Ask An Editor: Questions

This page is designed for you to ask questions and help each other with editing. Feel free to ask any questions you about writing, revising, and editing below.

Here are a few questions I will answer about the Ask An Editor book to start us off:

Q1: @eliana_elf, will you read my book and tell me what needs editing?

A1: I don't take reading requests; however, if you have specific questions about editing your book, I'm happy to help. If the issue involves more than 250 words, though, the question may not be specific enough, and I may have to decline.

Q2: @eliana_elf can you edit my book?

A2: Unfortunately, no. This book is designed to help you learn to self-edit. Depending on the copyeditor, hiring a professional to edit your book can be expensive. Due to restraints in my personal life, I cannot take on extra clients at this time.

Q3: @eliana_elf will you vote on my book or leave comments?

A3: Like I stated above, I don't take reading requests. I vote on things I see as having potential, and I don't like to review books because I do that right now for a living. I try to have fun when I read, and trying to provide criticism is difficult for me because it blurs the line between my personal enjoyment of a story and doing a job as a copyeditor.

Q4: Someone criticized my story, and I don't think they were right. Does my story need fixing?

A4: Sometimes, people won't like your story or the way you write. Occasionally, I'm criticized for my paragraph length. With time and a keen eye, you will be able to spot the difference between someone who is looking to complain because they didn't like something you did versus something you need to improve.

Q5: How do I get better at seeing mistakes in my own writing?

A5: Time and practice. Even I still make mistakes. I generally prefer to put a minimum of a three-week buffer between when I write something and when I edit it when possible. I find the distance helps with my accuracy.
