The remainders of the avengers group were waiting for him at the jet. Basil slowed his jog down to a walk as he reached the boarding ramp. "So", he grinned as he climbed up. Tony and Steve were waiting inside. As soon as he walked in, the ramp closed behind him. "Are we off to certain death?" In the front of the plane, Nat reached up to press some buttons. There was a man in the seat next to her. All Basil could see was short cut blonde hair and a bow and quiver resting next to the pilots chair.
The man snorted. "I like him. Where did you pick him up?"
"The forties. You wouldn't think it but baby boy there is a fossil", Nat replied. She shot a small teasing grin over her shoulder as Basil sat down.
"Baby boy. That's cute. I like that", Basil nodded. He stuck his helmet on his head and strapped himself in. The plane began to hum as it powered up to take off. "Where are we going?" He asked as the plane left the steady ground of the helicarrier and soared out into the sky.
"New York. We think that Loki is at Stark tower", Steve stated.
"The audacity. Some god thinks he can steal my tower", Tony muttered grumpily.
"When we get there you can tell him that", Basil grinned. "Tell him in exquisite detail how rude it is".
"That's exactly what I'm planning", Tony grinned back.
"You guys can unbuckle your seatbelts now", Nat called. The man flicked a few switches and the jet flew smoothly. Basil flicked his seatbelts off and stood up. He crossed over to the cockpit and leaned between the two seats.
"Hi", he smiled at the man. "You must be Hawkguy. Barton? Nice to meet you. I'm Jahi Basilton Parrish but friends call me Baz or Basil". He held out a hand and Clint Barton shook it.
"Yeah I've heard about you".
Basil grinned wider. He looked the man over. Clint looked worn and tired. There was a purpling bruise on his temple and he guessed that Nat had reset him with the age old method of knocking Barton unconscious. Understandable. Basil got that urge to reset someone often. He also noticed the clauses on Clint's hands, the small black devices in his ears and the knives on his belt. "Sorry", he apologised. "I only know British sign language and it's from the 40s. Not sure how useful that will be".
Clint blinked in surprise. "Normally people don't notice. But thank you for telling me. I know British sign language but you might want to brush up on the changes".
"It's on the list along with updating my medical degree and my media references. At the moment all I've got is movie references from the 40s", Basil shrugged.
"No singing!" Steve voiced.
"Wait you sing Baz?" Tony asked excitedly. "My father never told me that".
"Don't encourage him", Steve muttered. Basil grinned widely and turned to them. Steve smirked as he caught the look in Basil's eyes. "Though I have to admit that he is a good singer".
"I am an amazing singer", Basil preened.
"Good for you Baz", Clint nodded. He seemed to be catching on to their social dynamic with amazing speed. Baz pouted at him.
"Singing aside", Nat said. "What's the plan?"
——
Any plan they had went out of the window as soon as the jet neared New York City. Tony had flown on ahead and when they arrived it was to see a open portal in the sky with weird aliens flying down from it. The red and gold speck of the iron man suit flying between them as explosions started to sound below. Basil pulled a face at the aliens. The creatures looked like a hybrid of grey flesh and metal, almost cyborg like and definitely inhuman.
Nat and Clint flew the ship expertly between the skyscrapers as the guns destroyed the trail of aliens following Tony. Basil and Steve gripping the straps dangling from the ceiling as it swerved and almost knocked them from their feet. "Is that Thor?" Basil asked as he leaned out to see through the glass. Down below as the plan flew over the balcony of Stark tower, he could see a red cape and blonde hair.
Loki turned as Nat began firing. "Hold on", Clint called as the god raised his staff. A blue bolt of energy burst from it and took out their wing. Something exploded and the ship shook as it began going down. Basil reached up and gripped the strap looped round his wrist. Next to him Steve did the same as the ship began to spin.
"At lest this crash isn't in the artic", He grinned as his feet lifted off the floor. Steve rolled his eyes under his helmet as the ship finally landed with a shuddering, crumbling skid across a paved square. As soon as it was down, Nat was opening the ramp and getting out of her seat. Basil took a breath to steady himself as he unwound his wrist from the strap. He checked that all his knives were still on him before tightening the strap of his helmet and following them all outside.
New York was in chaos. Sirens were wailing and people were running. There was already a astonishing amount of debris littering the streets around Stark tower and above them more aliens poured through the portal. "We've got to get back up there", Steve said as he began jogging towards the centre of the action. Nat, Clint and Basil all on his heels.
A loud mechanical groan made then stop on a bridge. People fleeing past them as the four avengers turned to look up at the blue stormy hole in the sky. Basil gaped as a massive mechanical creature, easily the size of a skyscraper flew through. It looked like a turtle. With gleaming metal fins and a plated armoured shell. It roared, exposing sharp teeth easily bigger than a average human. "That is disgusting", Basil grimaced. "That's going to haunt my nightmares for weeks. Yuck". They watched at it flew over them. It seemed to be a ship as well as a living thing. Metal covered it's body and from holes in it's abdomen, more aliens on hovering platforms were ejected.
"Stark are you seeing this?" Steve asked down the comm.
"Seeing. Still working on believing", Tony replied. "Where's banner? He shown up yet?"
"Banner?"
"Just keep me posted".
Basil flinched as a blue laser went right through him. He turned as the aliens began shooting at them. Steve, Nat and Clint all ducked behind a abandoned taxi. "We've got civilians still trapped down there!" Clint pointed down to the street below them. Basil turned just as a set of cop cars blew up.
"Basil! They're fish in a barrel down there" Steve called. Basil turned to him and his captain nodded. "You go get civilians. We can handle this".
"Copy that cap!" Basil saluted before disappearing through the bridge. He dropped to the ground in a run. Lasers and obstacles simply going through him as he ran towards the screaming. "Three months ago I was in World War Two and now I'm fighting fucking aliens", he muttered as he drew his hunting knives. "Fuck this for a game of soldiers. Sarge, I'll hopefully see you soon".
