The Bad Batch

I'm trying something new and will be writing this from first person, but if it's bad let me know.

Tw: Sexual innuendos, violence, gore, self-doubt, language

We're starting off strong eh?

I don't know how it always ends up like this, I just write and put the warnings after.

~Amita~

I grinned at Rex as we ran, noticing how his forehead wrinkled when he scowled at me. I turned my head to look at Echo on my other side also glaring at me.

"What's wrong?" I innocently asked, huffing heavily.

They didn't reply, too busy trying to beat me, even though they'd never been able to so far. I had motivation and drive. They also did, but I knew that if they beat me, I'd suffer.

"Ha!" I cheered. "I win!"

"How do you do that?" Echo grumbled as he stood behind me in line for the food stand.

"Training," I grinned, stretching a bit to ease the soreness for tomorrow.

"I was an ARC trooper!" Echo pouted. "I should be able to keep up!"

Rex rolled his eyes and put more weight on one leg. "I was a captain and I couldn't keep up. Stop complaining Echo."

"I'm not complaining!" Echo argued. "I'm just trying to figure out how she does it! She gets first pick of the food every day because she beats us here!"

"Sounds like complaining to me," I patted his head. "Relax Echo, I'll tell you how I do it if it's really bothering you that much."

Echo nodded. "Yes please."

"When you two run, you're so used to having blasters in your hands that you make fists when you run. I hold my flat, pointing the direction I'm running," I curled my fingers and straightened them to demonstrate. "It's called being aerodynamic."

"I'll beat you tomorrow," Echo confidently said.

"'ere ya go," Po'tor said as she handed me a basket of mufins. "Enjoy eh?"

"Thank you Po'tor," I respectfully said. "I'm sure I'll love it."

I sat down on a bench nearby and waited for Echo and Rex to get their food. I rummaged through the basket and found my favourite: Chocolate. I grabbed it to eat first.

Echo and Rex plopped down next to me and they ate their servings as well, chatting about how much Echo had snored last night. My comm beeped and I wiped my hands on my pants to check it.

"It's Saw," I frowned. "Should I answer?"

"Probably," Rex's lips thinned. "It might be important."

"Hello. This is Mercy," I used my code name to be safe, as there could be enemy ears around Saw's location.

"Greetings Mercy. This is Bubbles, who still hates his code name," Came Saw's voice.

"Amita chose it," Echo chimed in.

"Shut up Echo," I flicked his nose. "What's up Saw?"

"I know it's your vacation, but we got a distress call from our base on Endor," Saw sighed. "You're the closest to it."

I looked to Rex, the unofficial leader, who nodded. "We'll do it."

"Great!" Saw happily said. "We don't know who sent it, but they sent it to our secure network. They must be a rebel."

"We'll head out by the end of the rotation," Rex said. "We have to get our equipment from our lodgings fist."

Saw ended the connection, and I tucked my comm back into my boot. We stood up from the bench and walked to the inn we had been staying in together. As we walked, I quickly checked their emotions, noting Echo was feeling a bit unsure. I mulled over how to approach him.

"Echo?" I softly said. "What's wrong?"

"Huh?" Echo looked at me in confusion.

"You're unsure and confused,"I prompted.

"It always unnerves me when you do that," Echo shuddered.

I curled inwards a bit, self-conscious about my abilities. Echo noticed my movements and put a hand on my arm.

"Hey, I didn't mean it like that," Echo assured me. "It just surprises me alright? I always forget about your enhancement."

"Okay," I murmured.

Rex decided to end the awkwardness. "Echo, what's bothering you?"

Echo gave him a grateful look. "Doesn't this seem a bit odd? An unknown person asking for help on the rebels secure channel? Shouldn't they know everyone who knows about the channel?"

"There's a lot of people who know about it in case of an emergency," I reasoned. "It could be a civilian, not a rebel."

"I guess," Echo hesitantly agreed.

"And it came from our base," I continued, "it's a secure place."

"Don't worry Echo," Rex placed his hand on Echo's shoulder. "It'll be fine."

"If it's not though, I'll be alone. My squad is gone," Echo looked at the ground.

I gave him a warm smile and raised his chin to look at me. "You won't be alone. Wolfe is out there too. So's Gregor. And you're a smart guy. You could figure something out."

"Not that anything's gonna happen. We're trained soldiers that can handle ourselves," Rex firmly said.

I squeezed Echo's hand before grabbing a bag from a drawer. I quickly packed some of my things and strapped my blaster to my waist. I helped the others with theirs as well and was about to go change when Rex announced it was time to go.

"But I need to change into mission gear," I protested.

"You'll be fine. We're just checking a distress signal," Rex held the door open.

