22) Teamwork Differences

The light slowly faded as our two costumed partners leaped through the city like it was their own playground. Peter watched in astonishment as Felicia gracefully scaled tall buildings with her wire cable and made incredibly nimble landings. He followed loosely, just in case she lost her grip or footing, but he never had to assist her in anything that she didn't ask for. If there was an exceptionally large gap between buildings, she would leap hard and extend her hand out, knowing the web-slinger would swing her over to the other side flawlessly. They took the occasional break for Felicia to catch her breath or for Peter to take stress off his arms. Nevertheless, the two made great time, arriving at the bridge just as the sky turned into a twilight hue.

Felicia stopped on a roof over-looking the road on the bridge. She lifted her right leg and planted her foot on the edge. She leaned over to observe the ground at the base of their building, which wasn't far from the base of the bridge. Peter landed next to her in his signature crouch, looking out onto the bridge and admiring the view. Cars and trucks crossed from both directions, the white and red lights glittering against the twinkling backdrop of the downtown area and its reflection on the East River.

Peter looked over to his blonde companion, his eyes squinted in anticipation for a plan. "So," he asked nervously, "how do you wanna play this?"

Felicia rose from looking down and rested her arms on her raised leg. She exhaled heavily before she spoke, presumably from all the energy she spent getting to where they are. "I'll draw him in," she panted, "and you'll strike from above."

"Ok, anything you'd like me to do specifically?"

"Just..., leave the talking to me, ok," she said starkly, "No offense, but you seem like you suck at interrogating."

Peter's head flung back in embarrassment. "Excuse me," he complained, "for the record, I've interrogated a few people."

"Yeah, and how'd they turn out for ya" she cheekily inquired.

Peter moaned, "Never mind," and the eyes on his mask closed some.

Soon enough, a pair of car lights flashed on the gravel road below them. From behind the lights, a large black van rolled up to a spot beneath the bridge. Another car was already parked in the area, and a man in a workman's jacket exited his car and rounded to the back of the van. He waited for a second before a tall man in a black jacket and beanie walked out from behind the van from its driver-side. Felicia pulled out a pair of binoculars to get a better look at the driver. They were a special kind that provided night and infrared vision, allowing the user to see things in the dark or heated images through walls. She looked through them for a good couple seconds and finally brought them away from her eyes.

"It's him," she nodded, "we'll wait til his buyer leaves before we go in."

"Alright," Peter replied, "I'm gonna move in closer. See if I can get anything out of their conversation."

"Just don't be too sneaky, Spider" Felicia warned him. Peter nodded and leaped to the other building next to the bridge. From there, he hopped onto the bridge and crawled along its brick surface. By the time he reached the arched underpass the two men were under, he kept his body hidden behind the side of the bridge while peeking his head halfway out to watch them.

"Activate reconnaissance drone" he quietly ordered, and his little spider drone on his chest went into action. It zoomed behind the buyer's car and slunk beneath the man's van as they bargained.

"You're sure this will get the job done?" the buyer intently questioned.

"Man, who you talkin' to?" the dealer fired back. "I guarantee whoever comes across you, better hope their guns fire faster, or my name isn't Turk Barrett" he said in a smooth persuasive way.

"Fine," the man said reluctantly, "I'll take your word for it." He took a couple of bills out of his back pocket and counted it before handing them to Turk, who smiled at the sight of the money.

"Ha, ha, ha," Turk chuckled, "that's what I'm talkin' bout." His buyer rolled his eyes at his display of satisfaction and turned back to his own vehicle. "Let me know if you need anything else" Turk called out to him. The man lifted his arm and gave a thumbs-up without turning back to him, showing that he had finished what he had come to do. As he opened his car door, Peter looked back to where he had left Felicia and saw that she was nowhere to be seen. His mind raced, thinking that it was all a setup and that she had abandoned him to do all the work. He looked around hoping to catch a glimpse of her, but the man's car engine roared into life and he was soon gone. Peter figured with Felicia gone, he might have to get answers out of Turk by himself. He called back his drone and prepared to hop down to surprise him.

