A Good Heart - Part 4
(Y/n) along with Miss Mary and a number of the other residents and store owners of the street, were out making sure that everything was in place for the days festivities; they had all organised a street party in hopes of bringing some camaraderie and community spirit back to the dull, dark, dirty streets of Gotham, and even if it was only their street that did such things, one street was better than no street.
(Y/n) had managed to organise with Hoyt that Arthur, Gary and the others would all be down to advertise for her store in conjunction with the party, knowing that the local children would love to have the "monsters" walking around as their parents talked, and hopefully made their way into her little business.
"Well, it looks like we're all done, I just have to wait for my monsters to arrive." (Y/n) told Miss Mary, as she helped the old lady bring out the last of the chair from her restaurant and placed them around the large communal table that had been set up.
"And will your lovely Arthur be here?" Miss Mary enquired, smiling softly as she saw (Y/n)'s cheeks turn a deep pink hue at the suggestion that Arthur was hers.
"Of course he's coming, I can't have monsters without having my very own Count Dracula, and I can't think of anyone better to play him than Arthur." (Y/n) said, looking up as she saw the small bus stop at the barriers at the end of the street.
"It looks like they're here." (Y/n) yelled out excitedly as she ran down the road, unable to contain her childlike excitement at the thought of seeing all her favourite horror characters brought to life in front of her.
Almost skidding to a halt, (Y/n) couldn't help but feel a giddy glee as the door of the bus opened and out lumbered an annoyed looking Randall, his painted grey skin, squared off head and neck bolts making him look every inch like Mary Shelly's famous monster, and though she had to admit she didn't like Randall, she suddenly found herself hugging the big man.
"Oh my god! You look wonderful!" (Y/n) exclaimed as she let go of a slightly happier looking Randall, her eyes widening when they fell on Gary, the little man dressed handsomely in a Victorian gentleman's suit with a top hat, half of his costume in perfect condition that would befit Dr. Jekyll, the other half tattered and torn, his face painted hideously, and his fingernails long, depicting the poor doctors alter ego of Mister Hyde.
"Gary, you look amazing, so gentlemanly, yet so scary." (Y/n) chuckled, as Gary took her hand and kissed her knuckles gently.
"It is a pleasure to be a gentleman for a lady such as yourself." Gary cooed softy, winking as he took her over to where her invisible man and Dorian Grey stood checking their costumes in one of the store windows.
"Well, I don't think that I could have asked for better, you all look wonderful." (Y/n) said, as she looked at the four men.
"Just one thing....... I'm missing a Count Dracula. Where's Arthur?" (Y/n) asked Gary, furrowing her brows as the little man began to chuckle.
"(Y/n)." A soft voice said from behind her, causing (Y/n) to spin on her heels, stopping as she came face to face with a sight that she had not quite been prepared for.
She had instructed Hoyt that no expense was to be spared with the boy's costumes, and that particular attention should be paid to her Count Dracula's; but as she looked at Arthur, he was more than she could have hoped for, and she couldn't help but feel weak at the knees.
Stood before her was not the clown she had first met, nor even the man that she cared for, in front of her stood her very own Count, handsome, mysterious and intriguing.
Arthur was dressed in an smart black three piece suit, that looked as though it had been especially tailored just for him, a crisp white shirt that had been left open around the neck, and just to add the icing to the cake, his shoulders were draped by a great black cape, which had a bright red lining that made his ensemble and his pale handsome face stand out all the more.
(Y/n) was sure she had forgotten how to breath, her mouth and eyes opening wide as she took every inch of the man in; it was true that she thought Arthur was handsome anyway, but in this new guise, he seemed to have taken on a new persona as well as the new costume, and as Arthur stood up straight and spun around letting his cloak fly out around him, (Y/n) was sure that if he was a real vampire she would be more than happy to offer him her neck to feast on.
"What do you think, (Y/n)?" Arthur asked, smiling as (Y/n) walked up to him and pushed back a few of his slick hairs that had fallen down as he spun.
"I er......... you er, I ........ oh Arthur, you look amazing." (Y/n) told him, with a huge grin as Arthur looked at her, a sense of pride overtaking his usual shyness.
"So....... do I make a good Count Dracula?" Arthur asked, as he took (Y/n)'s hands in his, both of them seeming to forget about the other monsters were behind them.
"You are every inch the handsome, mysterious, charming, and urbane vampire that I could have ever hoped for Arthur; not even the great Bela Lugosi, or Christopher Lee looked as good as you do in that costume." (Y/n) told him, sighing as she looked deep into his beautiful green eyes, which she could swear were casting some kind of spell over her.
