Interview

Nathan smiled to himself as he walked up the driveway. The aching in his legs made him regret declining Ryan's offer for a lift.

Unlocking the door and taking a step inside, he was met with Scarlett standing directly in front of him, biting her lip.

"How'd it go?" Scarlett questioned nervously.

"It went well," Nathan answered.

"So, you've got the job?" Scarlett asked hopefully.

"I've just had an interview, there's no guarantee I'll get it," Nathan explained. "Any way where's Dylan?"

"He's playing in the living room. He's just been fed and changed," Scarlett answered kindly.

"Thanks," Nathan responded, walking into the living room to play with his six-month-old son.

"Hey buddy," Nathan cooed; he smiled when Dylan started blabbering in response as he watched his dad from his playpen

"Guess what? Daddy might get a new job..." Nathan continued, watching him as Dylan continued to place his blocks in a line. "That means we can have an entire apartment to ourselves...." Nathan continued, placid Dylan on his lap when the boy reached his arms up.

Feeling Dylan's head hit against his shoulder, Nathan knew it was time for his nap. Placing the boy in his newly installed cot in the living room, Nathan placed Dylan's stuffed bunny beside him and made sure the boy was wrapped up. As his son closed his eyes, Nathan lent forward and placed a kiss on his forehead.

"I won't fail you again," Nathan promised before double-checking Dylan was going to be warm enough.

"How'd the interview go?" Ryan questioned the second Nathan entered the kitchen.

"It went well! Hopefully, we'll only be here for a couple more months before we'll be out of your way," Nathan said hopefully as he got a can of Coke from the fridge.

"How many times; you're both welcome here. I will not kick you out. I've already made that mistake." Ryan patted Nathan on the shoulder as he passed. "Don't worry about it, okay? You've completed the interview all you can do now is wait. When are you quitting your job?" Ryan questioned.

"I'm doing it on Wednesday. I can't deal with Tomas's empty promises anymore."

"Good! How about you relax for a while? We've got Dylan."

Nathan nodded and began walking towards his room when his phone vibrated. Taking it out of his jean's pocket, he smiled when he saw Lucas was calling him. Sliding his finger across the screen, Nathan placed the phone to his ear.

"Hi!" Nathan began, as he walked up the final two stares.

"Hey! How'd the interview go?"

Nathan explained the details of his interview.

"That sounds hopeful! I'm sure you'll get it," Lucas responded, confidence in his tone.

"Thanks. I wish I was that sure. So how's your life? Did you get the results for your test?" Nathan questioned, after flopping down on his bed.

"I passed, I got an A. My parents are annoyed though."

"What! You got an A and they're annoyed! What do they expect!?"

"An A* , I failed in their eyes," Lucas mumbled the final words, his sadness obvious.

"You didn't fail! Your parents are just being harsh! You passed, that's all that matters. Who cares what they say. I bet you did better than most in your class. Let them complain," Nathan dismissed.

"They're not that bad. Not normally, anyway. My dad just had a bad day; he was interviewing people. He said there were only two he was employing. He interviewed like twenty people. I don't know who they are, but they're lucky," Lucas commented.

"Why are they lucky?"

"Because they won't have to pay for university."

"Really? Does he know how much that'll cost?"

"It's expensive, but it clearly works. That's one reason why he's so picky."

"So he doesn't have to spend money on those he doesn't deem good enough?" Nathan questioned.

"Exactly!"

"I don't know how to feel about that, to be honest. I mean, is he not willing to let people learn?" Nathan questioned.

"Yea, but he's putting his name on the line, Nate. He can't have someone with no talent representing his name," Lucas calmly explained.

"Still, it just seems harsh to me," Nathan defended.

"He's a professional Nate! He will not let his name be destroyed by someone that doesn't know what they're doing."

"You seem to know a lot about this," Nathan said.

Lucas let out a low chuckle, "It's all my dad talked about when we were younger. He always told us we had to work hard to keep what we've done and not let it be taken away. I know he wants us to be successful."

"He sounds like a good parent," Nathan mumbled.

"Both of my parents are," Lucas informed.

"What I wouldn't give for that," Nathen whispered.

"What was that?"

"Oh, nothing," Nathan dismissed.

The pair continued to talk for hours. It wasn't until Nathan heard Ryan call him down for dinner, did he realise the time.

"As much as I love talking to you. I have to go, dinner's ready," Nathan announced standing up.

"Alright, see you soon. Talk to you tomorrow."

"Yea, see you later, goodnight."

"Goodnight," Lucas replied. Nathan swore he heard some sadness in his voice.

Dinner was filled with the normal conversations the family had, and Erin questioning Nathan about his interview.

After spending the rest of the night playing until it hit six when Nathan put his son to bed.

The rest of the night was spent with Nathan taking a forty-five-minute shower and watching a movie in his room before he decided to just go to sleep. Despite knowing it would mess his body clock up, Nathan fell asleep at ten pm.
