Please read (not art but about events of today *serious*)
So, today at school we had a code yellow (teachers lock the doors but continue teaching as normal) during 3rd block. I was in the middle of writing a DBQ (document based question) when this happened. My twin sister, however was in the cafeteria at the time. We thought it was just a drill, our teachers and principal had informed us that we'd be doing code yellow, code red (complete lock down, hide and stay quiet, there is a danger on campus), and fire drills every month since the school shooting down in Florida. We continued on with the test, thinking it was either a danger not in the school. They held lunch, which was weird so that was a big red flag that pointed to that it was not a drill and something was going on.
They finally came on and said we were clear and 3rd lunch could go to lunch. We had no idea what happened, since we were all taking our unit test in AP Euro, of course we wouldn't really think about anything else. I went to my last block, visual arts. There I learned a boy had brought a gun into campus... he was in the cafeteria at the time, but luckily they were able to dismantle the gun and arrest the student. The scary part was that if no one had said anything about that kid bringing a gun, my sister would be out in the open since there is no place to really hide in the cafeteria. You guys might not understand it, but twins have a connection no other sibling has. If I had lost her, I don't know What'd I do really.
When we reach our second bus (we have a bus take us to the middle school and we transfer to the bus that'll take us home) a boy on the bus knew the details of why the kid had brought the gun. The head of the football team was 'talking trash about him' but the boy on my bus knows him and thinks he was just bragging most likely. The guy who brought the gun got fed up and was gonna shoot the football captain. He talked about it over group message too. Two boys informed our principal and they were able to apprehend him with in minutes and take the /loaded/ gun away. He was arrested soon after.
This is why you should really tell adults about threats, guys. They saved a life here. It's not tattling if its to save lives and for protection. Don't go framing people though, you must have evidence. I know it's human nature to push things to the side and not make it your problem, everyone is guilty of it. They act like the issue is not in front of them. But, if you see threats, please address them and take them seriously, it's life or death at that point. Also, whom ever is thinking of participating in that walk out in March for the Florida shooting issue, I encourage you NOT to do it for your own safety. It is ample chance for a shooter to take action at that point, there will be people gathered around in one area, defenseless really. People will take advantage of that and probably shoot people, that's why most school shooters pull the fire alarm, to catch people by surprise when they least expect it. I know it's been said enough but safety is the biggest priority here.
Talk to an adult or trusted individual if you are depressed, feeling off or feeling the urge to do something that you wouldn't normally do. There has been too many mass shooting since January, around 30 and March just started. Please don't shrug things off or think it don't happen to you, because it might and you need to not take things for granted.
At my school, we've had so many threats, from shootings to stabbings. It's getting out of hand and people are not feeling safe there at all. The Friday before break there was a stabbing and shooting threat, some people did not come to school because they were scared. Last semester we had a shooting threat and barely anyone came to school, we have over 5 thousand kids at that school and the hallways were almost deserted besides the few that came, like my sister and I.
I'm putting this out there because this is a serious issue we are dealing with and it's sad that people even do these things, it's horrible. Just be smart and report anything you see and stay safe. It's sad that people don't take action till someone dies, take action before a death occurs please?
Thanks for reading till the end if you did, I just was really shaken by today and wanted to let this out in full.
