Basil didn't know how long he was fighting for. It could have been minutes, it could have been a couple of hours. Kill aliens, rescue civilians. Kill aliens, rescue civilians, rinse repeat. Through out it he could hear the others in his ears. Tony in the sky with Clint and Thor. Clint giving them all updates on what was going on and where. His hawk sharp eyes coming in especially useful as the battle raged on. Basil was slightly glad that the portal itself wasn't bigger. It was only big enough for one of those turtle war ships to come in one at a time. If it was bigger then they would already be dead.
"I'm a good guy!" He shouted as he entered the fifth building so far. Body walking through the walls. "I'm here to help. Is anyone injured?"
"Over here!" A cry and he was hurrying over to a man who's leg had been crushed by falling stone. He set down the medical kit he had stolen from a destroyed pharmacy and set to work. Splinting the leg to keep the injured still and tying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. When he was done, he lifted the man over his shoulder in a fireman carry and led the people out to the police line as Steve and Nat gave him cover. No sooner had he passed the man to the police and ambulance services, then he was back into the fray with his blades out.
"I'm here to help! Is there anyone injured?"
"He won't wake up!" A teen age boy with a bleeding head injury but a strong pulse. Basil swiftly bandaged it and checked the boy's breathing and heart rate. Both steady. Then he was moving, pulling the group of teens who had been hiding in a clothes store out and down to the nearest subway station where trains were waiting to safely transport people out of the city. Basil handed him over then unclipped his helmet and ran a hand through his curls. Then he was putting the helmet back on and returning to the surface.
"I'm here to help! Is there anyone injured?"
"She won't stop bleeding!"
A middle aged woman with her teen daughter at her side. The girl pressing a scarf to a bleeding wound in the woman's stomach. Bask pushed her aside and checked the wound. Glass shrapnel from an explosion had pierced her upper abdomen, just under her ribs. The woman was pale and unconscious, blood pouring from the injury. He grunted and let his hand go through her. "Her organs are okay", he sighed as he fished out bandages. He wrapped the wound expertly until no more blood was leaking and picked her up. He led the woman and her daughter to the police line and a waiting ambulance. Not staying as the first responders began treating her. There was blood on his sleeves and his uniform was damp with sweat.
"I'm here to help! Is there anyone injured?"
"Help, my child had been burned!"
"I'm here to help! Is there anyone injured?"
"My husband is trapped! The wall caved in!"
"I'm here to help! Is there anyone injured?"
"The stair case has collapsed. My children are still stuck upstairs!"
"I'm here to help! Is there anyone injured?"
"He's been shot. One of those things shot him in the shoulder!"
"Have you seen my son? Please!"
"There's a school bus stuck half a block away!"
The super soldier made him faster and gave him a higher metabolism than normal humans but Basil could feel the exhaustion waning on him. He could hear his teammates in his ears. Natasha was dealing with the portal and Steve was still on the ground. His star spangled arse keeping the aliens busy. Somehow the red head had found her way on to one of the flying aliens above and the Hulk was with Thor. The two of them going after the turtles. Basil was aware of all this distantly. He had a job and civilians came first. No one had died in his hands yet and he was going to do his best to keep that from happening.
"Captain, Corporal", the voice came through their comms. Finally the home guard had arrived and were helping Tony enforce the perimeter, keeping the aliens contained. "The bank on 31st and Maddison. They have a lot of civilians trapped in there".
"On it", Steve replied. "Basil?"
Basil handed a crying toddler over to a policeman. "Copy that". Then he was running. Through the buildings and through the fray like a mirage.
He got there first. Running straight through the wall and into the crowd of people in the centre of the room. Aliens were on the second floor, guns pointed down as they surrounded the humans below. Basil headed unseen for the stairs and took them two at a time. As he reached the second story, he pulled out the two hunting knives and threw them. They hit their targets and the two nearest aliens slumped over the banister. As others turned to him, he pulled two more smaller knives from his belt as he ran for his hunting knives. He didn't miss.
As he retrieved his long knives, he saw Steve enter through the window on the other side. The shield gleaming as he threw it. "Everyone!" He called. "Clear out!" Basil threw a knife and a alien who was about to attack Steve from behind slumped. The man nodded at him before throwing another alien over the bannister, using the momentum to break the creature's neck. Basil dispatched of the last two aliens near him and ran round to meet Steve. He got there just as a alien threw some beeping device. Steve jumped, hiding himself behind his shield as the bomb blew. Basil watched him disappear out of the window before turning on the alien with a magical laugh. Down below, a few people shuddered at the noise. Purple blood sprayed.
Basil wiped the blood onto his trousers as he looked down at the people below. "Are any of you injured?" He called. Shakes of their heads. He sighed in relief. "Get out of here, all of you. Get to the police line!" Then he was jumping out the window to see if Steve was alright.
Steve was lying on top of a car. Basil wondered over and poked him. The blonde let out a groan and raised a hand. Basil chuckled fondly and took it, helping Steve climb out of the ruined vehicle. "For a minute there you had me concerned Cap", he grinned. Steve groaned and gave a gasp of pain as Basil pulled him up. The shorter man poked at his sides. "Two cracked ribs and lots of bruising. As your doctor, I advise you to avoid more grenades in the future". Steve gave a wheezing laugh as he pulled off his helmet. Around them firemen and policemen had arrived and were guiding the people from the building.
Basil laughed with them and pulled off his own helmet for a breather. "God almighty Basil", Steve muttered. "You look almost as bad as me". They both snorted. The two of them covered in dust and grime. Purple blood mixing with their own red from scrapes and bruises. Basil's stab wound from the day before had reopened slightly and it pulled painfully when he moved too much. He winced as he glanced at it. The blood a dark patch on his clothes.
There was a chuckle down the comms. "What's so funny?" Basil asked.
"The hulk has just gone for Loki", Clint replied back, glee clear in his voice.
"Awe man and I'm missing it?" Tony whined. Something exploded on his side.
"Shame", Steve snorted. "I would have liked to see that too". He sighed and pulled on his helmet. Basil did the same. The two war buddies exchanged looks. "Back to work then?"
"Back to work".