"Alright," I sighed and went under his arm that was propping the door open.

When we got to the ship, I asked to fly, but Rex said no, accusing me of crashing the ship last time I did.

"But that totally wasn't my fault!" I argued. "Some guy shot me down!"

"You should've dodged!" Rex exclaimed. "If I wanted to be shot down I would've put it on autopilot!"

"Fine," I grunted and slouched in my seat.

Rex sat in the pilot's seat with Echo next to him. I cleaned my blaster as we went through hyperspace, wanting it just in case something happened.

When we landed on Endor, I saw Echo take a deep breath of the clean air with amusement. He always did like forest planets.

"Nice air?" I teased.

"We were on that busy city filled planet for too long," Echo defended himself.

Rex pushed us along to the location the signal came from. "Will you two stop arguing for once?"

"Yes dad," I joked.

"I always thought of Rex as the mom of the group," Echo thoughtfully said.

"Really?" I raised my eyebrows. "Wait, who am I in the group?"

"The annoying little sister," Echo cheekily said.

"Anyway," Rex focused our attention again, "just another klick until we reached the base."

We walked in silence until we saw a blast door in the side of a rocky slope. There was a bit of debris around the door as well.

"We're here," Rex declared.

"Thanks captain obvious," I muttered.

Rex shot me a glare, but I had already gotten close to the door with a confused expression on my face.

"What's wrong Amita?" Echo asked.

"If this is a base... shouldn't there be people inside?" I tilted my head at the door.

"Yeah," Rex nodded. "Why?"

"I'm not getting a lot of people's emotions from inside which is strange," I frowned and kicked a pebble. "Unless the base is small so there's only a few people in there."

"One way to find out," Rex said and hit the button, opening the door.

A cold draft hit us, the smell of blood hitting my nose. We exchanged worried looks before taking out our blasters and creeping inside.

The door shut behind us.

"I can't open it," Echo said after hitting the button a few times. "It's not working."

"Maybe there's a control panel somewhere up ahead," I suggested.

Rex looked doubtful. "Maybe..."

We crept through the corridors, the lights flickering above us. Dark hallway after hallway of nothingness, just doors with empty rooms.

"I don't like this," I whispered.

"Just be on guard," Rex said.

I nodded and continued following him, checking each room we passed for anyone who could've sent the signal. I never saw anyone though, and it was such a big base, I would've thought there would be someone there.

"Guys?" Echo fearfully said, drawing out attention. "I found something."

We turned around and saw him kneeling in a corner. I hurried to his side and saw a blood smear on the wall.

"What in the name of the force..." Rex whispered.

I shook my head, anxiety filling me. "I really don't like this."

"Maybe someone spilled sauce here?" Echo hopefully asked.

I could feel the fear radiating off him in waves.

"Let's keep moving," Rex decided and helped Echo up.

I gave the red spot another nervous look before catching up with them. Rex was in front of me with Echo in the back. So when Rex suddenly came to a stop, I bumped into him

"What is it?" I looked up at the back of his head.

"What the kriff?" Rex stepped to the side so I could see.

Bodies lay on the ground, piled in the corner. I could feel the queasiness that they felt, not only because of my enhancement, but because that's what I felt too.

"Let's get out of here and report this to Saw," Rex ordered and turned around to go back where we came from.

"Agreed," I said, and Echo nodded.

Then the lights went out completely.

I tried turning my glowrod on, but it wasn't working for some reason.

"Echo? Rex?" I  called. "My glowrod isn't working."

"Amita?" Rex called out. "Ours aren't working either. Echo's holding my arm, we're coming to get you."

"Okay," I then felt a hand gab hold of my arm.

"Ssh," was whispered in my ear.

I followed orders and let myself be pulled along left and right through the hallways. I wondered why they wanted me to be quiet, but I knew better than to say something when they told me not too.

Eventually a door opened in front of us and I was tugged inside. I blinked to adjust to the sudden change in lighting that this room had while the grip on my arm disappeared.

"What were those bodies doing there earlier..." I trailed off when I realized I was not talking to Echo and Rex.

Four men stood in front of me, their sinister grins frightening me. One of them had long hair and eyes that were watching my every move. Another one had silver hair and a lean form. The third had goggles and a pretty bad haircut. The last one was bald and had a fogy eye.

"Who the kriff are you?" I exclaimed and reached for my blaster, only to have it knocked from my hands by the long haired one.

They didn't answer, instead they shot me with a stun blast and I fell over, instantly going put cold.

I'm really liking this story. There's just something about writing a villain.

And I know the chip doesn't suddenly turn you to the dark side, but they became loyal to the empire, which is evil.
