16) Aftermath

Peter fluttered his eyes as the sun glared upon his laid-out body. The pain in his ribs still throbbing throughout his torso. He found he was lying down in the back alley of the buildings that had caught fire. He sighed in relief knowing that he was safe, and that May wouldn't have to be so worried.

His vision was becoming clearer with every second, and he hoped that the figure that had pulled him out of the fire was standing next to him or above him. However, he did not see the figure, but instead saw two black uniformed gentlemen racing down the alley to his aid. Peter rolled over onto his knees gradually came to his feet. One of the officer's arms tucked under Peter's left arm to help.

"You alright Spider-Man?" his partner asked the beaten hero.

Peter moaned, feeling the bruises on his face as his flexed his facial features, "I think so." He took a couple of breathes, searching his surroundings for a glimpse of the mysterious figure that had helped him. But still, he found nothing.

He turned his attention back to the officers behind him, "Is everyone o.k.?" he asked.

The two gentlemen looked at each other for a moment, and Peter's heart sank. He knew it. He had missed someone, and it was entirely his fault. And there's nothing he can do to bring them back. Then the officer that helped him up gave him a warm smile and assured him that everyone was o.k. Peter was relieved to hear those words come out of the officer's mouth. "Look Spidey," the officer continued, "we can take care of it from here. Go enjoy the rest of your day."

Peter nodded and jumped onto the side of the building he was facing. Before climbing up, he turned back to the officers with a friendly salute. "Thank you officers," he said with earnest, "have a good one." Spider-Man turned back toward his wall and made his ascent.

He reached the edge of the roof and leapt across the alley to the opposing roof and walked to the center. He pulled out his phone to call his aunt to tell her that he was fine. It didn't take long before she answered.

May- Peter are you o.k? I heard the explosion and figured you would rush to the scene.

"Yeah, I'm o.k," he moaned as he braced his rib cage, "I just took a couple hard ones."

May- Is everyone else ok?

"For the most part, yeah."

May- The news station said the assholes that did it got away.

"Yep, that's what happened," he said in an annoyed voice. He walked toward the other side of the roof, where he could see the destruction done by the bomb.

May- Are you sure you're o.k.? You sound really hurt.

I DID A PHYSICAL ANALYSIS FOR YOU PETER, Karen's voice interrupted, IT APPEARS THAT THE PAIN IN YOUR RIB IS ONLY A SMALL FRACTURE, AND IS TREATABLE BY APPLYING PRESSURE, ICE, AND A FEW DAYS REST.

"Don't worry about it, my suit lady said its easily treatable. I'll be home soon ok."

May- Alright sweetie, I love you, be safe.

"I will, I love you too." With that, he put his phone into his back pocket and observed the people below him. Paramedics and police officers were setting perimeters and instructing others where to go. Firefighters were bravely entering the damaged buildings and putting out the remaining flames. He searched through the crowd, making sure everyone was alright and hoping nothing unusual stood out.

Near the street corner, he saw Robbie asking questions and taking notes from those that witnessed the explosion or anybody that had been inside when it went off. Peter then remembered Robbie's offer and how he missed the opportunity to tell May about it. It didn't bother him too much really, it would be much more rewarding to tell her in person anyway. The thought of the job was still fresh in his head, and he thought it would be a good idea to snap a couple pictures to send to Robbie. With his phone, he took a couple of pictures of the people, the smoke coming out of the building, and some of the police and paramedic activity.

While aiming the camera at a paramedic team, he saw Michelle comforting her father who was laid out on a gurnee. Peter could tell she had been crying, her eyes were fogged and there was a slight reflection bouncing of her cheek. Her dad had a heart-warming smile upon his face, probably to relieve the sadness in his daughter. The ambulance team approached them to take him to the hospital and Michelle dove into her father's arms for one last hug before he had to go. It was a picture-perfect moment, and Peter knew it. He lifted he camera, zoomed in, and caught the moment before Michelle could rise from her position.

He's a bigger hero than I am, he thought, and she's lucky to have someone like him watching out for her. Within seconds, Jones' gurnee was hoisted into the ambulance and it drove away from the scene.

I hope we can be good friends Michelle, were his final thoughts as he stuck his phone back where it came from as he prepared to swing back home, looking forward to some needed rest.

Down on the ground, Michelle was still standing where her father was amongst all the other casualties that were being treated. Nearby, the girl her father had saved was being treated by paramedics and the daycare leader. From behind, the girl's mother shouted in relief and ran up to her, wrapping her into a tight hug and crying. Michelle looked in their direction and smiled at the happy reunion.

