Shooting stars

"C'mon Liam you're no fun"

William laughed as he picked up his phone. Even though he couldn't hear it, he could perfectly imagine Sherlock's pout at the other end of the line (AN: is this even correct? I have no idea sorry). He brought the phone to his ear before opening his notebook. "I would Sherly, I really would, but Mr. Moran gave us a lot of homework and I still have to work for Miss Moneypenny's test".

"But the test is in more than a week, you still have plenty of time. And you're a genius in math these exercises should be done in no time."

William felt his cheeks redden at the compliment. True, he was top student in math, but that didn't mean he could stop doing his homework. "I still want to do them well," he replied softly. Sherlock whined silently, and William closed his eyes, picturing his boyfriend's cute puppy eyes. The thought of it alone made him smile.

"Please Liam, I'll let you recopy my exercises, they're probably all wrong but who cares? We haven't been on a date like this for ages!"

William could feel his resolve slowly melting. It is true that they haven't been on midnight dates for a long time. He looked at the night sky through the window; the night was clear and a million stars were shining brightly atop his head. Though his window, he could see the village of Durham, only a mile or so away.

He knew in one of the shining houses in front of him, Sherlock Holmes was also looking out of his bedroom-window; he could picture the boy's soft smile, his raven locks hanging loosely on his shoulders, his dark-blue irises in which the stars would be shining. He brought the phone back to his face "I know, I miss it too, but Albert nii-san is still in the living-room and I have no way of sneaking out without being seen."

Sherlock gave an exclamation of joy, and William heard rustling before Sherlock spoke again.

"Who do you think I am Liam? If you don't come to me, I'll be the one coming to you!"

Before William could even ask him what he meant by that, Sherlock ended the call. He had no idea what Sherlock had in mind, but he couldn't help but wonder what his plan was.

Ten minutes later, William heard a little noise coming from out of the window. He stood up from his wooden desk and opened the window, letting the warm May breeze in. At first he could see nothing; then a spike of raven hair popped in the light, and under it soon appeared the grinning face of Sherlock.

They made eye contact for a second, there was a silence that seemed to stretch for eternity, and then William started laughing. Sherlock joined and soon they were both shaking on the ground. After a minute, William finally regained control and, still brightly chuckling, asked "What the hell are you doing here?"

Sherlock took a few inspirations to steady his breathing before answering "I told you I'd be the one coming to you!" He tied a rope to the windowsill and took William's hand "Now that I have climbed the tower to deliver my prince, shall he follow me into the night?" William pecked his boyfriend's cheek before firmly closing his hands on the rope and beginning to descend to the floor.

The wind was brushing against his hair and his school uniform. He looked up at the window to see Sherlock still looking at him with a smile. "You are going to kill me one day you know that?" He said while his feet finally landed on the grass.

In a swift movement, Sherlock went down the rope too, and cupping William's cheeks with his hand, he planted a kiss on his lips. "Then let's make good use of the time we have left" he whispered in William's ear. The blonde-haired giggled as Sherlock took his hand and led him in the forest surrounding the Moriarty Manor.

As they walked under the trees, hundreds of fireflies took off from the trees and flew around them. William stared in awe at their magnificent dance in the night sky. After a few minutes of walking, they finally arrived at a little hill. They climbed up and sat down on the soft grass. "What are we doing here Sherly?" asked William. "Look at the sky" the raven-haired answered with a mysterious smile.

The blonde fixed his crimson gaze into the dark immensity of the night, and suddenly he saw it: a faint trace of silver across the sky, almost invisible. Then another, and another, getting brighter each time. Droplets of stars were rolling down the sky, leaving a long silvery line that soon vanished in the night, and for the first time, William felt his brain come to a halt.

He stopped thinking, barely even breathing, eyes widely looking at the beautiful dance performed by the stars in front of him. It was illogical, incomprehensible, everything William normally couldn't stand; but it was so beautiful and peaceful he felt tears blossoming in his eyes. Tiny droplets of water rolled down his cheeks, an echo to the cry of the sky itself.

Suddenly he felt a warm tingle on his cheek, and turned to see Sherlock looking at him with worry. "Liam, you okay?" The blonde wiped his eyes and smiled to erase the worry from his boyfriend's blue irises. "I'm alright, don't worry. This...This is just so beautiful." Sherlock smiled a sweet smile, the kind that William was the only one to witness. William leaned in, and gently rested his head on the raven's shoulder. For a moment, he allowed himself to forget, forget about school, about work, about his brothers, his parents. Forget about the future, let it vanish among the stars; let it drop with them from the night sky. It was just Sherlock, him and the stars. It has always been.

Ephemeral yet forever, they were shooting stars, dancing in the sky.