"As much as I hate to interrupt you two love birds, we were wondering what you wanted us to do next?" Gary asked from behind the pair, smiling awkwardly as (Y/n) turned to look at them.
"Oh. I........ sorry, yes of course, you boys need to know what to do. Well, we are actually having a street party and lots of families and people from the local community are coming, and basically I just want you guys to do what you do best, entertain people, keep the kids happy, and hopefully persuade some of the adults to come into my shop, and with any luck I will get to sell some books." (Y/n) told the five men that were more used to wearing clown costumes than these smart outfits, but there was one thing they all knew, and that was how to entertain a crowd.
Taking Arthur's arm, (Y/n) led him and the others over to where the main festivities were just beginning, the assembled children squealing with delight as they saw the hulking Frankenstein lumbering his way towards them, the impish Jekyll and Hyde creeping around the large monster, and the dark and mysterious vampire striding proudly by (Y/n)'s side.
>>------------------------------<<
The day had gone wonderfully, the street had been alive with people all coming together to eat good food, and make good conversation, and now as (Y/n) sat quietly next to Miss Mary, she couldn't believe how wonderful all the boys from Ha-Ha's had been. They had spent all day entertaining the great mass of children that had grown up around them, Arthur and Gary making the biggest impact when the two had begun to dance to an old song that Miss Mary had played called "Monster Mash", the two not so scary monsters getting all the children to join in.
"He's a good boy, and so handsome too." Miss Mary said, looking at (Y/n) as she watched Arthur wave goodbye to a little girl that seemed to have been following him around all day.
"Don't you think its about time you told that child how you feel, honey? I mean it's obvious even to a blind man that you're in love with him." Miss Mary said, smiling as a shocked (Y/n) turned to look at her.
"I......I'm not....... well yes I am, but....." (Y/n) began, before Miss Mary quieted her.
"You two make the sweetest couple, and I haven't seen you as happy as when Arthur is with you, and the good lord only knows that boy needs someone to look after him; so go tell him that you love him before someone else comes along that can see what a good man he is." Miss Mary told (Y/n), smiling at the younger woman by her side as she turned to look back at Arthur.
"But what if he doesn't feel the same? I don't to lose him, I don't want to lose what we already have." (Y/n) said, concern evident in her voice as Miss Mary placed her hand on (Y/n)'s and squeezed it tightly.
"That boy is in love with you honey, I'm sure he's been in love with you since the first day he laid eyes on you. So, trust an old lady when I say that there is no way that child is gonna say no." Miss Mary told her, almost pushing (Y/n) up from her seat and over to where Arthur was talking to Gary.
"Er......Arthur, could I have a word a moment?" (Y/n) coughed, getting the attention of the two men.
"Of course, you can have a word with the good Count. Jekyll and I will be on the bus, I have a feeling that we won't be having to wait around for old Vlad here." Gary chuckled, shaking his head as he walked away knowing that neither (Y/n) nor Arthur had heard a single word he had said.
"I er........... I sold the copy of Dracula, and someone is interested in Frankenstein." (Y/n) nervously informed Arthur, trying to think of anything to delay the moment that she would confess her feelings for him.
"Oh, that's good." Arthur replied, himself not knowing how to broach the subject that he and Gary had just been discussing.
Arthur had had plenty of time to think about what Gary had said the day that (Y/n) had come into Ha-Ha's, that her kiss was more than a simple peck on the cheek, that she wanted something more than just friendship, and now as she stood in front of him, the pair looking into one another's eyes, he knew what he had to do.
"I love you!" Both (Y/n) and Arthur declared in unison, the two looking at one another in disbelief.
"What did you say?" They asked one another, both of them laughing as the pair moved closer, (Y/n) taking his hands in hers.
"I said that I love you Arthur." (Y/n) confessed.
"I know it sounds crazy, but I think I've loved you since I first dragged you into my shop that day, and you came down from your shower." (Y/n) admitted, blushing wildly as she averted her gaze to look at the ground, feeling uncharacteristically shy.
"I love you too." Arthur happily declared, for once not letting all his doubt's and fears get in the way.
"Well then, Count. What do you say about us writing a story of our own, one that will last for all time?" (Y/n) asked, sighing contentedly as Arthur pulled her into his arms.
"I think that sounds wonderful; and I think that the first sentence should be this." Arthur said, taking a deep breath as he leaned down and kissed (Y/n).
Miss Mary smiled as she looked over at the clown and the bookworm, reaching into her big bag and pulling out her knitting needles and two big balls of wool, one pink and one blue, sure in the knowledge that she would sooner or later need one, if not both of them.
