Fangirling

Yes, another Rex one shot. DON'T JUDGE ME.

Tw: Violence? Injury.

Jill was a nerd. That was a fact. She was the biggest nerd in all existence. She specifically was a nerd that really enjoyed learning about war.

Weird, but she'd accepted that a long time ago.

Obviously she didn't want war. All the battles and death and stuff. But the techniques? And the strategies? Ask her about high ground versus low ground and she'll spend thirty minutes talking your ear off.

Because she was so well-studied in battle tactics, she was a shoo-in for the strategist position in the 501st legion. She began her work, and was in awe at everything. The formations, the weapons, everything was so kriffing cool.

Except the death. That was bad.

But other than that, she enjoyed her time with the 501st. One time she had gotten lost in the weapon storage room and Jesse had to rescue her. He was quite amused to find her with a dissembled DC-17m and a curiosity that would kill a Tooka.

There was another instance where she went too far, with her nerding out over a starship in the hanger. Then she had tripped. Ahsoka caught her, using the Force, but it was still embarrassing.

Then one day, she saw Captain Rex.

"Oh my-" Jill cut herself off and stared down at her meal. She was sitting in the cantina along with some of her friends. "Don't look now, but guess who just walked in."

Jesse glanced up, scowling slightly. "I... I don't see anyone? Who is it?"

"Captain Rex!" Jill hissed under her breath. "Do you not know who he is?"

Harcase's eyebrows went up. "Ah. Does someone have a crush on him?"

"Absolutely not," Jill immediately said. "Just a big fan. Kark, he's coming this way! Everyone stay cool!"

Fives grinned at the captain. "Hey. You eating lunch with us?"

Rex nodded. "It's been a while, so here I am."

Jill was not hyperventilating.

"This is our dear friend Jill," Jesse said, slinging an arm over her shoulder. "Have you met each other?"

"No, I don't think we have." Rex smiled pleasantly. "I'm CT-7567, or Captain Rex."

Jill stared at him with wide eyes. "I- You- I- Heowifa? I forgot I have work to do!"

Then she bolted out the door.

Rex frowned in her directed as he watched her sprint away. "Did I say something wrong?"

Fives shook his head and snorted. "Nope. You did everything right, that's the problem."

Why was she such an idiot? She had completely freaked out at lunch. He probably thought she was insane now.

Jill groaned as she sat at her desk. She spun around to clear her head before picking up her datapad again. She was just getting invested in a form when there was a knock on her door.

"Come in," Jill called, setting the device in her hands down.

Captain Rex strutted (okay maybe not strutted, but Jill's vision was full of his glory and it sure seemed that way) and cleared his throat. "I wanted to make sure I hadn't upset you. You ran away quickly at lunch."

Jill's face turned red. "Oh. That's really kind of you, but I'm fine. I needed to get back to work."

He bobbed his head in understanding. "Because you didn't get to finish your meal, would you like to come down with me to-"

"Yes!"

He blinked in surprise. "What?"

Jill resisted the urge to facepalm and replied again, "Yes, I would love to. I'm- uh, I'm starving."

Rex stepped aside so she could exit the office, and they walked side-by-side down the hallways.

"So," she blurted out before she knew what she was saying, "I was always fascinated by your hair."

"What?" The corners of his eyes wrinkled as he looked at her with a puzzled expression.

"I mean-" Jill panicked," why is your hair a different colour than every other clone I've ever seen? Not that I've researched it at all. Or studied the videos of you in combat."

Rex opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted by Ahsoka tapping Jill on the shoulder.

"What're you guys doing?" Ahsoka asked, gazing at Jill knowingly.

Jill's stomach sunk. The news of her fangirling had spread. "We're going to get something to eat."

Ahsoka nudged Rex's side with her elbow. "Maybe I should join. I could eat right now."

Why did Rex look slightly disappointed?

"Oh, but I can't," Ahsoka mournfully said. "I have to meet with Skyguy. Oh well. Have fun, you two."

Rex blew out a breath. "Thank you. We will."

Jill made a mental note to steal- BORROW -his DC-17s to see if it was really as light as she had heard. It was impressive to make a pistol a heavy blaster and an ascension gun.

"-tomorrow?" Rex finished asking, glancing over at her.

Jill froze. She was too busy thinking about the DC-17s that she hadn't heard a word of what he was saying. "Uh, yes."

"Thanks so much." Rex looked relieved. "I really appreciate this. General Skywalker will be thrilled to hear it."

Jill smiled weakly. "Of course."

"I'll pick you up during breakfast and bring you to it," Rex said. "I'm so glad we don't have to have Fives do it this time. He always screws up somehow."

"Okay, so none of our blasters are a set to kill. All stun. And the Jedi have promised not to dice you up," Rex assured her.

"I trust you," Jill absently said, silently thinking about how cool it was to be in a practise battle.

Something flickered in his gaze, but he forced himself to look away and faced his team. "Alright, men! You know the stakes!"

Fives set his jaw. "Extra dessert for a month is on the line."

Hardcase's hands balled up into fists. "We can't lose this."

