About Katarina Garmadon

About the character

Katarina Garmadon is immortal, and a bisexual, non-binary character, whose pronouns are she/they. She wears a chest binder on her days off, (she started wearing it after Hands of Time) and she eventually let the others know about it before the events of Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu (Zane was the first to find out, and he wanted to make sure she knew the risks when it came to wearing one), and eventually got top surgery shortly after Prime Empire. She never dated anyone before Benthomaar, although she had a few boy crushes here and there, some of them being girls, but she never seemed to really like any of her crushes. (She's the kind of person who would give her anyone dating advice, even though she never had any dating experience.)

Like Garmadon and Lloyd, she is really stubborn which was on multiple occassions. The Ninja sometimes comment she is like Lloyd sometimes. She is really observant, has a great sense of humour (and is prone to laugh at things that are even remotely funny), can be really serious when necessary (and when she's serious, she sometimes can't take people's bullshit), strategic, wise, and very determined and courageous.

Up until after the events of the Ice Chapter, she hadn't learned how to relax to save her life until the Ninja decided she had to or she was accidentally going to pull her daggers out on them (again). When she started to learn how to relax and have fun, she developed a love for music and listened to it whenever she could. She also likes drawing a lot, after Cole gave her a sketchbook to help her express her emotions. (She now has a collection of sketchbooks since then.)

Katarina's emotions can be really explosive, which causes her eyes to glow purple (a result of when Mage had taken her form). Examples of this are when she argued with Wu after the events of Possession, and the argument she had with Misako almost became worse when Misako told her about her trust issues towards Katarina in Ghost Story. She yelled at Garmadon when she and the Ninja thought they lost Cole to the darkness, and almost let her emotions get the best of her in the Storm Amulet when Kalmaar, Gripe and a Maraary Guard ambushed them back on the Island of the Keepers.

Katarina's weapons are silver twin daggers, with her elemental symbol etched onto them. In Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu, she etched her nickname onto her daggers about the symbol. The daggers were a gift from Garmadon before he went to train with Chen, and she summons them with her magic whenever she trains or during a fight. She was so used to summoning them now, she sometimes forgets not to. (One example being during sparring, and Wu said no weapons during a sparring match, and she instintively summoned them in the middle of her sparring match.)

Katarina uses her magic often, and can use combat magic against her opponents. She can use her magic when she isn't fighting, like teleporting, levitating stuff, etc. The only downside about her magic is that she can't use it when she is severely hurt, and if she attempts to do so, her magic will go haywire or barely work at all. But her magic can help heal her wounds faster.

Because she is an Elemental Master of Form, she doesn't use her Elemental Powers as often as she used to anymore, but she still uses them.

Facts

- Katarina doesn't like anything really sweet. After she left the Monastery for 40 years, she tried it once, but she didn't like it since it left a bad feeling in her throat. That's when she learned that she loves anything sour, especially sour candy.

*This is a similarity to Nya in Wishmasters, when Nya rejects Nadakhan's sweet treats and says she doesn't have much of a sweet tooth.

- Being the oldest Ninja amongst her teammates, she has the most experience out of all of them.

- When Katarina states to Garmadon in Unexpected Reunion she found something she liked doing 30 years after she left the Monastery, she doesn't state what it was. However, she says it didn't turn out well.

*She could've possibly been stating that she found a hobby that she fell out of, or a possible relationship with someone that turned out to be psychologically abusive. Whether or not that would be explored, it is left to the audience's interpretation.

- In the Tournament of Elements, Katarina was able to make friends with the Turner, Neuro and the Ninja easily. This is the case for the alternate timeline, where she has become fast friends with the crew of Misfortune's Keep.

- A scrapped concept of Katarina was her original sexuality, which was her being aroace.

- After the Hands of Time, the reason Katarina started binding her chest was not because she hated how her chest looked, but because it reminded her of her past prior to the series. She doesn't state this reason to Lloyd or the others in Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu, as it would raise too many questions.

Origins(?)

