Thad created a simulation for a scenario where he was in charge of the team when they were forced against merciless threat.  But in the process he forgot it wasn't real, and lost his team one by one as they made progress. Watching them die  because of his plans, and finally succeeding after losing all of them to save the world. He tried again and again and kept losing them even when he partnered with others. . He felt hollow, he hated himself and missed them more than anything. 

When you unplugged him Thad broke down in tears as he described everything perfectly especially how you died. At the end he requested, begged for you to take him off the team.  He thought it was a risk no matter what role he played.