"Are you o.k.?" the mother asked her daughter, checking around her for any abnormal features. The daughter responded by lifted her arm and pointed it in Michelle's direction, earning a confused look from Michelle. Then the girl spoke.

"That girl's dad came running in to save us."

The mother looked over at Michelle, who didn't want to draw any attention to herself. "Really" the mother said, putting her right hand over her daughter's cheek.

"Yes," the caregiver cut in, catching their attention, "he bravely came in to help me take the children outside." Michelle's felt warm, knowing that her father was a hero. It was kind of a weird thing to think about, let alone know that her father was a hero. "It was the bravest thing I've ever seen. You have a wonderful man as a father" the caregiver said, directing her focus to Michelle.

"I know" she said with shy confidence.

The mother stood and approached her. "Where is your dad now sweetie?" she asked. Michelle took a second to compose herself and told the mother everything she knew. From the injured leg, to the respiratory distress he went through from heavy smoke inhalation. In response, the mother walked forward to give her a hug. It took Michelle by surprise, but she eventually gave in. The two parted and the mother asked her, "Can you tell your father that we are thankful for him, and that we hope he gets well soon." A small smile grew over Michelle's face, and she nodded in agreement to her request.

"I'm just astonished that he was able to make it out with a heavy limp" the caregiver added from behind the two. The girl looked toward her and corrected her.

"Spider-Man came in too," earning an interested look from all three women, "the building started falling on top of us and he held it long enough for us to get out." The three women all looked at each other in disbelief, but knew the story was probably true, given the circumstances the daughter and her savior were in. The mother crouched down and hugged her daughter once more. Michelle kept her gaze on the two, being thankful that they could be with each other again, and that her father was safe as well.

All the peace of the moment was interrupted by a chorus of cheers and applause down the block from the crowd that had gathered. Thousands of hands were clapping and waving in the air as a slim figure flew above them. The girl quickly became excited at the sight of him and rose her arm to wave off the departing hero.

"Bye Spider-Man!" she cheered as he swung past. The mother and caregiver looked up in amazement at the web-slingers exit, thinking how luck this city is to have someone like him around to look after the little guys.

Behind them, Michelle looked up not in astonishment, but with interest. Her memory of seeing his leg out the gym window was still fresh in her mind, and it leading her to draw many conclusions based on other knowledge she had about the wall-crawler. She felt this sense of doubt, but with every piece of evidence that popped in her brain, the doubt molded into realization. And from that realization, she didn't feel proud that she had cracked some big mystery, but that she had a new understanding of things she had observed.

"Listen," she said to the group of women around her, "I appreciate the thanks you've given, but I think I should go."

"Sure, it's o.k." the caregiver said with a kind smile.

"Yeah, go be with your dad sweetie," the mother continued, "thank you again."

Michelle nodded and turned back toward the center. As she walked, she couldn't help but think of her discovery. "Spider-Man huh" she whispered to herself, and a small smirk formed on her lips. The thought of Peter came to her and how they planned on hanging out together. The thought lightened her spirits, and she couldn't wait to be with him again.

She was halfway to the center when she felt a pair of small arms wrap around her waist, followed by a small head resting on her lower back. The sudden action took her by surprise, and she turned around to see the little girl hugging her. Michelle smiled and kneeled to her level to hug her back. Michelle looked back to the mother and caregiver, who were telling their story to Robbie. The mother pointed Michelle out and Robbie took notice of the exchange between her and the girl in her arms. Inspired by the young girl's act of appreciation, he took out his camera and captured the moment just before the girl whispered into Michelle's ear.

"Spider-Man may have saved your dad, but your dad saved me. He's MY HERO."

Michelle closed her eyes and hugged her tighter, letting her words sink in. They parted, and Michelle answered, "He's my hero too," giving a smile to the girl. The girl smiled back and ran back to her waiting mother.

Michelle turned back to the center and thought,

...and while I may never admit it to him, my friend Spider-Boy is my hero too.

A/N-  Still making the deadline with minutes to spare, but I really needed to work out the kinks of this chapter. But still, I hope you guys enjoyed Chapter 16.

I wanted to have some kind of follow up to everything that happened in the last 3 chapters and I think this is the best way to approach it. Also, it sets up a whole new dynamic between Peter and Michelle's relationship, which will be fun to write.

QUICK SIDE-NOTE: Who else is seeing all the photos from Venice on the "Spider-Man: Far From Home" set. I'm starting to think that director Jon Watts and writers Chris McKenna/Erik Sommers have crafted a very interesting premise for our high school characters.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this one. Leave a vote if you did, and please don't hesitate to comment your thoughts on the story. Feedback is appreciated.

A planned update is in the works for next weekend, but I will let you know if there is any delay. Until next time, BYE!!!