Katarina was cursed with immortality along with her sisters Dawn and Artemis. Unbeknownst to her, Dawn was the one who cursed herself and Artemis with immortality because Dawn wanted to live forever, but when she was granted immortality, Artemis and Katarina were granted immortality, too. Artemis got upset by this, and told their youngest sister she was going to be immortal, but didn't say Dawn was the one who "granted" her immortality. Katarina was really upset by this, because she didn't want to live forever. Dawn didn't help, saying she should be grateful she was going to live for all eternity, but that only ended up making Katarina's situation worse.

So, Katarina was given a pendant that kept her from turning in an inner demon or said inner demon from forming, because those who had immortality had inner demons (Being that were the complete opposite of the immortal). She wore that pendant for three years, until she unintentionally hurt one of Artemis, because she saw a spell that could remove immortality, but it failed and it almost killed Artemis. So Katarina ran away from her home and abandoned her pendant in her room. That was when she came upon Wu and Garmadon (You'll know the rest in the Prologue)

Her inner demon, Mage

Mage is the result - or consquence - of Katarina's immortality. Mage is a inner demon that is triggered by Katarina's emotions - Katarina's eyes glow purple when she is really pissed off or upset - and lives in the subconsciouness of her mind. After Mage took form in Katarina's mind, Katarina had to work hard in fighting her and keeping her at bay starting in March of the Oni until Seabound.

Mage has a sadistic personality, and is the type of person who doesn't really take anyone's bullshit. She can see into other people's heads, which is how she knows her opponents and what she's up against. This also lets her see their memories, which she can use to her advantage.

Mage's abilities are being able to use magic, but doesn't inherit Katarina's Elemental Power of Form. Her weapon is a scythe, which she can turn into a double-bladed scythe with her magic.

In Seabound, Mage promised to help Katarina escape Merlopia when Kalmaar seriously injured her, teleporting the purple ninja to the submarine to allow the ninja to take care of her. In Crystalized, Katarina brought herself to trust Mage and let her gain partial control of her body until the Overlord and his Crystal Army were defeated.

Relationships

Katarina and the Ninja have a great relationship with each other, treating each other like family. Kai, Jay and Cole were unsure if they could trust her back in the Tournament of Elements, but when she helped them out in their endeavors to find Zane and stop Chen for good, they realized she was a good friend after all. Zane and Pixal were confused about her and when she showed up, but they were accepting of her when Lloyd explained her to them, and the Ninja accepted her into their team.

Kai and Katarina are very good friends with each other. Kai can relate to her, because he knew little about his parents, while Katarina never knew her bio parents at all. They calm each other down when the other lets their emotions get the best of them. Katarina likes to say that Kai reminds her too much of his father - which was true due to Kai and Ray's similar personalities. She doesn't like it when Kai gets too cocky. They like to tease each other about their crushes - Katarina's on Benthomaar and Kai's on Skylor.

Nya and Katarina met each other shortly after the Great Devourer's attack on Ninjago City. Katarina appreciates Nya's profiency at mechanics, while Nya is amazed at Katarina's battle experience. They treat each other like sisters, talking about anything really and having their own girl time on their days off. Katarina once assured Nya that she didn't have to live up to the image or title that people put on her, because Katarina can relate to her.

Zane and Katarina see each other as great friends and people who care about the team. He was the first person to find out she was binding her chest, and told her what needed to be done before she got her top surgery. They both love talking about books and history - Katarina tells him what events she lived through before the Ninja came along, while Zane talks to her about his favorite books (She has her favorite books too). He takes care of her when she gets hurt, because he doesn't quite believe it when she says she can do it herself.

Jay and Katarina appreciate each other's company, and their sense of humor. Katarina doesn't quite like it when Jay freaks out over little things, because she thinks he over-exaggerates the situation a little too much. She also doesn't like his 'great acting' skills and his inabilty to lie when he's put in a tough spot. She once teased him about that show he once hosted, which he got a little embarassed about, but was glad she liked it. He shows her funny videos on his phone whenever she's done, which makes her laugh, while she makes him laugh with her jokes.

Cole and Katarina are great friends. Cole was the one who introduced her to drawing, saying it is his favorite hobby, and even bought her a sketchbook to get her into it. He encouraged Misako to talk to Katarina about her trust issues, and encouraged Katarina to talk to Wu because he hates it when his teammates don't get along.

