The Truth
"Nate, what's wrong?" Lucas questioned as Nathan shut the living room door.
"Do you know how I told you I live with my parents when we first went out for dinner?" Nathan questioned, looking down at his feet.
"Yeah..." Lucas commented slowly.
"I-I lied. I'm not living with my parents; Mr. and Mrs. Wood are my old foster parents. They took me back in just before I met you," Nathan admitted, still refuting to meet Lucas's eyes.
"Wait... What? Why did you lie about that?" Lucas questioned, furrowing his eyebrows.
"I don't know! You asked about then looking after Dylan and I panicked. I really wanted to tell you, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I would have had to explain what's happened, and I barely knew you," Nathan admitted.
"I get that! But you still lied to me about it. Do you honestly think I would have though any less of you?! I wouldn't have made you explain yourself! I would never do that." A look of regret came on Lucas's face when he saw Nathan freeze and tears in his eyes.
"Shh... Don't cry, It's alright... I'm sorry for yelling," Lucas whispered as he rubbed Nathan's back.
Lucas kept whispering apologies until Nathan's sobs had been reduced to sniffles.
Resisting Lucas's attempts to get him out of his arms, Nathan just held on tighter, enjoying the warmth and comfort.
"I'm sorry for yelling at you," Lucas apologized again as Nathan wiped his eyes. "Are you okay now?" Lucas gently questioned.
"Yeah. I shouldn't have reacted like that. I'm sorry." Nathan pulled away and dropped his gaze to the floor.
"No, it wasn't your fault. I shouldn't have scared you. How about we put this behind us, yeah? Let's not let it ruin our anniversary, yeah?" Lucas questioned, smiling as he handed Nathan the flowers.
"Yeah. What's the plan? Are you introducing yourself and see Dylan or are we just leaving?" Nathan questioned as he ran a hand through his hair.
"Are you moving out soon? What's the point in introducing myself?" Lucas questioned.
"I'm going to be staying here for a little while longer at least. I haven't even started looking," Nathan admitted.
"I'll introduce myself. Now I know where you live, they'll be seeing a lot of me," Lucas promised as he opened the door.
Nathan laughed and led Lucas into the kitchen.
When they entered, everyone's attention was instantly on them. As Lucas introduced himself to Scarlett's parents, Nathan made him hold his flowers while Nathan filled a vase with water and placed them in. While he walked towards the sink Nathan didn't miss the knowing look Scarlett sent him from her seat at the breakfast bar.
"What was that look for?" Nathan questioned as he opened the fridge and grabbed two cans of coke.
"You like him. Don't lie Nathan, I know you do," Scarlett insisted.
"Whatever Scarlett," Nathan mumbled as we walked away.
"Here." Lucas smiled as Nathan handed him the open can.
"Not that I'm complaining, but I thought we were leaving soon?" Lucas questioned, giving Nathan a confused look.
"How long does it take you to drink a can of Coke? We're leaving in ten minutes weather you've drunk it or not." Nathan threatened.
"I'll drink it; don't worry," Lucas promised. "I take it Dylan's sleeping?"
"Yeah, he's been crawling around most of the day; It must have tired him out," Nathan explained.
Breaking his promise, Lucas spent fifteen minutes drinking his Coke. After finishing their drinks, the pair said goodbye and left.
"So how's work? Have you got that promotion yet?" Lucas questioned as he started driving.
"Nope. I don't even have a chance with my task. I mean, his work started off so good, I barely had anything to correct. Then he just rewinds his ending, and I don't even know what he's trying to say. I've emailed him and he isn't even responding and the deadline is in two days," Nathan ranted.
"Sounds rough. Apart from that, are you happy with working there?" Lucas questioned, looking at Nathan.
"I love it there. It's a lot better than my old job: my manager doesn't overwork me or expect me to do something he hasn't trained me for," Nathan explained.
"How do you find working with someone else? I didn't think you would like that."
"I don't really work with anyone. I have someone that checks my work and tells my manager how I've done. Traydon and I work at the same level, but we don't do it together. We'll give each other advise and check each other's work, but that's about it," Nathan said.
"Nate, who's you manger?" Lucas questioned with a serious look on his face when they stopped at the traffic lights.
"Mr Smith, I don't know his first name. What's wrong?" Nathan questioned, seeing the confusion on Lucas's face.
"What does he look like?"
"Brown hair, blue eyes, quite similar to yours exactly, he looks around mid forties," Nathan listed.
Pulling into the car park, Lucas parked the car and took his phone out.
"Does he look like this?" Lucas asked, showing Nathan a picture of the latter's boss.
"That's him," Nathan confirmed. "How do you know him?"
"I thought I'd heard the name 'Traydon' before," Lucas mumbled. "Nate, do you remember when I told you my dad was a writer?"
"Yeah..." Nathan dragged out the word and gave Lucas a confused look.
"He's also an editor." Lucas added, he watched as Nathan came to the realization.
"You're telling me, I work for your dad?" Nathan questioned with his eyes wide.
"Apparently," Lucas answered in disbelief. "What are the odds?" Lucas questioned, making Nathan laugh.
The pair sat in silence for a couple of minutes, both trying to comprehend what they had heard.
"Well... Are you ready?" Nathan questioned as he undid his seatbelt.
Lucas nodded and made sure he had everything before he undid his seatbelt and got out of the car.
"I take it you've been here before?" Nathan questioned as they were led to their table.
"A couple of times," Lucas admitted, smiling.
"Is there any fancy restaurant you haven't been to?" Nathan questioned, unable to tear his gaze away from Lucas's lips.
"There's some. Don't worry, I'll we'll go to them," Lucas promised, sending Nathan a wink that made him blush.
"I'll hold you to that," Nathan warned, sending Lucas a false glare, making the older teen laugh.
They continued to talk after their meal, only stopping when they were kicked out at closing.
"We've been out for four hours," Nathan said as Lucas drove him home.
"I know, It's crazy," Lucas agreed. "So, when are you getting your license?"
"I still have a couple more weeks before I can take my test, apparently," Nathan answered.
"It's not that long! It could be worse, you might not even be having lessons," Lucas reminded.
"I know, It's just annoying."
Lucas hummed in agreement as they fell into a comfortable silence for the rest of the ride.
