the next time i saw her, there was still no smile.
instead, her lips were compressed together in a straight line.
her eyes were lifeless as she stared at the front, watching the teacher write down notes.
my fingers twitched on my desk, eager to go and comfort her and see if she was okay.
but she didn't know me.
why would she let a stranger talk to her?
"olivia," the teacher said, looking directly at the girl.
was that her name?
"where's last days homework?"
olivia slumped her shoulders and looked down at her lap, her eyes burning holes into her legs.
"uh i couldn't get it done," she whispered in a soft voice, her voice slowly being consumed by the sound of the classroom.
"see me after class," the teacher said, shaking his head in disappointment.
olivia let out a shaky breath and dug her thumbnail into the palm of her hand.
a piece of paper got chucked at olivia, hitting her square in the back of her head.
curiously, she picked it up and unwrapped the paper.
her eyes then filled up with water as she crumpled the paper and picked up her stuff, walking straight out of the classroom.
i watched her leave, sorrow opening it's arms to me.
my hand shakily reached to pick up the paper and my face contorted at what it said.
girls giggled behind me, snorting like pigs.
you're worthless.