Lloyd and Katarina are a brother-and-sister duo. Lloyd was skeptical of her at first, but soon grew to love her like a brother. The two are protectice of each other, with Lloyd being the most protective after Hunted. They talked to each other - like the weight on their shoulders for instance - and were always there for the other. They let their emotions get the best of them when they were extremely pissed off, and feel like they were responsible for their team when one of their teammates got hurt or worse.

Katarina promised her father Garmadon that she'll look after Lloyd with her life, and would get to know him better. Lloyd and Katarina care deeply about each other - Katarina worried to death when Morro possessed Lloyd and became protective of him, and Lloyd being scared when his sister got possessed by her inner demon Mage, which sparked his overprotectiveness over Katarina. Both siblings like candy, Katarina liking sour candy while Lloyd likes mint candy.

Benthomaar and Katarina met each other when she and her teammates where escaping Merlopia. After Katarina stayed behind and showed up back at the submarine, Benthomaar felt responsible for letting her get hurt. They fought alongside each other against the Maaray guards, and she helped him convince the Maaray guards Kalmaar was corrupted. She told him it wasn't his fault Kalmaar was able to summon Wojira, that she and Jay got hurt, and her home was under attack, because she knew it wasn't his intentions to let all that happen.

After Nya's memorial, Katarina took Benthomaar to the aquarium as a way to get their minds off of everything, which resulted in them talking about it at the end of the day. He thanked her for her offer to help him when things got tough in Merlopia. Once she heard word that Nya was out there in the Endless Sea, she wanted to come with him, but he refused, not wanting her to get hurt again.

When he came back in Crystalized with the Merlopians and the Keepers, Katarina was surprised and happy that he came back to help her and the Ninja. When she was using Mage to help everyone in Ninjago with the Crystal Army, he was almost heartbroken because he overheard her and Wu talking about the possibilty of her never coming back. They fought alongside each other when they were against the Crystal Army. When she came back, he was relieved and overjoyed that she was able to come back, and hugged her tight. He finally gathered the courage to ask her out, which she happily accepted, officially dating at the end of Crystalized.

Katarina and Wu have a stable relationship with each other. Wu was the reason Katarina ran away from the Monastery forty years prior to Tournament of Elements, calling her a monster and a mistake. Katarina distanced herself from Wu, and hated the fact that he kept secrets from her and the team, which sparked an argument here and there. She hated that Wu didn't even care about her when she left the Monastery, even though Wu claimed he did. But both student and master managed to heal their relationship, and it is shown Wu still deeply cares about her wellbeing.

Katarina and Misako's relationship is stable, and almost like a mother-daughter relationship. (Keyword: Almost). When Katarina first met her adoptive mother, she saw a caring side in Misako, believing that Misako cares about her and Lloyd. However, that didn't seem to be the case, as Katarina soon learned about Misako abandoning Lloyd at a boarding school, and called her out about it once. Misako also developed trust issues toward Katarina - due to Wu - and believed Katarina would hurt her friends on purpose. But later on, Katarina and Misako's relationship would be healed and Katarina is comfortable enough to show affection toward Misako. But she hates that Misako leaves the Monastery for long periods of time, further proving her point that Misako puts her history and research over Katarina and Lloyd, and breaking her heart.

Katarina and Garmadon had an incredible father-and-daughter bond. When Katarina came into Garmadon's life, he saw there was more to her than an apathetic girl who was being shaped into a warrior. He taught her how to be more empathetic and taught her there was more to life than surviving - And told her to make some friends for fuck's sake. He was the one who gave her her twin daggers, which she cherished and took great care of.

She was deeply heartbroken when he came back as Lord Garmadon, and extremely pissed off that he almost killed Lloyd. Katarina distanced herself from Lord Garmadon, and almost exploded from rage that he cared about some stupid golden armor instead of Cole.

She couldn't bring herself to trust him anymore later on in Crystalized, and believed that he wanted to use Mage to get what he wanted - Which proved not to be the case. Lord Garmadon advised Katarina that if she wanted to trust herself and be at peace with herself, she needed to trust and be at peace with her inner demon, which she soon took to heart. She also decided that she needed to trust her father once again, reforging her relationship with him.