Meanwhile, Turk had brought the bills up to nose to feel its scent. "Mmm," he grinned, "crisper than a happy meal."

"Sounds good" Felicia's voice rang out, causing Turk and Peter to quickly turn to where she was, "I could go for a happy meal."

"Well, well, well, Ms. Felicia," Turk smiled at the sight of her, "what can I do for you this evening." Peter found this exchange so surprising. How could they know each, he thought, and why would she disclose that information from him..

Felicia approached with a small smirk, "I need information, about some weapons that were sold to a bunch of boys in Queens."

"What," Turk asked, "you thinking about packing some heat?" and turned into his trunk to sort through his supply. Seizing the opportunity, Felicia looked to the costumed Peter and shot her eyes in the direction of the spot she wanted him to strike from. Acting quickly, he silently crawled along the underside of the bridge.

"I want to know where the weapons are, you got anything" Felicia answered Turk, to which he reacted with a pair of raised eyebrows and blunt 'hmpf'.

"I think I know which boys you're talking about," Turk explained, "but I don't know shit, and even if I did, someone would have slit my throat before you got a chance to ask."

"I figured you'd say that" Felicia smiled. And as if it was planned, Turk felt something attach to the back of his heal. The sudden feeling of it attaching startled him a bit, before it swiftly pulled his legs out from underneath him. Turk face-planted in the fall, and whatever he was attached to, continued to pull him up. When he finally felt the tension on the webbing loosen, he was hanging upside down from his heals, his vision limited to the underbelly of his van and the gravel road beneath it. The hit he had taken to the head in the fall made his vision blurry, making things seem not normal. Finally, his vision came around and saw a head with a red mask hanging upside down on the opposite end of his van.

"Ah c'mon man," Turk complained, "why can't folks like y'all leave me alone."

Peter didn't waist anytime getting to the point. "Those boys blew up a tech shop and nearly killed a dozen children in a daycare center. So please, play nice and you might still enjoy that happy meal."

"And if I don't you'll what?" Turk fired back. Felicia then jabbed something into his lower back. Turk twisted and turned and twitched about as he dangled from his web. Electric shock waves surged throughout his body from the output of her hand-held taser. She pulled it back and Turk squealed like a small pig, "Alright, alright, I might'a heard something. Bunch'a neighborhood boys all developing their own tech, supposed to deliver the goods sometime within the week."

"That's impossible," Peter exclaimed as he crawled along the underside of the van in a prowling way, "kids with little to none resources don't just make weapons like that."

"Maybe they got some help" Felicia butted in. She crouched down to meet Turk's face and displayed the end of her taser in front of him. "Where's the delivery spot?" she sternly demanded.

"I don't know girl," he confessed, "they tell me nothing bout that shit. I've given you everything I got."

"Turk, you've always been a little snitch," Felicia sighed, "but we'll let you be for now."

"We will??" said Peter.

"He'll stick his fingers into the jar at some point, and we'll be back when he does" she replied, shifting her eyes between her costumed ally and the cowering arms dealer. She stood and searched his person, snaking her hands into his pockets until she found his phone. "Guess this won't do much good for you while your dangling there" she teased before chucking it into the river. "Bye Turk-Jerk, pleasure doing business with you," she continued and started walking away from the scene. She picked up a few fifty-dollar bills scattered on the road and stashed it into her jacket.

Peter crawled out from under the van and observed her actions. He was so puzzled with everything she did and how unpredictable her actions were. He turned his head to a dangling Turk and whispered, "Hey man, how do you know her, and what do you know about her?"

Turk only groaned in annoyance, "All I know, is that she had a thing with one of the boys at the top. She'd always be part of their entourage or something."

"So, you're saying her emotions might be driving her pursue them?"

"Probably."

Peter sighed and leaped onto the roof of the van and cut the web that held Turk in the air. A blunt thud sounded against the gravel as he made impact. Turk landed on his back and Peter quickly webbed him up by his arms and legs. "Figured you'd be better off without all the blood rushing to your head," Peter cheekily said, "we can't all have spider powers." Turk chuckled as Peter swung away after Felicia.
