high school romances I've ever read on here. If you're looking for a fun slow-burn, with characters that make you question the world, and makes you think about the hardships of life and the positives, I'd definitely recommend Until There Was You!
