Chapter Sixteen

"Are you and Emily really not together again yet?" The twins' friend Gabriel said. "C'mon guys, you've made up, it's been a whole school year, just get back together."

It was June again, and everyone was out of school. The school year had been weird, with the twins attending Gotham Academy instead of Gotham North with most of their friends.

"We still haven't decided if we will or not. Be patient, guys," Emily said.

"Hey, A and A, you going to GA again this year?" Micheal asked.

"Yep," Artemis sighed.

"Can't let such a good opportunity go to waste. Mom wants what's best for us, and this is definitely the best way available to get into an Ivy League college." Apollo said, sounding slightly ticked off. He'd been in a bad mood all day. Apollo had wanted to go to Stanford, Brown, or Dartmouth for years. And Artemis wanted to go to Stanford. Given the fact that they were smart enough to earn scholarships to Gotham Academy, they would be in strong consideration at those schools if the applied. He was thrilled with the opportunity. Unlike his twin sister. He was usually enthusiastic about the subject.

"But you don't want to?" Josh asked.

"Exactly," Artemis said.

"Well, your friends from there are pretty cool," Daisy said.

"You mean Apollo's friends."

"You made friends."

"Three. I made three. In a year."

"Well, that's better than usual," Dakota Rose said.

"True," Artemis replied with a sigh.

"Off depressing topic," Jake said. "Onto a different one. Now that Em and Polly still haven't started dating again, it's time to start forcing Apollo and Josh together."

Both boys in question groaned and buried their heads in their arm. Artemis' gray eyes sparkled with mischief. "Oh, why do you fight it? You were positively made for each other," She said in a dramatic voice.

Everyone laughed except for Apollo and Josh. Josh flipped them off.

"C'mon, you know we're only joking," Artemis said.

"We do," Apollo said, sounding mad. "But you know that we hate you guys saying that. Arty, how do you feel when Megan, Zee, etc. joke about you and Wally. Same thing."

"I'm sorry," Artemis said quietly.

"You should be." Her brother got up and walked away.

Artemis got up and followed him, easily catching up. "Apollo!"

"Go away, Artemis."

"I'm really sorry, Apollo! I really am! I don't understand why you're so mad! Does this have to do with me and Jade messing around with your stuff earlier? Cuz we didn't take anything!"

"Why won't you just leave me alone, Artemis?!" He snapped, sounding angrier than she'd heard him in almost a year. And then he was mad at their dad for leaving, not at her. "I just wanna be alone, ok?!"

Artemis stepped back, hurt. "I-"

"Go away! Just freaking go away! I hate you! You never know when to leave me alone! I always know when to leave you alone, why can't you do the same for me?! Stupid!"

Artemis turned around and ran. She no longer wanted to hang out with her friends. She just wanted to... to lock herself in her room and put her razor or pocket knife to use.

"Artemis, are you-" Paula called after her daughter when Artemis got back to their apartment. Artemis slammed her bedroom door.

She immediately went into her bathroom, no longer holding back the tears. She grabbed her razor. Just when everything was fine, when she was getting better, it all went to hades again. She should've known. It had happened before, of course it would happen again. She dragged the razor down her arms, over and over again, until her wrists and forearms were a bleeding, bloody mess. She didn't patch herself up immediately, she let herself suffer. She had managed to get Apollo completely furious at her; she hadn't done that in years. She deserved the pain.

Andy walked in unannounced. "Arty," He dropped to his knees and started to clean her up. When he was done, he picked Artemis up and carried her to her bed. He sat down, still holding her. "What happened?"

"Apollo got mad at me. Really mad. He told me that I was stupid and that-" Her breath caught and she started sobbing. "That he- that he-" She took a deep breath. "That he hated me."

"What did you say that that ba***** said?!" Andy yelled.

"Apollo isn't-"

"He said that to you! I know that he was just in a bad mood, but he really upset you. That's not ok!"

Paula wheeled in, having heard a commotion. "What's going on?"

Andy explained, and Paula looked angry, but she decided to be more concerned about her daughter, who looked like she was about to have a anxiety attack. "It's ok, Baby Girl. It's ok, I promise. Deep breaths."

Artemis tried to, but was failing. Andy pulled something up on his phone. "Ok, Arty. Breathe in when the circle gets bigger, hold your breath when it stays the same size, and breathe out when the circle gets smaller, k?"

Artemis nodded and Andy handed her his phone. The circle got bigger and there was a number countdown in the middle of the circle. Breathe in, four, three, two, one. Hold it, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Breathe out, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. She kept going until she calmed down all the way.

"Feel better?" Paula asked. Artemis nodded. "Good."

There was a gentle knock on the door and an embarrassed Apollo came in. "I'm really sorry, Arty." He said quietly. "I was mad, and I wasn't thinking, and I said things that I regret. I'm really sorry."

"You better be," Andy growled. He gently took hold of one of Artemis' wrists, turning her bandaged arm so her twin could see it.

Apollo's eyes widened when he saw the bandages. "Oh, Arty." Tears filled his currently blue eyes. "I'm so sorry." He walked up to her and gently caressed the side of her face. He gently took her from Andy, who was still glaring at him. "Can you guys leave, please. I'm going to make her feel better, I swear."

"You'd better." Andy said dangerously, and he and Paula left the room.

Apollo held his sister close. "Hey, Art. I'm so sorry. I really, really, really am." He was crying now. "I wasn't paying attention or thinking through what I was saying, and I was in an extremely bad mood, and I said things, that I felt like were true at the time, it was really my anger talking, not really me. I know that you understand what I'm saying; you do the same thing all of the time. Can you please forgive?"

Artemis thought about it for a minute. "Of course I can. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't."

"I love you, Arty."

"Love you too, Polly."
