Chapter 24: Lost

Rushing out of the apartment complex, Jungkook turned behind to check if his cousin had followed him...luckily for him, she did not. This caused him to close his eyes and let out a sigh of relief, soaking in the silence of the late noon streets. It was about the time of the night were all workers and students rushed back from school and work to the shelter of home.

Since the official closure of V.I.R.T.U.E, the citizens around the world had no way of protecting themselves from the vial creatures of The Underworld. The government then implemented a curfew for all citizens around the world, locking them inside their houses if past ten at night.

Jungkook ignored side glances he received from pedestrians entering the apartment complex and walked forward. Not only did he look like he had just woken up but he looked like he hadn't gotten sleep for over a week. Dark eye bags dawned the bottom of his eyes and his chestnut hair stuck out in multiple different directions. In an attempt to clean up his appearance, Jungkook pulled his fingers through his hair and ruffled it. However, his attempts to tame his hair was deemed useless as he felt a small droplet of water fall into the tip of his nose.

The male scrunched his nose up in shock before pulling his black hood over his head. He shoved his hands into the pocket of his jumper and ignored the fastening pace of the rain. He didn't bother turning back around to find shelter in the complex he had just rushed out of as he needed a break.

He never once thought of the consequences of being out so late because he wasn't worried. He was an ex-demon slayer for 5th dimension's sake.

After V.I.R.T.U.E disbanded Jungkook was left in a lost state. It was not like he didn't have anywhere to go to. He had the option of going back home or to stay in the capital and begin his studies. It was definitely not an easy choice to make and in fact, he never thought he would ever need to think about it. As a child, Jungkook's dream had always been to train and join the ranks of V.I.R.T.U.E. He dedicated his entire life training for it and a backup plan completely skipped his mind in the process. So after seeing how distressed her cousin was, Minjin decided to offer him a temporary place to stay. Thus, for the past year, Jungkook had been residing at his cousins once clean apartment. Jungkook at the time thought it was a good idea but that was until Minjin became obsessed.

Every day, the doctor would return after work to the desk sitting in the living room. The desk Jungkook hated once sat in Minjin's room but it was soon moved into the living room. Minjin's room could no longer keep all the countless books and print outs she brought back home and she had no chose but to move it outside. So the desk sat in the room Jungkook often spent his time in, it never failed to remind him of his past and he hated it.

On top of the desk was a massive corkboard. The corkboard was filled to the brim with maps, photos of demons, operatives the list goes on. All of this information was connected with thumbtacks and red string.

Only two weeks after V.I.R.T.U.E's disbanding, Minjin began to throw theories of the weird coincidences of V.I.R.T.U.E's apparent disbandments. She would always urge him to reach out to the other operatives and help her search. She would often come home with new links and information in which Jungkook was quick to dismiss. He didn't want to hear it. He didn't need any more false hope.

It was funny...a lot of the other overseas operatives were over the moon when hearing that they could return back to their families. Most hopped on the first train or flight back but not Jungkook. He missed his family so much so why wasn't he with them now? He knew why but he hated to admit it because he felt guilty. Because of his lust to get into V.I.R.T.U.E, the countless nights away and training tore a rift in his relationship with his family. Maybe he was lonely to start with. His family was his family and he loved them to pieces but he never got to have the talk with his father...or fight with his elder brother about action figures. Those small but vital memories he missed out on was replaced with new memories at V.I.R.T.U.E. With no one to express his feelings to he turned his fellow - ex - Virtue wielders. Those six boys turned into people Jungkook learned to care more about then he intended. They raised him when he arrived in Seoul and the bond the seven of them shared was irreplaceable.

So every single time he walked into the living room he was immediately reminded of another family lost and this time he couldn't do anything to get them back. The thing that bonded them together was no more and even if he tried to contact them all V.I.R.T.U.E activity was forbidden.

He needed to get out of that place for a bit and clear his mind but that idea was soon kicked out the door when he spotted you. Appearing right in front of him like a gift from the Overworld was you. He knew Minjin would scold him if he came home telling her he spotted you in the streets. He could always not tell her but for some reason, he found his body moving on its own.

Following you out of the convenience store, Jungkook curiously and slyly followed behind you in silence. He didn't really know what he wanted to achieve by following you but for some reason, your appearance managed to ignite a sense of hope in him. Something he thought he had lost a long time ago. Although he now somewhat regretted following his instincts as the next thing he knew it he was thrown to the brick wall violently by none other than you.

A loud cough escaped his lungs when his back came in contact with the wall and it suddenly brought back memories of the fight one year ago.

"Who are you?" He hears you growl lowly.

It took a few seconds for Jungkook to shake himself out of a shocked state and soon after, he found himself speaking what seemed like a foreign sentence. "J'ai jurer allégeance à ceux qui prennent position contre l'obscurité." He couldn't remember the last time he said this but it came out as fluent as ever.

"How do you know that?" Taken back by Jungkook's sentence, Jungkook felt you lower the dagger slightly from his neck. But he still felt the need to reveal himself.

"Yo calm down." His voice rose in panic and so he quickly pulled off his hood. "It's me." Watching your face change to a soft one, Jungkook shot you an apologetic smile.

"Jungkook?" Slightly breathless from the fast movement previously, you immediately took a step back and let go of Jungkook's collar. Your breath was short and sporadic.

"Gosh if I knew you had a knife in your purse I would have asked Minjin to greet you instead." Rubbing the small scratch on his neck, Jungkook chuckled nervously.

"I'm sorry. What are you doing here?" Finally taking the time to catch your breath, you eyed the male from head to toe. He was dressed in all black with a hood covering the majority of his face, of course, you were going to attack him. His dark figure could have been easily mistaken as a demon.

"To get you."

"I didn't know we were on that level of friendship yet Jeon." You bluntly say before raising your left eyebrow in suspicion.

After processing what you had just implied, Jungkook quickly held his hands up and a large cross. Maybe he should have worded it differently. "Yo chill." He exclaimed once again. "Man Minjin would kill me." You hear him mutter under his breath.

"Minjin?" Taking the chance to change the subject, Jungkook shot up excitedly and snapped his fingers.

"Yes, Minjin!" He nearly screamed. "She has been looking for you."

"The Doc? What for?"

"She needs your help." Jungkook didn't know what had gotten into him in that moment. After a year of dismissing Minjins psychotic theories, Jungkook had gone completely against his own beliefs and asked for your help. But it didn't matter because it felt right and maybe...just maybe something in him believed what Minjin had been spouting was true.