Rex crossed his arms and pointed his chin at Jill. "We have our target. The only thing left to do is retrieve the target."

Jesse gave Jill a wary look. "Are you sure you want to do this? When dessert is on the line we can get a bit competitive."

"Get ready to lose!" Ahsoka screamed from the other side of the hanger.

"Forget I said anything. You have to do this." Jesse placed his hands on Jill's shoulders. "Too much is at risk."

Jill laughed. "I won't let you down. But I feel like your need to win doesn't influence me."

"Target gets extra dessert no matter who wins as long as they avoid being caught longer than ten minutes," Echo informed her, much to Hardcase's displeasure.

"Hey, you'll let us win, right?" Jesse whispered to her.

"What's in it for me?" Jill raised a challenging brow. "Because I get extra dessert no matter what."

Jesse hesitated before brightening. "I'll get you an autograph from the captain!"

Jill snorted. "Do better. An autograph doesn't cut it."

"Jesse," Rex tiredly said, his voice cutting through the chatter in the hanger. "Are you trying to bribe the target?"

"No, sir," Jesse responded, standing straighter. He winked at Jill as he walked away, mouthing, yes.

"Have fun," Rex told Jill as he looked to Anakin. "Your time starts now."

Jill started to sprint away, aiming for her office. She knew the locking combination for that door and felt confident with that tactic.

Then her strategist mind took over.

Sure she only needed to last ten minutes to get the extra dessert, but she wanted to go further. She was helping them train, after all. She wanted to win.

As soon as she reached her office, Jill climbed atop her desk. She climbed into the vents in the ceiling and placed the grate in behind her, as to not arouse suspicion.

Jill snickered quietly to herself as she crawled through the ducts. She eventually reached a vent where she could watch the hallways.

After a couple minutes, she saw Anakin and Ahsoka turn around the corner, followed by a handful of clones. Anakin put his hands on his hips and shook his head.

"I lost her signature," he said in disappointment.

"Don't look at me," Ahsoka said once the clones glanced to her. "He's supposed to be the master."

"Hey." Anakin shot her a dirty look. "Do you want the extra dessert or not?"

Ahsoka gritted her teeth. "I'm sorry, master. I lost sight for a moment."

"It's okay." Anakin flicked her nose. "Just remember why we're here."

Ahsoka snapped her teeth at his fingers which were still too close to her nose. "Do that again. I dare you."

Anakin narrowed his eyes. "Oh, I'll do it."

"Then do it."

"Don't make me do it."

"I'm making you do it."

A clone cleared his throat. "We should find her before the others do."

"Right. Thank you." Anakin turned on his heel, smirking at Ahsoka. "You're lucky."

"You're lucky," Ahsoka argued.

"They do love to argue."

Jill startled, knocking her head on the wall. She whipped her head around to see Rex crouched next to her. "What the-"

He lunged for her.

Jill shrieked and started crawling away as fast as she could. She kicked his hand away as it attempted to latch around her ankle.

"It hasn't been ten minutes yet!" Jill shouted. "I need that dessert!"

She kicked a grate open and tumbled out into the hallways. As soon as she landed she started running.

She wasn't fast enough to outrun him. He was a trained soldier who went through endurance training. She just needed to think.

Then she remembered.

In one of his reports (not that she was stalking him. It just... happened to be brought up on her datapad one day) it mentioned how he dislocated his shoulder. Perhaps it hadn't healed properly and she could use it against him.

She stopped running.

He didn't notice in time.

Jill let out a cry as they both crumpled to the floor together. She squirmed and wiggled until she got free and spun around with a look of absolute craziness of her face.

Rex paled. He'd seen that look on Fives' face enough times to know what was coming. "Jill-"

She came down elbows first on his shoulder.

Or at least she tried.

Rex grabbed her wrist and twisted, throwing her off balance. He pulled her down and pushed himself up so he was standing over her.

"Hey!" Jill exclaimed as she fell.

Before she scraped her knees on the ground, he caught her. Her breath hitched as she stared into his eyes.

His lips twisted into a smile and he said, "I guess I win."

Then she sucker-punched him in the face.

"Suck it, loser!" Jill cackled as she made her escape.

Rex clutched at his nose, glowering at her. "What a way to treat your idol."

Jill stumbled. "What did you say?"

"That's right," Rex smugly said. "I know about your fangirling."

"How'd you know?" Jill demanded.

"You're not discrete at all," Rex told her as he rubbed at the bridge of his nose. "Also I think you broke my nose."

Jill covered her mouth with her hands. "I'm so sorry. I really didn't mean it."

He grabbed her wrists and pinned the to her front. Her whispered into her ear, "I win."

Jill slumped against him. "Fine. Those extra desserts were calling my name, though."

"Twelve minutes," Rex told her as he released her. "You get your extra dessert."

"Great." Jill grinned victoriously. "And now that you know what a nerd I am, can I please ask you some questions?"

Rex sighed. "Sure. But if Kix asks how I broke my nose, you're answering to him."

"Deal," Jill agreed.

"And you have to let me take you on a date," Rex negotiated.

"That's more than okay with me." Jill was practically bouncing off the walls in excitement.
