Chapter 23: Moving On
"Here is your order, a bunch of red roses?" Smiling up at the male standing in front of you, you gently lay the beautifully arranged bouquet onto the benchtop.
"That is correct." He shone you an equally bright smile before picking up the bouquet and admiring your workmate's handy work.
"That would be thirty thousand won." Seeing him scan his card on the top of the scanner, you turned to him with a thumbs up.
"Be careful tonight." You waved him off as he opened the door to the shop, a humid gust of air making its way in before it closed again.
Another ordinary summers day. A sigh escaped your lips as you slowly walked your way around the small corner florist you had managed to score a job at just over a year ago now. After the failure of the mission now over a year ago, countless protests sprung up all around the world. Citizens rebelling against the only thing which was providing them safety from the vile creatures of the 5th Dimension. You had to admit though, it didn't need much convincing because only a week later V.I.R.T.U.E was banned from operating in regions all around the world, leaving thousands of people jobless. The Seven Virtues' weapons taken away and locked from use. After all who would want their help if they couldn't even protect their own leader?
Most of the operatives gave up without much of a fight, including you.
Eyes landing on a bucket of purple lilies, you unconsciously screw your hands into fists.
If she was here she would have scolded you for giving up so easily. She would have hit you across the head for good measure afterwards and tried to manage running V.I.R.T.U.E as a one-man show. Your mother was a firm believer in V.I.R.T.U.E's morals.
Whatever, it was too late now.
And in a blink of an eye, a year has passed and most of the operatives had begun to move on. Even if you were to come back there wouldn't be anything left. Everything was locked away and out of anyone's reach in the old headquarters.
It was funny actually, from the little small flower shop you could see the V.I.R.T.U.E headquarters. It was like it was there as a reminder of what you didn't have anymore. You missed it so much. Having trained to get into the agency for half of your life and spending the other half working there it felt weird to wake up in the morning without needing to train. The last time you had picked up your rifle was over one year ago. It just didn't feel right and you hadn't felt like yourself since then. You had even let your signature long navy bob to grow out to be a long mane.
Tearing your gaze away from the tall building, you hear the back door open and in came your cue to leave.
"Hey (y/n)." Tying the small black apron around her waist, Soomi - your co-worker, took her stand at the cash register. "You can clock out if you want now, sorry I'm late. Had a hard time putting my siblings to sleep."
Shaking your head in response, you begin to untie the knot securing the apron around your waist. "No worries Soomi, its been quite today anyway." You then proceed to hang the item upon a hook behind the counter before slinging your bag onto your shoulder.
"Thanks (y/n), you're the best." Shooting her one final grin, you swiftly pick up a bunch of yellow carnations and exited the shop. You had planned on visiting Soohyun today and you didn't want to go empty-handed.
Seeing that it was still bright outside put your body at ease and you found your walk to the hospital quite pleasant. The small rays of the sun which seemed to be peaking out from behind the small breaks in the clouds seemed to lighten up your mood after seeing the old headquarters but it all soon when downhill when a certain caller ID popped up onto the screen of your phone.
"Hey Zel." Your voice came much more strained then you intended for. "I'm not going to the gym with you."
"How'd you know I was going to say that?" Zel immediately pipped back, surprise evident in her tone of voice.
You didn't bother replying and simply let out a deep and long sign. Without fail, Zel would contact you thrice a week and ask you to take your ass out of the florist and plant it down onto a bench to do lifts some weights at the gym. And without fail - for one year now - you rejected her.
"Don't you give me that attitude, you need to do something with your life other than just walking back and forth from the hospital then to the florist." She continued.
"Then how about you come over to mine and we watch a movie together?" You quickly fired back. Zel knew how sensitive this topic was for you and you were often easily agitated or sadden when the topic is brought up, especially if it involved training. It brought back too many memories you missed.
You had moved on.
"You know that's not what I meant. I want to see you holding that rifle again, it suits you so well." She whined.
"No." And with that, you hung up the phone and walking through the automatic sliding doors of the hospital. You were quick to replace the frown into a content smile made its way onto your lips when you were hit with the chilling air of the air conditioner. You thought you where being cooked alive outside in that humidity.
