"Initiate system?"
Basil jumped as a small electronic voice spoke. Green words had typed themselves up on the largest computer screen. Nat stepped forward and typed out the word yes. "Shall we play a game?" She grinned. "It's from a movie".
"I know", Steve muttered. "We saw".
The computer began humming and green lights began dancing around the screen as the pixels took like. A voice, a disturbingly familiar voice, one that sent shivers down Basil's spine, began speaking. "Rogers. Steven. Born 1922". Up above the main screen, a camera turned. "Parrish. Jahi. Born 1924". The camera turned again. "Romanoff. Natalia Alianovana. Born 1984".
Nat jerked at the sound of her name. "It must be some kind of recording".
"I am not a recording fraeuline", the voice snapped. The green pixels had taken shape and there was a imprint of round dark glasses and a nose. "I may not be the man I was when the captain took me prisoner back in 1945. But I am". On the screen to the right appeared a black and white image. Basil froze as his eyes widened.
"Oh god".
"You know this thing?" Nat asked.
"He was one of the doctors who experimented on me", Basil felt sick. He covered his mouth with his hands, mumbling the words through his fingers. "He was the one who tested the super soldier serum on me and Bucky". He took a step back, horrified.
Steve had began walking around the computer screen as if he could try and find the ox behind the curtain. "Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for the red skull. He's been dead for years".
"First correction, I am Swiss", the computer replied. "Second, look around you. I have never been more alive. In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body. My mind however, that was worth saving. On two hundred thousand feet of databanks. You are standing in my brain".
"How did you get here?" Steve asked as he circled round to join Nat and Basil again.
"Invited".
"There was a operation paper clip after ww2", Nat explained. "Shield recruited German scientists with strategic value".
"Why would they do that?" Basil asked. "Bucky died trying to capture this man. This man held us captive for weeks. Had us strapped to metal tables while he tortured us. Why would anyone want to work with someone like that?"
"I am glad to see that you are still alive", the computer, Zola, said. "That some of my super soldier serum tests paid off. They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own".
"Hydra died with the red skull", Steve stated firmly.
"Cut off one head. Two more shall take it's place".
"No", Basil slammed his hands down on the panel. "No. Bucky died trying to stop you. I died trying to stop you. It can't have been for nothing".
"Ah yes. The brave Sargent Barnes", Zola's voice seemed gleeful. "I remember my capture. You weren't there, were you Corporal Parrish? Would you like to see?"
On the left hand screen, black and white footage. Basil couldn't help but take a step closer. With the blurry pixels, he could make out Steve in a narrow metal room. The hydra train. The white captain America star stood out. Next to him, Basil made a choked noise at the sight, was a tall familiar man. Bucky had his back to where the camera was placed. They watched as he shot a black uniformed hydra soldier and stepped up next to Steve. Basil was shaking.
"Stop this", Steve muttered wildly, eyes wide as the three of them watched in horrid fascination. On screen, Steve turned and immediately held up his shield, one arm reaching for Bucky. A blue blast shot out as a hydra soldier stepped into frame. Two large guns on each arm. The blast hit the shield and knocked the two men back. It deflected, hitting the metal wall and blowing a chunk out of it. Part of the metal bent back from the floor, torn so that it hung out over the mountain tracks. Steve had been blown into the wall on the right but Bucky had landed left near the destroyed wall. Basil made a whimpering noise as on screen, Bucky grabbed Steve's shield and stood up.
"Turn it off!" Steve growled.
Zola laughed. "Keep watching". Basil couldn't do anything but watch.
Bucky resided the shield, using it as cover as he began shooting. The hydra agent took a step back and shot again. The blast hit the shield and Bucky dropped it as he was blown back. He hit the bent wall and slid down, his figure small and hard to make out from the camera angle. Basil had his hands over his mouth as he watched Bucky dangle like a kite buffed by the winds. On screen, Steve had gotten up and grabbed his shield. He threw it, knocking the hydra soldier back through the door, before ripping off his helmet and running out. His arm reaching for Bucky. There was no sound. Basil could only watch as Steve tried to climb out, hand reaching. Then the railing Bucky was holding on to gave way and his form disappeared. The video cut off.
Basil blinked. He was shaking and there was tears in his eyes. "Did you enjoy that trip down memory lane?" Zola asked.
"You're a monster", Basil whispered, face pale.
Zola's laugh was weird and tinny through the speakers. He didn't sound human. "Cut off one head and two more shall take its place", he repeated.
"Prove if", Steve snapped. "Hydra died".
"Accessing archive". More images began appearing on the left screen. The red skull with the Nazi flag behind him. "Hydra was founded on the belief that humanity could no be trusted with its own freedom". Footage of World War Two, the howling commandos. Steve fighting. Basil throwing his knives. "The war taught us much. Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly. After the war, Shield was founded". Images of victory day. Pictures of the shield headquarters. Howard Stark, Peggy Carter and colonel Phillips. "And I was recruited. The new hydra grew. A beautiful parasite inside Shield". Photos of shield. Arnim Zola in the background. "For 70 years. Hydra has been secretly feeding crisis, reaping war. And when history would not cooperate, history was changed".
"That's impossible", Nat murmured. "Shield would have stopped you". Basil was feeling increasingly ill by the minute. He was shaking visibly. Cold sweat on his skin. He couldn't believe it. All they had sacrificed, was it really all for nothing? Had they affected hydra at all? (Sarge did we ever make a difference? Was all that effort, all that trauma, our deaths, our love. Did it all amount to nothing? We lost our lives for this cause, our youth, our families. We have given up absolutely everything and it's wasn't it enough. Why wasn't it enough? Why is it never enough? Maybe I should have just died there Sarge. Died when that bullet hit my chest. Or died on that metal table and spared you the pain. Oh god Sarge. I can't do this. I can't do this again). Basil could feel the tears welling up.
"Accidents will happen". News reports of Howard Stark's death flashed across the screen. Nick fury marked as deceased. "Hydra created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom. To gain its security. Once a purification process is complete, hydra's new world order will arise. We won captain. Your deaths amount to the same as your lives. A zero sum".
That was when Steve finally snapped. The screen cracked and splintered under his fist. Basil shuddered at the bang of the impact. Zola's face flickered to the smaller screen on the right. "As I was saying".
"What's on this drive!" Steve shouted.
"Project insight requires insight. So I wrote an algorithm".
"What kind of algorithm. What does it do?" Nat voiced.
"The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately you shall be too dead to hear it". Behind them the doors began whirring closed. Steve threw his shield but it was too late. It bounced off the doors and back into his arms. Nat flicked on her scanning device.
"Guys, we've got a bogey. Short range ballistic. 30 seconds tops".
"Who fired it?" Basil asked.
"Shield".
"I am afraid I have been stalling captain".
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" Basil screamed in panic. His breath was coming fast and tears dripping down his cheeks. Nat swiped the drive and pushed it into her pocket as Steve began looking around. He ran to the air vents in the floor and pulled up the metal grate. Beneath it was a hole, about as big as a grave. Big enough to hopefully shield them.
"Admit it. It's better this way. We are, both of us. Out of time".
"Basil!" Steve shouted as he grabbed Nat. Basil didn't move. He was frozen. Hands gripping the dog tags around his neck. Tears still dripping down his cheeks as he stared at the cracked and broken screen. The missile hit and Steve threw him and Natasha into the air vent, shield raised as everything burst in a cloud of fire and rubble. The whole building caving in around them.

An: Who cried? Basil and Steve can't seem to catch a break.
Also I messed with Steve's age to fit what ages I gave them in stasis.
