The living ghost
I'm sure you all know this already, but in case you don't, the main character in a story doesn't have to be the hero.
:D
Tw: Violence, extreme angst, betrayal of friends.
~Amita~
The room was pitch black, and the door had been locked behind us. We had been trying to find some rebels, and had been told to come to this building. It was on the edge of a farming village on some planet that I hadn't bothered to remember the name of.
"Fan out!" Hunter ordered, holding his blaster steady.
I reluctantly nodded, silently walking down the halls. Wrecker walked by my left, exchanging a look with Crosshair.
"Amita," Crosshair whispered, "feel anything?"
I tilted my head, but I could only feel my squad mates' emotions.
"No one else is in the room," I whispered back.
"I could've told you that," Hunter grumbled.
I rolled my eyes, and continued squinting in the darkness. We slowly walked forward, keeping our weapons ready.
"Come out with your hands up!" Hunter commanded, even though we both knew no one was there.
I felt a burst of surprise come from my right.
I glanced to the side, expecting to see Tech, but no one was there.
"Tech?" I cautiously called out. "Where'd you go?"
A flash of shock to my right, before it flickered into nothingness.
I whipped my head around, and saw Wrecker was slumped on the ground, unconscious.
"Wrecker?" Crosshair nudged him with the toe of his shoe, to no response.
"We're surrounded," Hunter said, alarm shooting through him as he clearly sensed something.
"How many?" Crosshair urgently asked.
Hunter closed his eyes for a moment. "Three."
"I can feel the flurry of their emotions now," I nodded, confirming what he had said. "They must've been too far away."
I saw a glimpse of blonde hair out the window before a blue ray hit Crosshair's back, sending him sprawling to the ground.
"Amita, did you set us up?" Hunter furiously rounded on me.
"What? You destroyed my comm!" I angrily said. "How would I have done this?"
"You could've- Amita! Behind you!" Hunter's eyes widened as his gaze slid to something behind me.
A shot rang through the room, and my body went numb as a blue light engulfed me.
"Amita! Amita wake up!" A voice hissed, as someone shook me.
"Rex? Echo?" I said in surprise as I opened my eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"We went against Ahsoka's wishes and are rescuing you," Echo told me, giving me a bright smile. "But we need to hurry before they all wake up. We would've killed them but... we were told not to."
"Told by who?" I questioned, getting to my feet.
"No time," Rex shook his head. "We need to go."
"I- I can't," I squeezed my eyes shut. "I can't leave them like this."
"Amita, what are you saying?" Echo paled, the excitement fading from his smile.
"I- I don't understand it either, but Ahsoka made me realize that my enhancements are a curse," I bitterly said. "I've somehow... grown attached to them. Don't get me wrong, I hate them, but... I don't know how to explain it!"
"Amita, after everything we've been through?" Rex said in disbelief.
"I can change them!" I desperately said. "There must be a reason why I feel like I can't leave them! This must be it!"
Echo and Rex still looked doubtful, giving each other a look.
"She's right. They're good men."
I looked up at where the voice had come from, spotting a shadowed figure slowly gliding towards us.
"The chips are what changed them, but you shouldn't let yourself go against your morales, just to try and help them."
"That's not it! I can help them!" I frantically said, arguing with this stranger.
A woman with brown eyes and black hair stepped into the light, her gaze hard.
"Emilia?" My mouth gaped open. "I thought you died! I saw your corpse with my own eyes!"
"A simple body double," Emilia dismissively said.
"Why?" I demanded. "Why fake your own death?"
"Tarkin was on to me. He knew there was a rebel spy in the Imperial senate, and I couldn't let myself be caught by him," Emilia explained, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear.
"Make your choice," Rex said, turning his gaze to the floor. "Them, or us."
"I- I don't want to choose! I don't want to be part of the Empire, but I know I can help them!" Tears came to my eyes, misery and fury mixed. "Why can't you understand?"
"Traitor," Echo spat, resentment filling him.
The word hit me like a dagger, striking me in the chest.
"No!" I cried out. "No! I'm not! I swear! But I can't just leave them when I can help them get the chip out of their heads! If I had the chip, I'd want someone to help me!"
"But you don't," Rex quietly said. "But you don't have the chip, and you never will."
"Yes, and I'm grateful for that!" I choked out.
"You'll never understand what it's like to turn against your best friend. You'll never understand the rage, the pain, and the sorrow that comes with the chip," Rex softly said. "You'll never be one of us. I don't know why I tried to pretend you were."
"Rex, don't you think that's a bit harsh?" Emilia hesitantly said.
Rex bitterly laughed. "I wish you the best, Amita."
"Rex, please!" I yelled after him as he left. "Don't leave me!"
"Amita, have fun with those Imperial friends of yours," Echo scathingly said, before following after Rex.
"Good luck, Amita," Emilia kindly said, then jogged after them.
I sunk to my knees, tears falling from my face. My chest twisted as I grieved the lose of two of my only friendships.
Traitor.
"Amita?" Tech groggily said as he stumbled into the room. "What happened?"
"Rex and Echo came, and then they left after... after making me choose between them and you," I told him, digging my hands into the carpet. "I think I made a mistake."
Tech plopped down next to me, holding a hand to his head. "Why didn't you go with them?"
"I don't know," I truthfully said. "I want to help you with the chips, but they were some of my closest friends."
"Don't say that again," Tech sharply said.
"Excuse me?" I wiped the tears from my cheeks.
"The chips. I would advise you against mentioning the chips again. I understand you want to remove out chips, but that's illegal in the eyes of the Empire," Tech narrowed his eyes at me from behind his goggles. "I'd hate to see you go off to reconditioning again."
"Wait!" I gasped, a realization hitting me. "Where did you go when everyone was stunned?"
Tech bristled. "Are you accusing me of something?"
"You disappeared before everyone else was picked off one by one," I slowly said. "Where did you go?"
"I owe you no explanation," Tech said, pushing himself up.
"Tech, you either tell me where you went, or I'll let Hunter know you're hiding something," I threatened.
"No. You won't inform Hunter of anything of the sort," Tech calmly stated.
"Why not?" I crossed my arms.
A small smile grew on Tech's face. "I've been in contact with Lily. She's looking for you."
I stood rooted in place, fear trickling down my spine.
"And if you talk with Hunter, I'll let Lily know where you are," Tech finished. "She's been very eager to find you."
"I won't tell Hunter that you mysteriously vanished, but you can't tell Lily where I am," I held my hand out.
"Deal," Tech agreed, and shook my hand.
Lily.
My fiancé.