Taking a right, you recalled your path to Soohyun's room with ease. You probably came to visit him twice a week and your father even more than that. The path to his room now engrained into your memory. After taking the elevator to the fourth floor you peeked your head into room four-zero-seven.
You dad immediately perked up from his seat to greet you.
"I'm glad you got here safely." Engulfing you into a tight hug, your father kissed your temples lightly before breaking the embrace.
"Same goes to you." You say after placing your bag and bunch of flowers down onto the side table. "Have you been here long?"
"I arrived an hour ago."
Nodding your head in response, you turned to your father's tired figure. His eyes were droopy and accompanied by black circles. "Have you eaten?" You asked and once you didn't hear a reply from him you clicked your tongue in disappointment. "I'll pop down to the convenience store to get you something to eat." You didn't give him any time to protest as you were already out the door.
You had told him off multiple times to eat before visiting Soohyun but he never listened. He had a habit of forgetting to eat lunch at work and the coming straight here to spend time with Soohyun for a few hours. You knew your dad's little habits all too well.
Walking forwards, your hand hovered over the top of your bag warily. You eyes darting from left to right as you trudged along the footpath. The light which was previously lighting up your path to the hospital was no longer. Over the small time period you had spent inside the hospital allowed the sun to set and for the moon to rise. The dimly lit streetlights now guided your path to the convenience store. The temperature dropped but not enough for the summer wind to turn icy. The dark clouds covering the low yellow glow of the moon.
As a result of the termination of V.I.R.T.U.E, demonic creatures now roamed freely in the 3rd Dimension without needing to worry about consequences. This resulted in the rise of deaths, reported rapes and Cambion births. Something the government wasn't doing a very good job at keeping on the down low.
Now citizens who wandered the streets at night no longer could feel safe or protected. In fact, hardly anyone wandered the night streets anymore.
You let out a huff of relief when you turn the corner and enter the convenience store. Now safe inside, you walked towards the refrigerator aisle. There were countless numbers of pre-made dishes to choose from and you had quite a hard time decided on the best chose for your father. After standing there and weighing your choices you finally decided on a tray of noodles. With that decision out of the way, you were out of the store in a matter of minutes. The same unsettling sensation returning.
It seemed the dark clouds covering the moon was filled with rain as just after a few steps it began to drizzle, this only added to your hasty footsteps. You knew all too well from your night patrols that rain and darkness were the perfect conditions for demon attack. Only having a single feeble dagger hidden inside your purse to protect you, you wanted to get out of here as soon as possible.
The sound of the heel of your boot against the asphalt was quickly silenced as the rain picked up its pace. Soon, you could feel the droplets soaking through your thin bomber jacket. Picking up your pace into a slow jog, you turned the corner and saw the large courtyard of the hospital. But you didn't have time to internally celebrate as you felt an increase of spiritual energy surging from behind you. You didn't stop nor did you pick up your pace. If you showed any sign of faltering the person or creature following you would know you knew of their presence. Instead, you subtly reached into your bag and clutched onto the handle of your dagger.
Slowing your pace down, you allowed the distance between you and the figure to close and in one swift movement, you latched onto the collar of the figure and slammed them into the building. Dagger to the person's neck, you leaned in close to inspect the hooded figure. "Who are you?" You growled.
"J'ai jurer allégeance à ceux qui prennent position contre l'obscurité." He spoke fluently and without hesitation. The way the sentence flowed so fluently off their tongue confused you and it caused you to push the figure against the wall again.
"How do you know that?"
No one used that anymore. V.I.R.T.U.E was gone...no one was left.
"Yo calm down." Voice rising in panic, the figure in front of you quickly pulled off his hood and sent you an apologetic smile. "It's me."
.
Who do you think it is?
OMG it's been so long I am sooooo sorry. I've been so busy recently, I'm going overseas so I've been packing and training for a performance not to mention all my results and uni offers are coming out now too. I'm soooo sorry I haven't really found the time and will to write recently. I think I've lost a bit of my touch after not writing and studying for so long. After I come back from my holiday I promise I will try to get back into things.
