Meeting him

Nathan smiled as he sat on the stool in the Wood's kitchen; listening as Scarlett talked about random things as he chewed on his ham and cheese sandwich. Spending time with Scarlett at her place was something Nathan had done more and more since Scarlett had forced him to a month ago.

Nathan was only half paying attention to Scarlett's rant about her teacher messing up her grade; instead, he focused on the baby monitor beside him. Nathan still couldn't believe Dylan was five months old already, in his opinion, Dylan was growing far too fast.

"So, when are you starting your job?" Scarlett questioned, taking a sip of her coke.

"I haven't even been for the interview yet." Nathan shook his head and finished his sandwich.

"You'll get it..." Nathan's ring tone interrupted scarlett.

Picking up his phone, Nathan sighed, "I have to take this, sorry," Nathan apologised; standing up and walking into the hallway.

"Hello?" Nathan questioned after he accepted the call.

"Hi Mr Black, as you know you are behind on your rent again. I'll give you until Friday to pay or you'll be kicked out," Before Nathan could respond, his landlord hung up. After hearing his words, dread-filled Nathan's stomach.

Sighing, Nathan made his way into the living room. Smiling to himself when he saw Dylan sleeping. He knew Dylan didn't deserve to live the way he did; living in a one-bedroom apartment and about to be kicked out.

Seeing his son was fine, Nathan walked back into the kitchen. His mind filled with worries about his and Dylan's future.

"You okay?" Scarlett questioned, placing her phone down.

"Yea, it was just my coworker," Nathan lied, faking a smile.

"My parents are coming back soon; do you want to go out when they come back? I'm sure they'll be fine about babysitting."

"Erm... no thanks. I don't want to leave Dylan when I don't have to." Nathan silently groaned. He knew it was a terrible excuse.

"He can come with us like last time. I just thought you would want something to take your mind off everything that's happened."

"I just don't feel like going shopping."

"We don't have to... how about we just go out to eat; I'll pay," Scarlett suggested, smiling at Nathan, concern in her eyes.

"Alright then. On one condition, Dylan comes with us."

"Sure."

"I'll go get Dylan's stuff ready." Nathan picke4d up his and Scarlett's plates and put them in the sink as he passed, and headed upstairs. Dylan had two nurseries in the Wood's home, one upstairs attached to a guess room and one downstairs. The one attached to the guest room was built two weeks ago when Nathan and Dylan stayed over a lot. Ryan was happily allowing it, Nathan assumed he still felt bad for kicking him out when he was fifteen.

Nathan walked into Dylan's nursery and grabbed some bottles, planning to prepare some formula in case they were out longer than expected, and some dummies, nappies and placing them in his bag, before leaving; he planned on grabbing Dylan's bunny and blanket once he had woken up; which Nathan suspected would be in the next five or ten minutes.

"Who's this!" Scarlett gasped as Nathan walked in. Dylan began squealing and reaching for Nathan the second he walked in; causing Nathan to smile and pick Dylan up, rubbing his nose together with his child's.

"Has he been changed?" Nathan asked, as he already noticed the empty milk bottle.

"I was just about to do it. I have done though everything else."

Nathan just nodded as he walked into the living room and placed a towel on the floor, before changing his son.

After changing Dylan, Nathan spent the next forty minutes just playing with Dylan, placing his son above his course work that's due the next day.

Nathan continued walking, pushing Dylan's buggy as he walked; the baby had occupied himself with attempting to bite his bunnies' ear off. Considering it was below 3 degrees, Nathan was thankful that he had dressed Dylan in multiple layers.

Having taken a break from the cold and get a coffee, Nathan opened the door to Starbucks.

Even though Scarlett had offered to take Dylan with her shopping, Nathan refused, wanting to spend the limited time he had with his son.

"Hey, I'm sorry to bother you... but do you mind if I sit here there are no other seats?" Nathan looked over at the man who spoke, seeing they looked the same age.

"Sure, make yourself comfortable," Nathan said happily, gesturing to the seat opposite him.

"Stuck babysitting?" The teen questioned, his forest green eyes focus on Dylan.

"Nah, he's my son," Nathan admitted, smiling at the other teen.

"Your son... Sorry, you just look so young," the teen admitted breaking eye contact.

"I'm seventeen. Let's just say he wasn't planned. I'm Nathan and this little guy's Dylan."

"I'm Lucas," Lucas smiled, offering his hand to Nathan, who instantly shook it.

"So what do you do?" Lucas questioned, taking a sip of his coffee.

"I'm a waiter, not the best, but it pays decently and I'm at college taking a writing course. What about you?"

"I'm studying child care and A-level, maths, English and history. Don't have a job," Lucas admitted. Nathan saw the way his eyes lit up when he mentioned his course.

"Child care?" Nathan questioned, shooting Lucas a curious look.

"I'm hoping to become a teacher. Lame, I know." Lucas looked down again as he bit his lip.

"It's not lame. It means your smart; don't you need like top grades?"

"It depends on what you want to teach, really. If you want to teach primary school, you need top grades in English, maths and science. But if you want to teach secondary or abode, you only need one subject," Lucas explained, as he took another drink of his coffee.

"I couldn't be a teacher. I'd lose my patience too easily. It's a miracle I haven't lost my temper with this one," Nathan admitted. "How do you do it? Study four courses and have a social life? I struggle with one course."

"Yea, but you have to look after a child and work. I just fill my time with studying," Lucas reminded, as he offered Nathan a kind smile.

"I just don't have the patience. Don't you ever feel like you want to give up? I didn't mean it like that!" Nathan quickly added, not wanting to suggest anything.

"I know what you meant, don't worry," Lucas added calmly. "To answer your question, not really. There are days when I just can't be bothered. It just feels like school; I did a lot more revision than."

"Fair enough."

The pair fell into a comfortable silence; both lost in their thoughts.

"I can't believe how well behaved he is. I was expecting for him to be crying the whole time," Lucas admitted as he rubbed the back to his neck.

"If he's not sleeping, he's mainly attempting to murder his bunny or blanket unless he needs changing or something."

"Is that a real rabbit or?" Lucas questioned, unable to keep a straight face.

"Yes, of course it's a real rabbit." Lucas couldn't contain his laughter as Nathan rolled his eyes in fake annoyance.

"I've got to go..." Nathan spoke twenty minutes later than his phone alerted him to a text from Scarlett. "Call me." Nathan pushed a piece of paper towards the other teen.

"Do you just carry that around?" Lucas questioned as Nathan stood up.

"Of course; don't you? See you around." Nathan smirked walking out. His mind preoccupied with thoughts of Lucas.
