Sunlight glinted on the stones scattered throughout the woodland. The branches of oaks clogged the sky, their green leaves shifting in the gentle breeze.
But instead of the usual peace, the forest was nothing but tense. A patrol of broad-shouldered, sleek-pelted cats moved swiftly through the undergrowth. Their paws hit the ground silently, as the group went on. They were like a shadow; quick and quiet, leaving no evidence of their presence.
The patrol halted just beyond a line of bushes. There was a few tail-lengths of overgrown grass before the land dropped into a small shore, water lapping on the pebbles. A lake went on for many tree-lengths beyond, and the light from the sun danced on its surface. A few fox-lengths down the shore was a wooden bridge hanging over the lake, cut-off halfway.
The cats waited for a few moments, a tortoiseshell she-cat standing in front of them. There was only the faint chattering of birds and the quiet whistling of the breeze, and then another group stepped from the bushes across from them.
"Maplestripe." The leader of this patrol, a white-furred tom, met the she-cat's eyes.
"Snowtail." Maplestripe replied. Her tail twitched back-and-forth as the two groups of cats stood across from each other, tension-filled silence coming across them as though the hold world was holding its breath.
"Strange, how you've brought so many of your warriors," Snowtail glanced behind Maplestripe, surveying the cats behind her. "Considering we all know the obvious solution to our recent bickering."
Maplestripe allowed him to go on, holding her tongue.
"You give us the land beside the Halfbridge, and we get out of your fur." Snowtail raised his voice so every warrior could here. Shocked whispering spread through the ThunderClan cats on Maplestripe's side.
"Snowtail," Maplestripe narrowed her eyes and bared her teeth, "This land belongs to ThunderClan. If you want it, you will have to fight every one of us." She unsheathed her claws, and her warriors did the same.
"Very well." Snowtail hissed back, then unsheathed his claws. With a flick of his ear, the ShadowClan cats barreled forward, and met the ThunderClan warriors head-on. Torn fur swirled like dust in the air as cats thrashed together, wailing and hissing.
Maplestripe and Snowtail charged along with their warriors, meeting in a dance of tooth and claw. They clawed and bit at one another, each desperately trying to gain the upper hand.
At one point Maplestripe broke away, and she had merely glanced at the fight surrounding her when Snowtail rammed into her side with his head, sending both rolling down the bank onto the lakeshore.
Maplestripe spat as sandy pebbles got in her mouth. She kicked and hissed as Snowtail stood above her, baring his teeth fiercely.
Finally, the white tom jumped off. He scampered up the bank, sending one final glare at Maplestripe before hopping over the slope back into the main battle. Maplestripe shook herself then chased after him.
"ThunderClan! Retreat!" She screeched as she leaped over the slope. Her claws met the grass and she stood her ground, blood dripping from a wound above her eye. She didn't want her Clan to appear weak, but they couldn't win this battle. Even if it meant surrendering part of their land, her duty was to protect her Clanmates, not their pride.
"Retreat! Retreat!" She yowled again, hoping it wouldn't be drown out by the calls of battle. But the cats began to break away from each other, the ThunderClan warriors spitting and sending glares at their enemies before fleeing back into the woods.
Maplestripe stood on the edge of the slope, watching her cats go before turning her eyes to the ShadowClan warriors. Snowtail met her gaze with a sneer on his face.
"ShadowClan, let's go. We have won this battle and this land." He mewed calmly, before turning and leading his cats away.
Maplestripe stood alone on the battlefield for a few minutes, before departing into the shadowy oak forest.
